Psychology II Thurs, 2/23 Info to know: Prostaglandins were first discovered in human semen around 1935, and today we know that they are found in almost every human tissue. Prostaglandins act like chemical messengers, but they work within the tissues where they are synthesized. Researchers are working to understand ways in which prostaglandins may be able to help control cardiovascular disease and viral infections. Researchers are also focusing on understanding ways to prevent prostaglandin synthesis, which may prove useful in pain control, preventing asthma attacks, and in reducing the ability of blood to clot. In 1982, three biochemists received the Nobel Prize for their work concerning prostaglandins and related biologically active substances.

Depth Perception

• How does overlapping help us decide which objects are closer than others?

• How is the word depth used in perception as compared to how it is used to describe deep, as in lake?

• Which appears to have a detailed texture, an object that is far or an object that is near? Why?

• Why is motion parallax considered to be the most complex monocular cue?

• In what way is there a similarity between retinal disparity and convergence?

Page 6: Psychology II Thurs, 2/23

Perceptual Constancies• Why did the Mbuti people not develop size constancy?

• What are the perceptions of change that occur to colored clothing due to color and brightness constancies when someone is outside in daylight and then enters a darkened theater?

• What role does learned experience play in shape constancy?

Page 7: Psychology II Thurs, 2/23

Ch 4, Sec 5/Ch 4 Summative Assessment Part 1: Perception

• If you have notes, yea for you• If you don’t have notes, then make a quick outline of the

Section (don’t define things)• You will each be assigned a concept about perception to find

(or draw) a picture that illustrates it to someone who does not know the concept.

• Include a caption to explain your concept.• Make your picture and caption electronic.• Email/electronically give it to Alena and Morgan. They are

going to compile and organize it into one presentation.• You can then present it to your HR and get extra credit.
