experiencias a nuestros estudiantes. Juntos vamos a trabajar para ayudar a todos los estudiantes a

alcanzar las expectaciones rigorosas de “NYS Common Core Learning Standards” y aumentar el

    rendimiento de los estudiantes.

    Atentamente,

June 2015 Dear Incoming Kindergarten Family, Welcome to all of you who are new to our school. My name is Nina Lipton, and I am the Parent Coordinator for P.S. 139Q. My role is to support and involve you, the parent community, in your child’s education. I am here to answer your questions and assist you with school matters. In September I will be sending you important information regarding ways we can build a strong partnership between your home, your school, and your community. During the upcoming summer months, I will be providing you with information about events in our community, and throughout our wonderful city. My only means of communicating with you during the summer months is via cell phone or e-mail. You can contact me by leaving a voice mail at 347-563-4461, or by e-mailing me at: [email protected]. At the bottom of this letter there is a tear-off to join our school’s e-mail group. I urge you to complete the form and return it to me today, or e-mail me directly with the information requested on the tear-off. Many important notices about events taking place here at P.S. 139Q during the school year are sent via e-mail (and by flyers in your child’s backpack). Any questions or concerns you have can be addressed quickly using this means of communication. Please take the time to complete the tear-off and return it to school as soon as possible. I look forward to the exciting school year ahead and to our partnership in education. I’ll see you in September and will communicate with you via e-mail throughout the summer. Have a safe and fun-filled summer with your family. Sincerely,

    Nina Lipton

The Chancellor’s Regulation A-413 permits school-based policies on the

use of electronic devices by students.

Student Cell Phones and Other Electronic Devices Policy April 2015

In order to ensure a safe environment, enabling communications between children and their

families, before and after school, cell phones may be brought to school. Cell phones and

electronics are to be turned off, and not to be used during the school day. This includes (but not

limited to) locations such as outdoor lineup, cafeteria, classrooms, bathrooms, gym, hallways,

stairwells, and play yards; as well as during meal service (breakfast and lunch), after school

programs, field trips and on all school buses.

    During Test Administration

During test administration, students are not permitted to bring electronics. In 2012, the New

York State Education Department established a policy prohibiting cell phones and other

electronic devices. On assessment days, students will be asked to turn over any electronic device

at the start of the school day. Administration will collect, label and store said items until the end

of the day. If any student is found to be in possession of these electronic devices, after this

collection, their tests may be invalidated.

    Confiscation

If a student uses an electronic device in violation of school policy, or in a manner that causes

disruption to instruction or school activities or programs, staff should direct the student to

comply with school rules, and notify administration. Levels of response may include – directive

to put the device away, if seen and not used; to confiscation of the device and returned at the end

of the day; to confiscation of the device to be picked up by parent. Where applicable, measures

will be implemented in a progressive fashion. Subsequent confiscations may result in revocation

of privilege of bringing devices to school.

    Use of Electronics

Scholars who use cell phones, computing devices, and/or portable music and entertainment

system in violation of any provision of the DOE’s Discipline Code, the school’s policy,

Chancellor Regulation A-413, and/or the DOE’s Internet Acceptable Use and Safety Policy will

be subject to discipline in accordance with the guidance interventions and disciplinary responses

set forth in the Discipline Code.

  • Class Parent – Class List – Translation Bank Dear Parent/Guardian,

I would like to invite you to be part of the Class List for your child’s class. The list is useful to parents and students who may need homework assignments, information on projects, and to contact friends to plan play dates. This list will only be distributed to the students who have completed and returned the Class List form below. If you would like to be included on the Class List, please complete the form below and return it to school by Friday, September 12, 2014. You do not have to place your name on this list. You do not have to complete all of the personal information on the form – only the information that you are comfortable sharing. Your child’s teacher will distribute the list as soon as it has been completed by one of the Class Parents. We are looking for Class Parents to help reinforce the home – school connection. The Class Parent is a parent who will act as a liaison between the teacher and other parents in your child’s class. There can be more than one Class Parent in each class. (Guidelines are on the back of this letter) This year we would like to continue our Translation Bank - a Resource for parents who do not speak English as a first language. If you speak another language and would be willing to help another parent with their translation needs from time-to-time, please check the appropriate box below. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at the phone number or e-mail address below. Thank you in advance for your support of these projects. I look forward to meeting with you during the year as we support your child’s scholastic and social development. Sincerely,

  • Class Parent Guidelines

Class List: This is one of the most important responsibilities of the class parents. Prepare or find another parent to prepare the Class List (create and distribute – a sample will be provided). Inclusion on the list is voluntary and the list will only be distributed to those participating. A class list is useful for a variety of reasons, i.e. homework assignments, play dates, etc.

Class Liaison: Class Parents act as liaisons between the Parents’ Association and the parents in your individual classes. You can provide information to those parents who are unable to attend meetings but who want to know what is happening in the classroom.

Class Events: The Class Parent will work with the teacher to coordinate special events in and out of the classroom, i.e. celebrations, parties, trips.

Recruiting Volunteers: This is actually the most important responsibility – Volunteers make a school successful. The Class Parents are needed to help recruit volunteers, and to let the volunteers know how important it is to participate in various school events. The Class Parents help to identify the parents in each child’s class who would be willing to help, but aren’t always sure how to get involved. The more parents we have volunteering, the more successful our partnership and events will be. All parents are automatically members of the Parents’ Association so the Class Parents are serving as extensions of the P.A. You are their quiet voice!

Translation Bank: We have a very diverse population at P.S. 139 that speak many languages. We welcome the parents who will be willing to translate during special events (Meetings, Parent/Teacher Conferences) and to explain to other parents in their language what is being done in the classrooms and to help explain any questions they might have about homework or special events.

We welcome your ideas and will provide all the support and samples of documents that will help you as Class Parents get organized. There can be more than one Class Parent in each class – so there is a lot you can do. You can be a working parent and still be a Class Parent! Let’s strengthen the Home-School Partnership! We’re looking forward to a great year!

September 9, 2015 RE: Procedures on Days with Citywide Emergency Conditions or on Major Storm Days Dear Parent/Guardian: This letter explains the procedures we follow on a day with citywide emergency conditions or a major storm day. The Chancellor will make an announcement to all public schools in the city on whether to close schools or delay their opening. This announcement is made in consultation with other City officials. All authorized delayed openings will result in the regular starting time being two hours later (Please note that, in addition to this two hour delay, all tutoring or test preparation programs will be cancelled, as well as all field trips, all adult and continuing education activities, and all after-school activities – see below.) By 6:00 a.m., the decision is announced on the 311 Information Line and will be posted on the Department of Education website Home Page http://schools.nyc.gov, in addition to DOE social media outlets https://twitter.com/nycschools and https://facebook.com/NYCschools or sign up for text updates Text “nycschools” to 877-877. It will also be announced on the following radio stations in the city: WINS (1010 AM), WCBS (880 AM), WABC (770 AM), WLIB (1190 AM), WADO (1280 AM), WBLS (107.5 FM), WNYE (91.5 FM), as well as the following television stations: WCBS (Channel 2), WNBC (Channel 4), WNYW (Fox Channel 5), WABC (Channel 7), Univision Channel 41, and "NY 1" (Channel 1 on Time Warner Cable television). Major radio news stations, such as WINS (1010 AM) and WCBS (880 AM), should be listened to on portable radios in the event of a major blackout. The school telephone number is: 718-459-1044. Our Parent Coordinator: Nina Lipton can be reached at: 347-563-4461.

    The regular school hours are: 8:00 a.m. – 2:20 p.m.

If there is an authorized delayed school opening the school hours will be: 10:00 a.m. – 2:20 p.m. When there is an authorized citywide school closing or delayed school opening, the following will be cancelled unless the Chancellor makes an announcement to the contrary: all field trips, tutoring or test preparation at the start or at the end of the regular school day, all after-school programs (including Community-Based Organization after-school programs on public school sites), all after-school program transportation (including transportation to after-school programs at Community-Based Organization sites), all Adult and Continuing Education classes, all Young Adult Borough Centers, and all evening GED programs. When there is an authorized citywide delayed school opening, school buses will run, but their arrival times will be delayed by two hours. Morning prekindergarten programs within public schools will also be cancelled. It is expected that when there is a delayed opening, all end of day extra sessions will be cancelled. As a result, all students will be dismissed at the regular time. However, if citywide emergency conditions or a storm worsen, the Chancellor may have to announce an early dismissal. The Chancellor will notify bus services of the earlier dismissal schedule. You should advise your child to tell the teacher if no one will be at home at the time of an authorized early dismissal. You should have plans in place with a relative, friend or neighbor in case your child is released early and you will not be at home to care for him or her. Your child should know of your plans. Please note that you must have listed that relative, friend or neighbor on the school’s “BLUE EMERGENCY CONTACT CARD” because schools are not authorized to release pupils to persons not listed on that card. You may also identify on the card a person or persons who should not have access to your child, as well as indicate the actions you would like the school to take if none of your listed contacts can be reached. The school will follow your recommendations as much as possible. It is important that you make certain that the card is up-to-date. If your child takes a school bus, school staff will remain in school with the bused children until buses arrive for dismissal or until your child is picked up. If you have a child with a disability, you should use your discretion in deciding whether to send him or her to school when there is a delayed opening. If your child has medical or other health issues requiring nursing or other services during the school day, including services requiring a nurse or paraprofessional to ride on the bus, you should consider not sending your child to school. Please be reminded that your child will not be picked up if a nurse or paraprofessional who is required to ride with him or her is not aboard the school bus. September 11, 2015 Dear Parent/Guardian, As part of our learning experiences here at P.S. 139Q from time-to-time we take our Kindergarten students on “Nature Walks” and “Neighborhood Explorations”, so they can discover various parts of their natural environment and familiarize themselves with the wonderful neighborhood they live in. We take these walks to enhance the learning experiences and lessons that we are focusing on in the classroom. In order for us to take your child on these wonderful walking experiences we need to have your permission on file. Please sign and return the attached tear-off today, or return it to school no later than Wednesday, September 16, 2015. Your consent will be effective for the 2015-2016 school year. As always, thank you for your support of our students and our school programs. Sincerely, Natalie Perez-Hernandez Principal IA
