This sounds preposter-ous and racial. What on earth is this radi-cal forum that wants Indians to be excluded from black eco-nomic empowerment and affi rma-tive action? Who is Zweli Sang-weni? Where does he come from? He indicated that the forum stood by its demand that Indians be excluded from BEE, affi rmative action and equity policies. I want to say to Zweli Sangweni that this

forum is racist and has no place in a democratic South Africa.

Sangweni further stated that he wants the ANC government to leg-islate and formulate the forums request. I hope that Zweli Mkize is not another Jimmy Manyi whether KZN or the whole of South Africa is controlled by Indians should not be the issue. At last the Indians are creating job opportunities. The majority of the blacks who cant read and write are employed by

Indians on the domestic front and in other businesses. Zweli Sang-weni must not worry about Indi-ans controlling this and that.

Since arriving in this coun-try in 1860 our forefathers toiled to get this country going. Due to the arrival of the Indians in South Africa it is a prosperous and stable country. Where was Zweli Sang-weni when the Indians arrived in this country in 1860?

Local pastor Balan Padayachee has launched a toll-free 24-hour prayer call line to help the local commu-nity deal with its problems which include alcohol and drug abuse.

Pastor at Pentecostal Miracle Mission in Regina Road, Northdale, for the past 29 years, Padayachee said that close on 100 calls had already been received since the call line started two weeks ago. E-mails had also been received.

The calls were an indication of the social and spiritual needs of the community which the church was hoping to address, he said

What is important to note with this is that there will be no fi nancial burden on the caller because it is a toll free line, said the pastor.

There are currently two operators who respond to calls as well as 30 volunteers who assist after hours. It is hoped to later extend the service nationally.

Urgent attention is required in Stella Road before another acci-dent happens!I travel this route daily and for the

past two months I've witnessed confu-sion amongst vehicles driving on Stella Road because of trucks parking in the road, blocking the way.

Every morning I witness angry and annoyed drivers hooting and cursing. This could turn nasty or lead to a road rage inci-dent. When travelling up New Holmes way and turning left into Stella Road, parked trucks block the entire lane. We cannot see

oncoming traffi c and have no choice but to drive on the oncoming traffi c lane. The owners of these trucks are selfi sh individu-als who do not consider fellow road users.

Furthermore this is a daily school route for many vehicles. We've kept quiet for two months assuming this is temporary but these heartless people have conveniently made this into a permanent parking bay 24hrs a day.

In response to my letter of 25th January, a ratepayer, R. Govender, concedes that some councillors are dedicated; I am happy to have enlightened a ratepayer. However, your corre-spondent now shifts the goal posts to service delivery issues, (Public Eye, February, 15).

Complaining and being grumpy about councillors, inter-alia being an arm chair critic is not proactive. Expose your slothful councillor to the Municipal Manager and take the initiative to exploit the open door policy in the city hall.

Also support organisations

like the Msunduzi Rates Forum (MRF). The rejuvenation of our city is our responsibility too we must display a sense of civic pride. On the contrary, many rate-payers elect to be complainers and depend on a small group to take up their cause! Our city is severely challenged after the 2010 mismanagement, notwithstanding that, we are showing some healthy signs. The refuse collection seems to be sorted out, but, there remains a lot to be accomplished. No doubt, there are opportun-ists amongst the councillors. This opportunism is aggravated by

their ignorance of how to serve at grass roots level and worsened by their conceit and egotism. Such parasites that prey on us must be exposed and rooted out.

An example of civic pride exists in my ward in Granadilla Crescent. A group of senior citi-zens approached city hall and suc-ceeded in getting the open public space with overgrown grass and litter facing their homes attended to.

The grass has grown again. The councillor obviously is indifferent as he or she has no objection to bush facing his or her front door.

Mr Govender, kickstart civic pride in your immediate area and look at what can be done for your environs. There are many cases of residents and civic pride but due to space constraints I cannot list them.

Finally, in the initial letter,

Govender appealed to ratepay-ers to join Mr Sunny Gayadins association. What are the achieve-ments of this association which would convince ratepayers to join?

The arrest of Oscar Pisto-rius for the suspected kill-ing of Reeva Steenkamp, should serve as a warning that vio-lence between intimate adults is real and rife in our country. This is a wakeup call to all of us, that vio-lence against women is existent and cannot be ignored.

What really surprised me and possibly many conscience driven people is that so few link the mur-der of Steenkamp to abuse or domestic violence. Not all domestic violence results in violent killings,

but every case has that potential.Spousal abuse is a complex and

an outlawed subject in most com-munities and needs to be carefully investigated and exposed.

Are girls equipped with the nec-essary knowledge, tools and skills to effectively respond to abuse? Do our laws effectively address and redress the harms suffered by women subjected to spousal abuse or domestic violence?

Many women believe that very few community or religious leaders know how to handle spousal abuse

or domestic violence. And in most cases they are not really prepared to engage men who commit this despicable act.

In order to ensure lasting and quality marriages and for every woman to enjoy their fundamen-tal human right to live a life of dig-nity and free from abuse, we need to design and implement effective programs in our institutions to pre-pare our young people for mar-riage, parenthood and other social responsibilities.

Kia Cerato Sedan

We drive newmodel in Dubai

Kia is one of the world's fastest growingbrands, which is not surprising whenyou consider the models they currentlyoffer and will still be bringing to our market.

They have doubled their sales from 2008 to2012, and this has happened during the worldrecession. From 2008 to 2012 they also launched30 new and updated models. From 2012 to 2016they are planning on bringing 51 new or upgradedmodels to our roads.

With this in mind Kia starts the 2013 onslaughtwith the international launch of their all newCerato Sedan.

It was off to a pleasant wintertime Dubai for abrief drive of the car that will be getting to SAaround May.

It is to be followed by a five-door hatchback andtwo-door coup later in the year.

The car is longer, lower and wider than thecurrent model, with an extended wheelbase. It alsofeatures a new re-engineered body shell structure,upgraded equipment with a host of additionalconvenience and safety features.

There is a more spacious cabin with enhancedquality, improved refinement and an upgradedpower train to remain competitive in a segmentthat has seen the likes of Hyundai's Elantra takethe fight to Toyota and the SA Car of the Yeartitle.

For now we will be getting 1.6 and 2.0-litrenaturally aspirated models with a choice of six-speed auto and manual gearboxes. As part of theworld's downsizing campaign, a 1.6-litre tur-bocharged petrol offering in the five-door hatchand Coup could also become a reality in the nearfuture.

The new 2.0-litre MPI engine, with a manualgearbox is said to accelerate to 100km/h in 8.5seconds and 9.3 seconds for the automatic whileattaining a top speed of 210km/h. The combinedcycle fuel consumption claim for the manualmodel is 6.9 litres/100km.

With the Gamma 1.6-litre power there is aclaimed top speed of 200km/h and a 0-100 km/hfigure of 10.1 seconds and 11.6 seconds for theautomatic. For the manual model, combined cyclefuel consumption is said to be 6.5 litres/100km.

This should see you get a range of about 650 kmfrom the new 50 litre fuel tank.

The specification of the new Cerato's fullyindependent MacPherson strut front suspensionand coupled torsion beam axle rear suspension isunchanged. Both systems have been fine-tuned toimprove agility, enhance shock absorbance anddeliver greater refinement though.

But we only drove the 1.6-litre automatic on thelaunch. Although the route was hardly dynamic orhigh speed in nature, our car was more than up tothe task of what I am sure is going to be consideredhonest, well priced but well specced transport.

Where it did get it a little wrong was with Kia'snew FlexSteer system that is available as anoption, and I would personally avoid it. It providesthree different settings (or weights) for the steer-ing to try and match your preference with Normal,Sport and Comfort modes. The effort required toturn the wheel varies with mode, and they dochange at the push of a button. But once you haveselected Comfort, youthen have to remem-ber to select, say, Nor-mal when you get outof town - and thenmaybe engage Sportalong the way, andthen remember to goback to Comfortwhen back in town orback to Normal whenrequired.

It is far too userdependant to get themost out of the sys-tem. We kept forget-ting to change set-tings on launch andeventually opted forSport and left it there.

If they want to get this technical in what is notexactly a sports car, Kia, like other manufacturers,should rather put effort into a system that au-tomatically adapts to the speed of the car. But thisis not the biggest failing of this particular system.None of the selected options feel natural and havethe potential to spoil what is a great driving car in

its segment.For maximum stopping power, the new Cerato

can offer, model dependant, with an all-discbraking system featuring large diameter 280mmventilated front discs and 262mm solid discs at therear further backed up by ABS anti-lock.

The interior of thenew Cerato is goodplace to be with lotsof soft touch mate-rials and plenty spacefor passengers andl u g ga g e .

The cockpit is welllaid out and places allthe major and minorcontrols within easy-to-operate reach. Theexact specificationlist of the cars we aregoing to get must stillbe finalised, but overthere even the 'entry-level' model was de-cently equipped withprojection-style

headlamps, electric front windows, power steer-ing, trip computer and external temperature dis-p l a y.

The next model up offered a chrome radiatorgrille, body-colour door handles and exteriormirrors and a radio/CD player with four speak-ers.

An optional 4.3-inch touch-screen audio system

with TFT LCD display was also available.One step up from there you got front fog lamps,

cruise control, central locking, electric rear win-dows, driver's seat height adjustment, 60/40 splitfolding rear seat backrest, twin tweeter speakersand adjustable rear seat air vents.

Top of the range saw 17-inch alloy wheels, LEDdaytime running lights, LED rear light clusters andhigh level brake light, upgraded cloth upholstery,three-mode FlexSteer power steering and paddleshift for automatic models, plus front and rearparking sensors all being offered as standard.

Some of the available options (depending onmodel) included 10-way powered and ventilateddriver's seat, heated front and rear seats, leatherupholstery, powered glass tilt-and-slide sunroof,smart keyless entry with engine start/stop buttonand Xenon headlamps.

There is Bluetooth hands-free system withsteering wheel-mounted remote controls, auto-matic windscreen de-fogging, plus manual anddual-zone climate control automatic air-condi-tioning.

You also get up to six airbags, with dual frontairbags, front side airbags and side curtain airbagsand ESC (Electronic Stability Control) for a fivestar Euro NCap rating as standard or optionalfitment, again depending on model and market.

Pricing should see a small increase over thecurrent car's numbers that start at R196,995 for the1.6 manual and end at R232,995 for the 2.0 litreauto.

The bottom line is the new Kia Cerato is going tobe a very good car that offers plenty at the price.

The Kia Cerato is more spacious with enhanced quality, improved refinement and an upgradedpower train. The new model will be in South Africa around May.

Lets not beat about the bush here, theToyota 86 is probably the most an-ticipated sports car in a very, very longtime. Since the very first whisper of the projectfound its way onto the pages of the internet,budget limited motoring enthusiasts have leftno stone unturned in the search for details andmaybe a glimpse at a spy shot.

Its no wonder when you consider Toyotasrecent history yielded nothing more interestingthan wall paper paint, leaving the 86 a noveltyspot on their showroom floors.

The fact that Subaru had a lot to do with thecars development has also helped a great deal inthe media build up to its release.

Look at the facts and it sure does live up to thehy p e .

Front engined, rear wheel drive, light weight,simple engineering it reads like a purists man-ifesto.

Well, until an automatic gearbox showed up onthe options list that is.

Installing an automatic gearbox in a sports carof this nature may seem completely daft but thispaddle-shifter swaps ratios in a fifth of a second,holds the gear even at the limiter and boasts rev-matching blips during downshifts.

Despite the surprisingly clever gearbox tech-nology, I cannot help but agree and say it iscompletely daft to have introduced an automatic86.

A fact that becomes crystal clear when youshift through third, fourth and fifth during a boutof spirited driving - the rapidly falling revs anindication of the torque-less 2.0-litre boxer motoron the other side of the gearbox.

The problem is that all the wonderful powerand torque is right at the top of the rev range, so

if youre not revving the nuts off youre not goinga ny w h e r e .

Yes, if youre prepared to put in the work it ispossible to keep the revs somewhere near the6,800rpm sweet spot - but if youre prepared towork at the paddles that much you may as wellhave bought the manual.

Leave the gearbox to its own devices (which iswhat most people do in an auto) and youll soonbecome frustrated with the performance.

All this comes as a real disappointment in theface of what is otherwise an exquisite drivingmachine.

The 86 is perfectly balanced, with faultlesslyweighted steering, exceptional feel and out-standing levels of grip, that when exceeded, iseasily controllable. It really is that good dy-n a m i c a l l y.

Its also remarkably good looking, with almostclassical sports car influences.

In fact a Toyota 2000GT arguably the bestlooking Toyota of all time was placed next tothe clay model of the 86 during development.

Without receiving any specific instructions,the designers continued their work, occasionallyglancing up at the 2000GT.

As a result, their work infused the 86 with itsancestors spirit.

Its a real pity Toyota added the option of anautomatic gearbox to the 86 range.

It detracts significantly from the ethos of thecar and by extension its overall impression.

That said, at around R300,000 I would have noreservations recommending the (manual) 86 toanyone out there looking for a fun sports car.

Value for money like that just cannot bematched.

Popular singer Shashika Mooruth will star in the Ishk show at the Aryan Hall, Raisethorpe on Sat-urday (23 February). Also performing will be the Nagara Touch group from Phoe-nix with their Chutney Jol. The group includes one of the youngest nagara play-ers in the country, Sonu Iswarlal, who is only 10 years old. The show starts at 7.30pm

I always want to offer something dif-ferent and unique to my audiences. Ishk means love and this is February the month of Valentine. I am sure that my choice of nostalgic love songs will go down well with my audience says Shashika.

She is backed by a team of musicians led by Tansen Nepaul. Shashika delighted Pie-termaritzburg audiences last year when she accompanied the great bhajan singer, Anup Jalota, in his concert here.

Shashika was honored in 1995 at the World Hindu Conference in South Africa for her contribution to Indian music. In 2011 she was congratulated by the Indian Consulate General, Mr. Anil K. Sharan, for her contribution to art and culture in South Africa and earlier this month she was rec-ognized at the Indian Cinema Centenary Awards held at Suncoast Supernova for her contribution to Bollywood in KZN.

Despite having settled in India for her music, and traveling worldwide for her concerts, she still makes a point of touring South Africa where she grew up..

Nagara Touch have fast become a household name as well. Established in November 1997 by the father and son team of Deeps and Amith Arjoon, the group of nine mem-bers, including danc-ers, has become a household name for their nagara per-formances. Valentines season has been declared the busiest time of the year by city fl orists.

According to Jenny Abraham manager of Sax Young Florists in Wembley centre who has been a fl orist for 42 years, every year they get orders for Valentines Day early January.

This year was no different for Abraham; she told the Public Eye to meet her more than 300 Valen-tines Day orders for baskets and bunches of roses she had order in 3 000 roses, the bulk of which were red.

We ordered our roses from the Johannesburg rose market which in turn orders from coun-tries like Mozambique and Kenya. We order a variety of roses, dif-ferent types and shades to suit our customers.

Another fl orist in the city said he was swamped with orders for Valentines Day deliver-ies. I would have to go through my order book to determine how many orders we received because I lost count. It was really busy this year, couples went all out.

The Public Eye established that majority of the clientele was male, Women did place orders but it was mostly going out to their par-ents or friends not their spouses.

Restaurants in the city were also fully booked. Speaking to the Public Eye Olive and Oil manager said they were fully booked for both lunch time and the evening. They offered their evening diners a special Valentines Day menu.

RJs Steak House manager said they were also very busy on Val-

entines Day and that every table was occupied. Lindani Zondi, operational manager at John Dorys, told the Public Eye they had a big Valentines Day turnout compared to 2012. It was a special day for him. He took the opportu-nity to propose to his girlfriend in morning.
