Public Life
Much of the public life of Athenian men took place in the marketplace, or agora. Here men met
to buy, sell, and discuss ideas and events. Public buildings built in the Greek classical style
lined the Agora.

At Home in Athens
Greek women maintained their simple mud-brick homes and, if rich, supervised slaves. Only
poor women worked outside the home. They prepared simple meals, which rarely included
meat.
Slavery in Ancient Greece
The work of slaves freed Greek citizens to focus on government, ideas, and the arts. Some
slaves were foreigners who had been captured in war. They had no political rights and their
children were also slaves.
