We have had a very positive start to the new term with 23 new starters, bringing our total to 47 children in October. This brings some challenges as we settle the children into Playgroup routine, but the staff have risen to the task.

Our theme is ‘Traditional Tales’ and stories include ‘The Three Little Pigs’, ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’, ‘The Little Red Hen’, ‘The Enormous Turnip’, ‘Goldilocks’ and, lastly, ‘The Gingerbread Man’. From these

stories we have incorporated making cheesy breadsticks, potato printing,

growing cress seeds, decorating gingerbread men biscuits, tasting porridge and having a pyjama morning.

Playgroup are supporting Marie Curie Cancer Care's ‘Mini Pots of Care’ campaign this term. The children will be given the opportunity of planting a daffodil bulb in a pot to care for at home.

Christmas Fair Saturday 15th November 11.00 a.m. - 1.30 p.m.

Ho Ho Ho, here we are again! Can you all believe we are talking about the Christmas Fair? Well, it is almost that time of year, and we are thinking of the planning of the Christmas Fair.

As always, I am asking for your help and generosity, which you never fail

to demonstrate. I shall be placing boxes in the porch very soon, clearly marked with items needed to make our

Fair a success; raffle tickets will also be on sale as usual. If any of you would be able to help on a stall, bake a cake, donate a holiday gift or contribute in any other way, please do not hesitate to talk to me. Suggestions for children's games would be most welcome also. I THANK YOU in advance for your never ending generosity, without which our Fair would not succeed. I hope you can all join with us and enjoy the fun and fellowship the Fair always brings. Invite all your family and friends and make this a Fair to remember.

God bless .

Barbara Garness on behalf of the

Fund Raising Committee

I'm aware it's now October, but I'd like, if I may, to take you back to

August, specifically the 25th, as this was the date of our ‘Bank Holiday Monday Funday’, which we held at the Hollybush pub to raise some much needed funds for the group.

After a few weeks of planning and

selling raffle tickets, we kick-started our day at 9.00 a.m. with a visit to McDonald’s for breakfast, before calling into Christchurch to load up the cars with all manner of interesting fun and games. We got to the pub by eleven and started

setting up, ready for doors to open at twelve.

Midday came and went—as did 1 o’ clock, and it was only when approaching 2 o’clock that we finally admitted defeat to the rain and winds and stopped our fire-lighting display, which sadly meant no more marshmallows. With no other outdoor activities being run, we dismantled the coconut shy too before retiring indoors, but not without first undertaking our ice bucket challenges!

Having dried off, now indoors, the children and adults who had come to support us could enjoy cake decorating, face painting, hair spraying, nail painting, colouring and darts competitions, mini bouncy castle, numerous stalls run by local businesses, as well as an abundance of silly games and bad jokes on offer from all the leaders.

We concluded our day around 5.00 p.m. by drawing the raffle and auctioning off all the leftover cakes and sweets, with all the donations going into the final pot.

The total raised on the day (and over the remaining week to September) was a staggering £402.00. This amount is overwhelming, and I was struck speechless when counting all the coins. It's a fitting tribute to the public’s generosity as to just how much they are willing to part with their small change to benefit the lives of others, and this money will make a huge difference to the group. It will allow us to offer

activities which would otherwise have been very difficult to run; already, we've earmarked some of it to buy uniforms.

Such success would not have been achieved without the help from a number of volunteers; to all our leaders who helped, to the merry band of parent helpers and the staff and management at the Hollybush, my grateful thanks go out! Thank you to Brains, Total Produce, Memory Lane Cakes, Spar, Co-op, Cardiff Blues Supporters Club and Premier Grocery Stores, who kindly helped with donations and raffle prizes to make our day run much more smoothly. Finally, THANK YOU to everyone who supported us in any way at all — from helping on the day, turning up to buy a biscuit or toast a marshmallow, buying a raffle ticket or simply by wishing us luck— your continued support and encouragement made all the hard work, organisation and stress worth while.

The tagline that I’d like to give to the experience of Holiday Bible Club this year is ‘Building a Community’.

This year’s HBC was on the theme of Mega Makers, about inventions, machinery, technology, big ideas and big designs all drawing us closer to the greatest creator of them all, God. During the week the children (sorry, apprentices!) constructed models of televisions, telephones, trains and cars, as well as other creative ideas, including our own Tardis!

The Bible references that we followed through the week took us through the gospel of Matthew. On our first day, we met Matthew the tax collector and saw how Jesus’ love was wider than people imagined, as he welcomed Matthew, someone who had been a ‘cheat’ and who others would have rejected, to be his disciple.

On the second day, we saw Jesus calming a terrific storm, showing that his love went deeper than the fears of his disciples, and goes deeper than our own fears.

Our third and fourth days focussed on Jesus’ death and resurrection, proving that his love and the love of God is stronger than any experience of humankind, even death and that

his love lasts forever.

The apprentices made crafts each day to help them to remember what they had learned. They were keen to answer questions, maybe just because there were sweets as a result(!), but it showed how eager they are to learn, and I hope they learned so much more about God’s love as a result.

The phrase ‘building a community’ came to me as, during the holiday club week and beyond, I have seen little steps in a growing community. The most exciting part of this has been in the connections made by the children to their engineer leaders and the church, in getting to know us and to understand that here there are people keen to give them somewhere safe and nurturing to come where they can belong. The children took on their identity as part of HBC, in their respective groups of Drills, Hammers, Spanners, Cogs, Springs and Screws, and have carried their sense of belonging into church and into activities such as youth club too.

From the children’s relationships we have also seen the growing community with their parents as well. Many of our children have

been coming year after year to HBC, and so we are starting to get

Holiday Bible Club

to know them more, and this means that we’ve been able to share things from the week together, as well as things going on in our respective lives. We had a great time on the beach together, including our very special air display from the Red Arrows! It was fantastic (as well as a bit overwhelming!) to have nearly 100 people stay for lunch on the Sunday of Holiday Bible Club, and to see people mixing and interacting was brilliant.

We also saw the growth of a community between the leaders, our engineers. Some are old hands at this by now, others are becoming more confident in volunteering for a 2nd or 3rd year, whilst some joined us for the first time. Our leaders are made up of well-established members of the church, as well as newer members, and they range in age from our 11-16 year old young leaders to, well let’s just say the slightly older ones! The sense of togetherness experienced by the team this year has been great, and it has been an opportunity to get to know each other more and to deepen the relationships between us all.

Speaking from my own experience in what were very difficult personal circumstances for me and my family this year, belonging to this community of leaders, children, families and church gave me much strength, and the love and care

shown by all, even families who have only met us through HBC, was very moving and encouraging. The way that the team pulled together and drew strength from each other reaffirms my belief in the importance of activities such as this being run by church communities. What’s more, if you’re not feeling too great or are in need of a lift, well then Holiday Bible Club is the place to be! Singing, dancing, getting energised and enthusiastic is definitely food for the soul, and none more so than dancing to our theme song ‘Wide and long and high and deep’, which I think qualifies as an aerobic workout in itself!.

So, what did the children think of it all? Well, due to a series of unfortunate events, including a piece of paper, my jeans and a washing machine, you’ll have to wait until next month for them, and for one of our leaders to have a say! But maybe the photos included here will give you some idea of the fun that they had!

So, I would like to leave you now with one final thought: our memory verse, which all the children, however old or young, managed to learn during the week (and who

Page 8: Pulse - October 2014

8

didn’t say ‘aww’ when our youngest two from the Screws groups stood up to say it on the Sunday Morning!):

“I pray that you, together with all God’s people, may have the power to understand how wide and long, how high and deep is Christ’s Love”

Thank you to the people of Christchurch and throughout CEEMP for the cards, texts, emails, visits, flowers, meals, cakes and hugs we have received following Allan’s death.

It was wonderful and uplifting to have so many people attend the committal and his thanksgiving service to celebrate Allan’s life and faith.

With our love and thanks,

Ruth, Michael, Liz, Elly & Milla

Welcome to Christchurch

We are a united church in east Cardiff, and offer a warm welcome to all visitors.

Worship reflects the inter-denominational composition of our congregation. Baptist, Methodist and Covenant Rite Liturgies are used, infant and believer’s baptism and infant dedication are practised. We have an open Communion table at which the invitation is to ‘All who love our Lord Jesus Christ’.

There are many church and community activities during the week, and some special events each month. We have strong links with other churches in our area and hold United Services on a regular basis.
