This month, were congratulating one of our sister magazines,Sixer. Celebrating its 21st birthday this year, its been at theheart of the S6 region of Sheffield for more than two decades.Of course, were not the only ones offering our congratulations.
Bradfield Brewery, which has celebrated its tenth anniversary thisyear, has brewed a special beer to mark the occasion. You can readall about the celebration ale on page 40, and also find out just whathas made this local brewery such a success over the last decade.
At this time of year thoughts also turn to the younger generation, who will soon be starting a new school year. The back-to-schoolblues may be a distant memory for most Pulse readers, but weenlisted the help of 15-year-old school girl Molly Pick to remind usof the challenges, pressures and joys that children face at this pointin their lives. Its a great read, and can be found on page 18.
Weve also got a fascinating Looking Back page this month (page30). Not only did we receive even more memories of Ecclesfield Library, mentioned in our June edition, but we also heard from Linda Sharp, the daughter of Wilfred Gillott, whose shop was featured last month.
If you have a story to share, are hosting an event that youd like usto publicise or have photographs of a recent celebration or event, wed love to hear from you. [email protected] or call me on 0114 2506300 (Monday to Thursday 9am-5.30pm and Friday 9am-4pm).
If you have a business and would like to advertise in Pulse, pleasecall Publishing Manager Helen Wragg on 0114 250 6300 or [email protected].
You can also follow us on Twitter(@PulseRMC) or read Pulse (and the rest ofRegional Magazine Companys titles) onlineat www.regionalmagazine.co.uk.

PULSEBACK TO SCHOOL
In September I will be entering Year 11 at Lady Manners School, and I am all too aware of the importance of this year.Throughout the year, I will be sitting numerous controlledassessments for my chosen subjects, before sitting finalexaminations in May. Its what everything over the last few yearshas been leading up to. Since I was in primary school, teachershave been drilling into our heads the importance of theseexaminations, so it can be hard not to feel pressure, especiallywhen it is right around the corner.
For anyone who doesnt know, or has forgotten what it is like tostart a new school year, I usually have a wide mix of emotions.Theres the excitement of reuniting with friends that you haventseen in months, the sadness of summer being over, and thedaunting prospect of starting new classes with new teachers thatyou havent met before.
In September, it often seems difficult to look ahead to a timethat you are going to finish that year. It just seems like you aregoing to be there forever. Its like standing at the foot of a verylarge mountain; you cant see the top yet, although you know itsthere, and you knowthat at some pointeventually you willhave to reach thesummit, but youalmost feel like youllnever be able to reachit. People sometimes call thismuddled mess of emotions theback to school blues.
When I was a little younger,in years 7 and 8, I used to getreally nervous about starting back atschool. It felt like I had been away from school and everything todo with school for so long, and that when I got there on the firstday, it would be like starting a new school all over again. But itnever was. Usually, it would feel slightly different to the year before academic-wise as the work would get more challenging anddemanding, but I still knew everybody, so it wasnt like startingcompletely afresh.
Often, if I have something happening the next day that I amnervous or anxious about, Ill spend hours thinking up all of thepossible different outcomes that I can imagine. Then, when I getthere, its never like any of the outcomes that I originally imagined.I always imagine that when I see friends for the first time in weeksit will be awkward and that we will have nothing to say to eachother, but usually it isnt I just feel excited to finally be seeingthem again. At the beginning of year 10, it felt a lot less like it haddone in previous years. It just felt like a continuation of the previous year, like we had never really left, but there was theobvious pressure from many of our teachers as we began ourGCSE courses.
It is often hard to get back into the routine of things after thesummer holiday. I seem to retain things I have learnt much betterin some classes than others, so in some classes it feels like a madpanic to try and remember everything that I was taught theprevious year.
When it was time to choose what options I wanted to take formy GCSEs, I had a lot of difficulty deciding. There were too manythings that I wanted to do and, since I didnt really know what Iwanted to do in the future, I just chose subjects that I was enjoyingat the time. I did have to sacrifice a few subjects that I really
enjoyed, but I think I chose the right ones because, for the mostpart, I do enjoy school. When we chose our options, it was only halfway through year 9 and I felt rather young and inexperienced tobe making those kinds of decisions, as GCSEs affect the rest of yourlife.
I have thought about what I might like to do after school, but Ikeep changing my mind. I would like to pursue a career in eitherfilm or publishing because I love books and writing and creatingcharacters and stories. Im not sure what I want to study atuniversity but I am planning to go. At school there is help available, and there are several websites we have been shown that can helpus choose career paths and give detailed information on a widerange of jobs that we are interested in.
At the end of year 11, Im not really leaving school because I planto return to Lady Manners for sixth form. However, some of myfriends are planning to attend other sixth forms, colleges orapprenticeships, so it will be sad to see them leave. I find it quitedifficult to imagine finishing year 11 at the moment; I dont reallyknow what it is going to feel like until it happens, because things
like that dontusually happenexactly the waythat you imagine.
In year 11, Ithink you feelmore responsible
for your learning andhomework. You have tomake sure that you arelearning the information in
lessons as you go along. Ifyou do not retain it, when it
comes time to revise for tests, you have a lot of information to goover and learn in a seemingly short period of time.
My favourite parts of school are being around my friends everyday and the various sporting events that we have in the summer.Although, I do really like it in lessons if we are doing a topic I enjoybecause it just makes the lesson so much easier if you like whatyou are doing. Even though there are a lot of good parts to school, there are also some bad ones. I really dont like the pressure ofexams. If it was just a question paper, it wouldnt be so bad, but Ithink the pressure that is put on you to do well and achieve yourtarget marks make them much worse and a lot more stressful.Sometimes, when you are in the exam it can be hard to think ofanswers to questions that you know you know because of theatmosphere and pressures, and then when you walk out of theclassroom and think about it, you all of a sudden know the answerto the question, or realise that you answered a question wrong, which can be infuriating.
One of my favourite school moments happened just a fewweeks ago. Ive been a member of the athletics team since year 8and my favourite activities are the 100m sprint and the long jump.Sadly, were not allowed to be in the team in year 11 as were told itwill distract us from our GCSEs, and many of the exams take placeduring competition season, so we decided to have a group photoafter our last tournament. We all clambered onto the high jumpmat but none of us could stand up properly and we were all fallingover each other. It was a bittersweet moment as we were having somuch fun but we knew it would be the last time we were alltogether as a team. That photo will help me remember all thegood times we had together.
GCSE student Molly Pick describes how the prospect of the newschool year is filling her with a mixture of excitement and trepidation.

PROMOTIONKIP MCGRATH
Proven research shows that Kip McGrath works and canhelp your children achieve their goals.
The Kip McGrath Education Centre in Ecclesfield has beenopen since January. In that time, it has rapidly built upstudent numbers. As part of a much larger franchise, it hasat its disposal a wide range of resources and expertise built upover many years designed to support children receiving tuition.
Kip McGrath tuition is a premium service. It was foundednearly 40 years ago and now has centres in many countries. The UK has 216 centres and is growing rapidly. In June, KipMcGrath were invited to present what they do nationally andglobally to the 19th Conference of Commonwealth EducationMinisters; a first for any private tuition company.
Kip McGrath tuition has been so successful over the yearsbecause, in a nutshell, what they do works. They have programmesof study that are founded on proven research. These are regularlyreviewed and improved but the fundamentals have stayed thesame over 40 years because they work.
Kip McGrath employ qualified teachers, often with a greatdeal of experience in schools. In Ecclesfield, the Kip McGrathCentre is run by David Kaye, a former headteacher with over 25years experience in schools and tuition. Each student has aprogramme that is unique and can be adapted to meet theexact needs of the student at a moments notice.
Some people believe that children are best tutored on theirown. 40 years of experience tells us that this does not workeffectively because students become reliant on the tutor andare unable to transfer their learning back into school. Of course,
none of this works without the commitment and effort ofstudents and their parents.
In the year ahead, look out for the development ofKipOnline; online tuition with real tutors in real time. There willalso be exciting opportunities for children within the localcommunity which Kip McGrath is sponsoring. Watch this space!

FIND YOURMOTIVATIONHow do you beat the Monday blues?Stephanie Burns may have found the answer...
Mondays are always a bit of a challenge in our house.Tackling the beginning of another working week after abusy weekend leaves us struggling to motivate ourselvesby the time evening arrives.
After one particularly action-packed weekend away, we decidedto defeat our usual Monday slumber and continue our adventureswith a trip up to Greno Woods, skirting past the dog walkers andmountain bikers to take in the hidden trails of this north Sheffieldgem. By the time wed finished our walk, we were ravenous anddecided there was only one way to sate our hunger a trip to theBottom Red Lion for tea.
We assumed wed have the place to ourselves but it wassurprisingly busy for a Monday evening. Clearly we werent theonly ones in Grenoside looking to beat thestart-of-the-week blues. Food here is serveddaily 12-9pm and theres an extensive menuand specials board to choose from, withplenty of choice for meat lovers and bothyounger and older children, as well as a fewoptions for vegetarians.
We do not serve fast food, we servequality food as fast as we can wasemblazoned on both the wall and the menu, reassuring us that we were in for a relaxingevening. When eating out, I like to take mytime; being served three courses in quicksuccession ruins the experience.
While we waited for our starters to arrive, abowl full of bread made fresh thatafternoon by 25-year-old chef Tom Atkins was delivered to the table. Having learnt histrade at Whitley Hall and Baldwins Omega,Tom has clearly picked up some excellenttechniques at these Sheffield institutions
and the bread was some of the best Ive tasted. With its beautifullysoft, springy centre and perfect crust, we devoured it in no timeand could have easily eaten bowls more of the stuff. It was a sign ofgood things to come.
It wasnt long after that our starters arrived. Served on hugesquare plates, they looked a treat and tasted just as good. The freshjuicy prawns of my prawn cocktail were doused in plenty of tangymarie-rose sauce and laid on a bed of crispy lettuce, cucumber andtomato; a great summer starter. Across the table, my diningcompanion happily scooped up rich, creamy garlic mushroomswith crispy garlic bread. Portion sizes arent small so, if youvebooked a table for dinner, be sure to have a light lunch.
After a short wait, my partners main course arrived. The enormousRed Lion fish bowl from the specials boardwas fit to burst with deep-fried king prawns, wholetail scampi, sole goujons and calamari, and served with salad and chips. It was justthe ticket for a post-walk indulgence. Aminute later, I heard my dish before I couldeven see it. Served on a hot plate fresh fromthe oven, the sizzling chicken and ribs livedup to its name and was quite a sight andsound to behold. A half rack of ribssmothered in sticky barbecue sauce with asucculent butterflied chicken breast, grilledtomato, mushrooms and a mountain ofexcellent chips made for one heck of a meal.
After polishing off a lemon meringue piebetween us, we practically rolled out of thedoor to head home. If this kind of cookingcan be found at the end of a walk in thewoods, I think we might just make ourevening jaunts to Grenoside a regularMonday treat.

Words: Stephanie Burns
Five bob for Peggy the dogGraham Hartley of Church Street in Ecclesfield called to share hismemories of the Looking Back picture from our June issue. Herecognised Arthur Bull (or little Mr Bull as he was known) with hisdog Peggy.
One of Mr Bulls tricks was to sell Peggy for five shillings in thepub on a Sunday night, he said. He could guarantee she wouldbe back with him by the end of the next week!
Graham also remembered how the librarian Mrs Spittlehousewould ask to see your hands to check they were clean before youwere allowed to select a book.
Family memoriesBeverley Moorhouse from Ecclesfield thought sherecognised her mum, Pauline Lunn, in last months picture. She said: We used to walk past Gillotts on our way to andfrom Ecclesfield Junior School. This photo could have beentaken when my mum was walking to school to collect me ormy sister.
Linda Sharp, the daughter of Wilfred and Rose Gillott whoowned and ran the shop which was one of the first of itskind also got in touch. She said: Dad camefrom a well known Ecclesfield familywho lived as caretakers at thehistoric Feoffees Hall (alsoknown as the Council Hall) onYew Lane until the 1950swhen it was demolished tomake way for the BritishLegion Club. We then movedto Chapeltown.
Dad ran the shop with familyhelp from the 50s until the 70s,when the site was compulsorilypurchased to make way for a road. No roadas yet. Dad went back to his trade as a builder until he retiredin 1981. Sadly he died in 1990, but mum (aged 96) still hasthe house in Chapeltown.
My sister Ann emigrated to Australia with her family in1968, and my brother Chris lives in New Zealand, so that maybe where the idea that we had all emigrated came from. Iemigrated to Barnsley.
Incidentally, I too can remember Miss Spittlehouse of thelibrary in Ecclesfield. In those long-ago pre-TV days, Ann andI read avidly and were often in the library or next door in thesweet shop.

PULSECELEBRATION
KEY TO THE DOORWhat better way to mark the 21st anniversary of our sister magazineSixer than with a commemorative beer, produced specially byBradfield Brewery. Stephanie Burns reports on our Celebration Ale.
In September 2006, the good folk at Bradfield Brewery made usour very own beer. The introduction of Farmers Sixer was alandmark moment for Pulses sister magazine and it soonbecame a well-respected addition to Sheffields beer collection.
Nine years on, were delighted to have partnered up with thebrewery once again for the launch of Celebration Ale, which hasbeen especially brewed for our 21st birthday. The light-colouredsummery ale of around 4.5% will be exclusively available in S6 pubs including the brewerys very own Nags Head from early August.
Its nice to be a part of Sixers birthday and its our tenthanniversary this year too so its a real year of celebration, saysbrewery owner John Gill. Weve followed the magazine since thebeginning and always looked forward to getting it. And weve beenadvertising the brewery in the magazine since we opened.
The Gills made up of John, his wife Susan, their daughter Lisaand son Richard are a dairy farming family by trade and WattHouse Farm, nestled in the rolling hills of High Bradfield, has been inSusans family since her grandad took over the tenancy in 1944. Allwas well until the price of milk plummeted at the turn of themillennium and, struggling to make ends meet, they were forced todiversify.
It was Richard who came up with the idea of producing their ownbeer and, in March 2004, work began on transforming the cow shedinto a brewery. Experienced head brewer Paul Ward, who is still withthem today, was employed to oversee the process and the firstbatch was finished on 26 April 2005.
Since then the brewery has produced a whole host of award-winning beers and now distributes to pubs and shops all over theUK. The most well decorated of them all is Farmers Brown Cow 4.2%.Most recently scooping bronze in the best bitter category of the2015 Rotherham CAMRA Beer of Yorkshire Awards, this richchestnut-coloured ale has a creamy head, a citrus aftertaste and along, dry finish.
Joining Farmers Brown Cow in the permanent range is FarmersBlonde 4%, Farmers Pale Ale 5% (which won gold in Rotherhamsstrong bitter category), Farmers Stout 4.5%, Farmers Bitter 3.9% and
Yorkshire Farmer 4%. All of these, and Farmers Sixer, are alsoavailable by the bottle and mini-keg.
Originally a limited edition, Farmers Sixer was officially launchedat the Sheffield Beer Festival in September 2006 and proved sopopular particularly in bottles that its been kept on ever since. Atrue Indian Pale Ale (IPA), its brewed strong at six per cent (see whatwe did there) and delivers a fruity, refreshing finish.
While wed like to say that the creation of Farmers Sixer andCelebration Ale is a unique concept for the brewery, in reality theGills need no excuse to come up with something new and there areplenty of seasonal brews available throughout the year.
If youre expecting a more detailed description of CelebrationAles taste, however, were afraid youll be left wanting. The only wayto really tell if youll like something is to taste it, says John. Im notone for tasting notes you either like it or you dont. What I will sayis that the simpler something is, the better it sells.
True to form, Celebration Ale isnt the only special ale the Gillshave produced this summer. Blueberry, a slightly weaker version ofthe hugely popular Christmas ale Belgian Blue, is being brewed withsunny summer days in mind. This refreshing malty session ale of4.4% has fruity, spicy overtones and of course the well-loved bluetint to the head.
These special editions are partly possible because the brewingprocess is actually less arduous than you might think. You can brewa beer on a Monday and sell it the next week, explains John. Ittakes three or four days to ferment in a conditioning tank then itsready to put into bottles or kegs. Beer wants selling fresh, though. Its not like wine it doesnt get better the longer you leave it.
The simple yet effective approach carries throughout thecompany. Fresh spring water is extracted from the farms ownborehole, which was drilled especially for the brewerys launch in2005. Along with carefully selected malts and traditional hops, theybelieve this contributes greatly to the taste.
The former farmers clearly knew what they were doing when theydecided to diversify away from milk towards beer and werecertain that, like the rest of their tasty brews, Celebration Ale will bea storming success.

Trusts arent just for the rich and famousOften associated with comedians, pop stars and politiciansattempting to shelter their money from the tax man, Trustssometimes get a bad name. It is a little known fact that Trusts havebeen used for hundreds of years they date right back to whenwealthy land owners began gifting their land to a friend or relativeto look after, whilst they went to fight in the Crusades. A Trust is likea safety deposit box you can place your valuables in it (such asyour home, savings and some investments) and it will protect themfrom a number of threats. It can also provide flexibility over how andwhen they are passed on to future generations.
Trusts to protect your home and savingsTrusts are commonly used to protect assets for loved ones. The CareAct 2014 introduced new rules, but many people will still have tofund their care in later life from their savings and the value of theirhome. With the right advice, using a trust can protect your homeand savings from the high costs of care, allowing you to pass whatyouve worked hard for to your children and grandchildren.
Disabled beneficiary TrustsA Trust can be used to provide for a disabled child (or otherbeneficiary) who is either unable to manage their own affairs, or isan unsuitable recipient of a lump sum inheritance due to its impacton their means-tested benefits. Leaving an inheritance to abeneficiary in receipt of means-tested benefits can mean thosebenefits stop, and the inheritance you have provided acts as areplacement rather than a fund to provide some of the luxuries youwant your beneficiary to enjoy. Leaving the inheritance outright toanother individual with the hope they will use it to benefit yourdisabled child carries with it some inherent risks most notably ifthat individual suffers financial or marital difficulties. Using a Trustavoids these problems.
Children and Grandchildren TrustsFor those who wish to provide an inheritance to their children andgrandchildren, but are concerned about how that inheritance mightbe spent or the effect of their intended beneficiaries sufferingmarital or financial difficulties, a Trust is a valuable estate planningtool. Holding an inheritance until your chosen beneficiaries meetcertain criteria set by you, a Trust can ensure the wealth youveworked hard to pass on is used in the way you intended for housedeposits or university fees perhaps. A Trust can ensure your childrenand grandchildren dont inherit until they reach a certain age, or thatthey can only use the inheritance for certain things.
What next?Using the right Trust for your personal circumstances and objectivesis vital, so taking advice from a specialist is an important first step.Request free information by calling Collective Legal Solutions on0114 288 1104.
