Building a campus culture of academic success and nomenclature between student clubs of Sierra College and campus departments divisions programs and scholarships

A PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS the Sierra Community College District carries a rich history of student clubs with names that are similar to campus departments divisions programs and scholarships

WHEREAS the financial and organizational structure of the college has expressed confusion regarding student clubs with names that are similar to campus departments divisions programs and scholarships

WHEREAS student clubs of Sierra College shall not use a name already designated by an existing Sierra College department division curriculum or scholarships

WHEREAS the Puente Club of Sierra College enjoys a thirty-three year statewide tradition as experienced by more than sixty California Community Colleges with student clubs that carry the Puente name

WHEREAS the Puente Club of Sierra College enjoys a new relationship with Puente Programs and clubs in the state of Texas

WHEREAS the Puente Club of Sierra College recognizes the supportive relationship with students of the Puente Program and its correlation with student access retention persistence and academic success

WHEREAS the Puente Club of Sierra College welcomes the recent addition of student clubs with names that derive from Spanish African Native American and other languages and embraces these additions as an opportunity for students staff and faculty to enhance learn and embrace diversity as a means toward achieving equity

WHEREAS the Puente Club of Sierra College joins more than sixty student government associations of the California Community Colleges that support the Puente Club at each of their individual campuses

THEREFORE the Puente Club of Sierra College wishes to maintain its name and join the long-standing practice and tradition as experienced by other clubs of Sierra College with names that are similar to campus departments divisions programs and scholarships

THEREFORE the Puente Club of Sierra College supports the exploration of new opportunities to clarify any confusion by the financial and organizational structure of the college regarding student clubs with names that are similar to campus departments divisions programs and scholarships

THEREFORE on this eighteenth day of November in the year two thousand and thirteen the Puente Club of Sierra College through a thoughtful process of collaboration and transparency supports a shared governance process to formalize and continue the rich and long-lasting tradition of student clubs who proudly and respectfully carry the names that are similar to campus departments divisions ro rams and scholarships
