Two-year-old Michael Sullivan of St. Louis, Missouri, recently recovered from a crippling attack of infantile paralysis, knows what THAT fight is like. Michael was aided in his tussle with the Crippler by the March of Dimes. This year’s appeal, January 14-31, will help thousands of youngsters to win out against infantile paralysis. .v ll At St. Catherine’s Hospital, East Chicago, Indiana, little Dick Berg enjoyed a tasty dinner in spite of being wrapped in hot- packs. A victim of infantile paralysis, the youngster received the best modern care and treatment thanks to the March of Dimes which this year occurs Jan. 14-31. Since this picture was taken, small Dickie has been returned to his home in Highland, and to- day is an active," healthy bby again, completely recovered from the crippling effects of infantile paralysis. 3 More Years (Continued from Page One) the thousands, but on the home front where greed, avarice and com- placency are rampant, he said. Sermon On Faith Captain Rickenbacker’s talk was more than a plea for all-out support of our fighting men. It was a ser- mon in which he stressed the need of spiritual faith and a re-dedication of the nation’s religion. In closing, the captain told his audience: ‘‘lf you haven’t got that simple, humble faith (in God), get it, and get it quickly, because you will need it in the grim days to come.” The nation must be prepared for three more years of war—three years of the hardest, most desperate kind of fighting—at least 2.000,000 casualties and a debt of 500 to 600 billion dollars, Rickenbacker warn- ed. “Yet,” he added, ‘‘no matter what it costs to win, it will be insignifi- cant to what it would cost us to lose, or what it will cost us to have another, even deadlier war.” He talked as one American, who perhaps more than any other, has a right to speak. In stinging phrases, he lashed out at bickering, com- placency and indolence on the home front, and in hushed tones, his voice charged with deep emotion, he told of unmatched bravery, devotion to duty, willingness to sacrifice and endurance of indescribable misery by the millions of Americans on the fighting fronts. As special adviser to the secretary of war, he has visit- ed every fighting front in the world. Finds Slacking It was on one of his trips to the South Pacific that the plane carry- ing his group crashed. He and seven others drifted in rubber life rafts for 21 days before being res- cued. He referred to this rescue as | “my fishing trip,” and spoke only I briefly concerning it: I ‘‘l was fortunate ana made a U. S. War Prisoners Fear We Underestimate German People American prisoners of war in German prison camps can- not understand why strikes are permitted in our defense in- dustries and seem to feel that Americans as a whole do not understand the terrible seriousness of this war, according to Larry Allen, noted war correspondent who spent twenty months in Axis prison camps. And German newspapers are making the most of these defense strikes as a means of stiffening German resistance. Allen’s first-hand impressions of what American prison- ers think about in German prison camps are given in an ar- ticle in the January issue of Cosmopolitan magazine in which he lists as the major thoughts of the American captives: LEGAL NOTICE LEGAL NOTICE NOTICE OF REDEMPTION OF BONDS BY THE CITY OF NOGALES BEFORE MATURITY NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN, that the City of Nogales, Santa Cruz County, Arizona, will on February 15, 1945, redeem the following numbered and described bonds issued by the City of Nogales, of the denomination of $1,000.00 each by paying the principal amount thereof plus accrued interest to such date of redemption, to-wit: Bonds Nos. Description of Bonds Date Issued. 4 City Hall Refunding Bond August 15, 1937 72 to 76 Incl. Waterworks Refunding Bonds August 15, 1937 And that interest upon said bonds shall cease to accrue after such date of redemption. DATED January 3, 1945. ALEX L. DURAZO, City Treasurer, City of Nogales, Arizona. (Publish: January 5, 12, 19 & 26, 1945.) “How anyone could strike in a*® defense industry in the United States when men were dying for their country, and why the Presi- dent and Congress did not outlaw all walkouts for the duration. “That we didn’t want silly senti- mental letters from loved ones back home, but all the news they could put into them. “That our home folks should write more and more often and send only food in private parcels, for that was what we needed most. “That anyone in the United States who complains about conditions or food rationing ought to have a taste of life behind barbed wire, for then he would appreciate how much he has. “Whether, when it was all over and we got back home, we should quick recovery, but I brought back my group and returned them to their families as hospital cases—the group minus one we left behind in the Pacific. I came back to find rampant absenteeism, shirking and profiteering all over the home front, even though the vast majority of Americans are honest and earnest.” He said that he had ‘‘escaped the Grim Reaper oftener than any man has a right to,” and ascribed his good fortune entirely to his faith. ‘‘l have come back and I have escaped, because I believe and have full faith in a power above. The only religion I have is the one I learned at my mother’s knee. But I believe in the Golden Rule, and have tried to apply it throughout my life. If there were no power above, I wouldn’t be standing here today. Because I have always be- lieved in that, my life has been happier, simpler and more interest- ing than it ever could have been otherwise.” Tells Os Suffering His description of the conditions under which Americans are fighting around the world—ranging from the bitter cold of the Aleutians to 160- degree heat in India and Burma was graphic. He told of visiting Guadalcanal in the early days after the Marines had made the initial invasion, and how the Jap shells and bombs came every night. “I was just as glad as the next man to hit the slimy, filthy slit trenches when they did,” he said. “When you worry about little re- trictions and hardships, getting steaks, butter, sugar, gasoline for a week-end jaunt, or you can’t get into the movies or get just the seat you want, please remember this: “No matter how much or what you give up, no matter how much or what you give to the war effort, it is insignificant compared with what these men are doing through- out the world. What they are doing see the usual flag-waving and after that get a gentle brush-off—‘Sorry, buddy, no jobs open.’” But the principal concern of the American prisoners appears to be that the homefront has no realiza- tion of what we are up aganist, ac- cording to Allen, who quotes Lieu- tenant Thomas Holt of Oak Ridge, N. C., as saying: “You know this worries me. Some people back home think this is go- ing to be a walkaway, but over here we know the Germans will fight as’ long as Hitler lives. This might go on for years unless we put into it everything we’ve got.” “I know, too, from my own ex- perience,” Allen states, “that the Germans are bitter in their hatred of us and our Allies and appear de- termined to fight to the last gasp." makes it possible for us to be gath- ered here as we are today. “And on bond buying—if you be- lieve in this country, buy a stake in it. If you don’t, get out. The least we can do on the home front is finance the war front. Those men out there are paying not with dollars but with their lives, and with maimed bodies. You have to see it to understand it fully.” BUY WAR BONDS and give the change to tight INFANTILE PARALYSIS JANUARY 14-31 Pacific Brokerage Company, S . A.
