Blooming Chatter President’s Message

President's Message Hello SGC members, welcome back to a new garden club season. One of our goals this year is making time to have FUN in the Garden. Where did the summer go? While it is still hot and humid here in Sarasota, summer has flown by at the garden club. As usual, summer was much busier that we expected.

A new Rental Committee, led by Chairman Barbara Rao, has revitalized the rental business at SGC and has many plans in progress to increase our rental revenue. The new Fundraising Committee, led by CJ Danna, has been busy mounting a Contributions Campaign to seek donations from the community. The Flower Show Committee worked through the summer to plan our “Pirates in Paradise” Flower Show on October 13, 2018. This year the Plant Sale will be held on the same day as the flower show, and plans are underway led by Anita Laesser to obtain great plants for the sale. Improvements were made to the clubhouse building during the summer. The new fence installation is now complete. New tracks and rollers were installed on the sliding glass doors making opening and closing much easier. Thank you John C! More improvements are in the works, including new window treatments in the great room which Judith Hydeman donated the funds and CJ Danna has ordered. Be sure to take note of the new look in the office, thanks to our Administrative Assistant Dee Haddad. The summer was not all work. We took some time for FUN!! Emily Yaffe, Barbara Rao and Dianne Beaver held a Paper Bag Painting Workshop in August, where creativity, learning, and FUN reigned. Emily has also arranged for LIVE pirates to attend the flower show. Stay tuned for more fun!! Work hard, play hard and remember that YOU are the most valuable resource at the Sarasota Garden Club.

Plants need to be delivered to SGC on Thursday, October 11 or Friday, October 12 between 11 AM – 3 PM. Thanks for your cooperation. Four Volunteers are needed for Thursday and Friday, October 11-12 to help receive, store, and price plants. Approximately 1,000-plus plants are anticipated! We need both 1 and 2 gallons containers with plants. Obviously, if we get trees or larger shrubs they will most likely be in larger pots. Contest: This year we are offering 4 prizes. Two based on total quantity and two on total value so we’re rewarding both quantity and quality. o 1st prize for most plants wins 1 ticket to either Fashion Show or GIP. o 1st prize for most high-ticket ($) plants wins 1 ticket to either Fashion Show or GIP. o 2nd prize for next most plants win 1 ticket to GIP. o 2nd prize for next most high-ticket ($) plants win 1 ticket to GIP. Each member will be asked to bring their plants with the common name (and botanical name, if possible). Identification instructions will follow. Pricing will probably be done at the club (we’re still deciding best way to competitively price plants at this time). It would be helpful and appreciated if you could email the anticipated number of plants that you plan to supply the plant sale ([email protected]). Volunteers are needed for Saturday, October 13, 2018 as follows: o Set-up Crew: 4 volunteers 7:00-9:00 AM o Cashier Crew: 2 volunteers 8:30 AM – 12:30 PM and 2 volunteers 12:30 – 4 PM o Plant Sellers: 4 volunteers 8:30 AM – 12:30 PM and 4 volunteers 12:30 – 4 PM o Floaters: 4 volunteers 8:30 AM – 12:30 PM – 12:30 PM and 4 volunteers 12:30 – 4 PM o Tear-down crew 3:30 – 5:00 PM

SNIPPETS FOR YOUR GARDEN What is a floral designer doing talking about plants and gardening…first of all, one must Grow it to Show it. Secondly, one never passes up an article about growing and planting in the South when one is not originally from here! Southern Living has the best Home and Garden pages for all parts of the South. To share their latest ideas for containers of the month, would be most helpful to the new arrival and the tried and true gardener. This time of year, our gardens, planters and containers look a little frazzled, and tired. Shall we say the bloom is off the rose. To perk up an outdoor, patio, or balcony area find some sun shy plants at the local nursery. Look for cool leafy greens that will withstand the remaining heat of August and September. Southern Living suggested varieties such as arrowhead vine, ‘illustris ‘elephant ear, ‘limelight dracaena, and caladiums. It was noted that these can be put into a tall container that should be watered slowly to be sure that the plant roots absorb the moisture. Outside, on a patio, or balcony or in the house, this makes for an interesting display. If these are not readily available, ask the nursery for their other suggestions. These varieties can handle about on hour of early morning sun and will thrive in indirect light all day. It is fun to create a new planter to tide over the rest of the summer season. Yes, I have learned that there really are Season in Florida… Of course, if you are a fan of Southern Living there is a column not to be missed by the Grumpy Gardener that is always a hoot and quite spot on for growing problems here in our neck of the woods. He discusses aphids, Japanese beetles, crepe myrtles and moth orchids this month. Just reading the article gives one an appreciation for growing and knowing about plants and gardens plus a few chuckles to boot. It is amazing to see how prolific and beautiful everything grows with the abundance of rain and heat that happens here in the South every summer. Come to the Sarasota Botanical Gardens any day and see our lush gardens that our Friday morning group weeds, feeds and maintains and continues to create more beautiful areas. The grounds are kept up by our members all year round. Visitors are always welcome. Kudos to these guys and gals who work out in the heat and rain to keep our grounds looking summer sharp. Also, be sure to visit our gardens in all their glory and come to the Sarasota Garden Club Flower Show and Plant Sale on Saturday, October 13, 9-4 to see what is really meant by you must Grow it to Show it. "Botanical Naming & Nomenclature". Speaker Judy Herman will speak about Binomial Nomenclature: Why do plants have two names? What's the importance of these names? Why aren't they in English? Why is it important for gardeners to learn this nomenclature? And even, how do you pronounce them?

This is a must for gardeners that want to enter flower shows or gardeners that need help with identification of what they are growing. SGC members are always free. And guests are always welcome for a fee of $10.00 each.

We will have a Bring One Plant -Take One Plant Exchange. Please include a name tag on the plant you bring, hostesses: Michele Lewis & Mary Fran Papineau.

September Botanical Gardens Report The long hot & wet, summer is almost over. Many thanks to all the Friday Morning Workers that faithfully showed up

to maintain our 14 Gardens each & every week. We still need extra help in the gardens. I open up about 8:00 a.m. & we

work until about 11:00 a.m. then take a refreshment break , have cool down time, & just visit a while before heading

home. Even if you are a beginner gardener we have a job for you. We even had a student volunteer this summer, Hunter

Cornelius, came 8 Fridays to help in the gardens.

Recent donations to our Gardens: Ralph Weber donated an electric pole chain saw, 2 electric weed whackers & 200' of

heavy duty extension cords; John C. has already put these items to good use; Emily Yaffe donated solar lights to be

added to the Quiet Garden; Jan Johannesen donated Coleus plants for the Falling Waters Garden; and Sarasota County

Butterfly Club member, Susan Kershaw, in memory of her father, William (Billy) Howser, donated over 100 plants to

be used in the Quiet Garden as well as 4 frog statues to be used in the Falling Waters Garden. Stop by and see these

additions as these 2 gardens took the biggest hit when the fence was taken down & a new fence was put back up. Also,

more work was done on the irrigation in these 2 areas. As always, special thanks to all that donate to the refreshments

or money to be used for refreshments each week.

Happy Gardening, Kay Weber , Botanical Gardens Chair

Blooming Chatter Botanical Gardens

Gentleman’s Corner Welcome back everyone! Here’s hoping you all had a wonderful, safe and healthy summer! I am excited to hear about your travels, your fun and all of your exciting times. As we look forward to our new beginnings, first let’s reflect on our accomplishments this summer.

As some of you may know, our fence was completed as part of our preservation project! It looks

great. Thanks to all who worked toward getting ready for the fence and completing the ground

work once it was done. Thank you also to the Selby Foundation for the Grant that made this

project possible!

In continued preservation of our shed, we were fortunate to have an Eagle Scout Candidate ask to do his project with us. In so doing, he coordinated along with us, completion of the shed with hardy board on the west and south sides – take a look. It’s a job well done and serves us and his project as well. BIG NEWS! We now have our sliding glass doors repaired. They will now slide safely and easily with one finger! Thank you Kathryn Johnson for your gift in kind in memory of your husband Martin. This is truly a blessing to our club and something that will bring a lasting memory of Martin. Thank you! We are continuing to work on our list of preservation items. As we look toward our “new beginnings” we are looking for new hands to help in the garden and on the Preservation Committee. Please step forward and let me know if you are interested. Call, text or email – anytime. And we can always use your help in the Garden on Friday Mornings. Thank you all for being a part of our Garden Club. A goal without a plan is only a wish… According to John C.

CONSULTATION REWARDS

Butterfly dreams have come true! The rewards of

consultation with “The Springs” of Lake Pointe

Woods and SGC members LaBries and Papineaus

appeared with an invitation from the Administration

and resident Kathy for a followup lunch/visit to their

Butterfly Garden. Color, adornment and a feeling of

peace and enjoyment permeates this special place as

butterflies come and go. A sense of accomplishment

has unfolded for this resident and the clients residing

there. The garden provides full sun to partial shade

along with a gentle breeze overlooking a serene lake.

Residents delight in its beauty relaxing on the

outdoor patio or viewing from various vantage

points inside the facility: dining room, ice cream

parlor and screened lanai. This passionate dream

was further enhanced with a trellis climbing “Passion

Vine” gift to their garden. Such a vine has a unique

and beautiful flower and will provide caterpillar food

for the State designated butterfly the Zebra

Longwing and the Gulf Fritillary. The dream

continues!

CELEBRATING 60 YEARS

Sarasota Garden Club’s HISTORIC MID-CENTURY MODERN BUILDING

1959-2019 Over 60 years ago members of the Sarasota Garden Club took a leap of faith after much planning and fund raising and built our Mid-Century Modern building designed in the Sarasota School of Architecture in 1959 by John Crowell. It was beautiful and soon the gardens became a show place for our community. After these many years our beloved building desperately needs some major restoration to return to her previous beauty and glory. Our goal to accomplish this is $250,000 by December 2018. How can you help? By participating in one of two programs:

(1) Buy a Brick for our Historic Mid-Century Modern Building by either buying a brick or bricks for each $100 donation. Bricks are customized with your name, a family member’s name, a family name, or business name and will be laid in our garden along with acknowledgement on our Donor’s Board, or

(2) Become a Patron by donating $1,000 to $10,000 and joining other Patrons (both individuals, families, and/or companies). You will be memorialized on a Bronze Garden Plaque to be located in our garden, a brick, and acknowledged on our Donor’s Board.

You can make your donation online at www.sarasotagardenclub.org/contributions or mail a check

to Sarasota Garden Club, Attention: CJ Danna, P.O. Box 5343, Sarasota, FL 34239.

Thank you for your love for our historic building and your continued support!

Sincerely,

CJ Danna

I dig a hole and

plant a seed,

Cover it with dirt,

and pull a weed.

Down comes the

rain, and out

comes the sun,

Up grows my plant,

Oh! What fun!

Dedication of the Reflecting Pool at The Ringling Aug. 23, 2018. What was once a

swimming pool is now the shallower Bolger Family Reflecting Pool dedicated “In honor

of Ron McCarty and his service to Ca’ d’Zan.” See Mable enjoying her pool.

8:00 am every Friday morning, volunteers are welcome to come and garden in

the 14 gardens on the grounds of the Sarasota Garden Club. Meet friends and

share the camaraderie of mind-like members. Kay Weber always has

refreshments.
