Dear Garden Friends,

I am finally back in Florida and the swing of things. Much was accomplished at the Board Meeting, and then the General Meeting was amazing! The hostess committee, led by Gail Edgren, went above and beyond and there were plenty of tasty treats for the large crowd - 48 members were present along with 25 guests. DROUGHT TOLERANT AND NATIVE FLORIDA PLANTS:

With the dry season almost upon us, we need all the help we can get to look after our plants and perhaps get some additional ones. Laurel Schiller, co-owner of Florida Native Plants Nursery in Sarasota, will present plants that tolerate our dry season and also those that are native to Florida. ~ Carol Houston, First Vice President

Christmas is Love and Happiness Holiday Luncheon

President’s Message, continued from page 1 The next several weeks will be very busy as we prepare for Home Tour on Dec. 1st and 2nd. Try to attend as many of your workshops as possible as this is the big fundraiser for our student scholarships and the many donations we make in our community. We want our homes to be gorgeous and wow the public! We have such talented members in charge of the homes this year. Our poinsettia supplier lost their entire supply of poinsettias in the hurricane but we are working to get them from another source. Hopefully all of that will work out as many persons plan to get their Holiday Flowers from us. We do not want to let them down. As I write this it is very hot outside but it is supposed to cool down soon. That should make gardening a little easier! The photos show two Calladiums I planted along the walk to my condo. They are great for a splash of color! See you at our next meeting.

NOVEMBER 2017 GARDEN TALES

Did You Know…

Coffee grounds can be useful in your garden. They are loaded with phosphorous, potassium, magnesium, and copper and the carbon to nitrogen ratio can be 11:1, which is an ideal ratio for plant and soil nutrition. The used grounds can be used for side dressing around fruiting vegetables like tomatoes and squash, and also around blueberries and fruit trees. Spread them generously over the beds of acid loving plants such as azaleas, rhododendrons, and hydrangeas for amazing blooms! Give seedlings a nitrogen boost by stirring grounds into soil or a watering can. There is evidence that coffee grounds deter the growth of fungus and various wilts that effect vegetable plants, and slugs and snails avoid creeping over them so the grounds are a pest-deterrent as well. Coffee grounds can be added to compost, tilled into the ground, or spread over the surface of a garden. What a great way to naturally fertilize! Mary Yeomans, Environmental Chair

Our condolences to Monica Lucey and her family. Monica recently

lost her daughter-in-law who was awaiting a kidney transplant and

leaves two teenagers behind. Keep them all in your prayers.

With water restrictions common throughout communities in Florida, many home gardeners are looking for super drought-tolerant plants that are also good-looking. Consider these for your yard:

Native saw palmetto is perfect for the Florida-friendly yard, as it can survive through the driest of times. This palm can range from 3 to 15 feet in height and will thrive in sun or shade.

The acacia is a small or medium-sized evergreen tree with feathery foliage and yellow, showy flowers.

The Jerusalem thorn tree has airy foliage and a low, spreading form. It boasts a profusion of small, yellow blooms that have a slight fragrance.

Rosemary is a drought-tolerant herb that gives the landscape a Mediterranean feel as well as a delicious scent. Many ornamental grasses are drought tolerant as well. ~ Paula Jenkins, Horticulture Chair

Native to desert areas in Mexico and the Southwestern US,

Jerusalem thorn tree looks delicate, but is very drought-tolerant.

Delicious Cookies Needed for

Holly Days Home Tour!

Hello Ladies, it’s that time of year again! This year the Holly Days Refreshment Committee is

requesting 5 dozen cookies per member. We will be accepting the cookies on Thursday, Nov. 30th between 9:00 and 4:00 in FUMC kitchen. Please,

no store bought cookies, and try recipes other than chocolate chips. Your cookies can be of different types, so if you are baking for the

holidays bake an extra dozen or so to include in your donation tray. Please bring a copy of your cookie recipe(s) to be compiled for next year’s event. Cookies may be placed on a dollar store

tray with plastic wrap and a half slice of bread to keep moist cookies moist. And they don’t have to be cookies! Fudge, brownies, or no-bake, just to name a few, are also options. Drag out that old

recipe box and see what your grandmother baked that made you happy!

Flowers are beautiful to look at, but did you know they make a wonderful addition to a natural beauty routine? They contain many chemical properties that are beneficial for hair and skin. You might be surprised to learn that some of the most beautiful blooms to behold can help in maintaining your beauty. The power of nature never fails to amaze! Starting with the hibiscus, our club flower, examples will be shared in upcoming issues.

PGGC Standard Flower Show!

Friendly Frogs! (and Toads) We talk about the importance of pollinators often, but there are many other creatures that

are beneficial to gardens. Frogs and toads are one example, and providing water and shelter may bring some your way! Frogs and toads eat lots of insects such as mosquitoes, slugs, and beetles. They are also fun to observe and hear in the evenings.

Choose a location in your garden with some “jungle” type growth for the frogs that is out of reach of your dog or cat. Find a small pot or can that doesn’t have sharp edges that may harm the frog. Turn it on its side and bury it a little. Put some leaves and twigs inside. Nearby, provide a water source (or two). This dish should be very shallow and something a frog can easily hop in and out of. You can put some rocks in as launching pads. Keep the dish filled with water and freshen it daily.

A frog’s skin is very porous and can easily absorb toxins in its environment, so go easy on the pesticides, even organic ones, in your garden for the safety of your frogs. Frogs and toads will naturally find your frog habitat if you keep it shaded and moist and give them time. Hopefully you will hear some froggy tunes soon! ~ Mary Yeomans, Environmental Chair
