PULSE is pleased to present this year’s PROJECTS Special Commission by Hector Arce-Espasas, whose sculptural installation Ode to Paradise (Dancers) presents a series of his iconic ceramics positioned throughout a new site specific environment created specifically for PULSE. His ceramic vessels are reminiscent of the overflowing fruit bowls popular in 17th century Europe, which served as symbols of wealth and social class. Here, ripe fruit and tropical imagery coalesce with the body to create a visual meditation on the idea of the tropical paradise, constructing new realities, or rather, new fantasies. PROJECTSis PULSE’s initiative for the presentation and promotion of site specific, large-scale sculpture, installation and performance within the fair environment. The 2017 roster of installations and performances feature works by Fischer Cherry, Jeana Klein, Phoenix Lindsey-Hall, Alan Rath, Aya Rodriguez-Izumi, Hiba Schahbaz and Matthew Sleeth. The works on display will continue PULSE’s dedication to providing visitors with an immersive art experience. This year, artist and queer activist Phoenix Lindsey-Hall’s installation Never Stop Dancing will present 49 white porcelain disco balls that hang in a solemn tribute to the victims of the 2016 Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, FL. Matthew Sleeth’s It Was All A Dream, reimagines the darker side of advertising, while Jeana Klein’s textile installation, Recent Activity documents her public persona on Facebook and serves as a commentary on activism in the age of social media. Through these and other works on display, PULSE encourages artists to engage the fair-going public in social dialogue. “I am excited to continue to grow PULSE’s rich legacy as a presenter of a vibrant and noteworthy program of international art. I will continue to push to create opportunities for the public to experience a deeper engagement with artwork and in particular look forward to seeing how our visitors will interact with the political and social messages championed by many of this year’s PROJECT artists.” says Director, Katelijne De Backer.
