San Francisco, CA
Program Chair: Mary Ann Cohen, M.D.
CME Committee Chair: Silvia Olarte, M.D.
Chair of the Scientific Program Committee: Eugenio M. Rothe, M.D.
Conference Learning Objectives: This meeting has been designated to meet the following professional practice gaps and the needs derived
from those gaps:
Gap #1: Improving treatment of patients by:
A. Attaining sufficient knowledge of psychodynamic principles and the ability to apply this
knowledge.
B. Enhancing the ability to integrate dynamic principles, psychopharmacology, and neuroscience in
clinical practice.
Needs derived from the gaps above:
A. To learn about development of therapeutic alliances; transference and countertransference; the
handling of challenging situations; and practical applications of psychoanalytic theories.
B. To learn about complex pathologies, neuroscientific advances, pharmacological treatments, and
medical conditions and their implications/ramifications for psychodynamic psychotherapy.
Gap #2: Enhancing training of residents and early career psychiatrists
Needs derived from this gap:
A. To learn new ways of engaging residents and training them in the complex theories and
techniques of psychodynamic psychotherapy.
B. To foster learning of complex theories and techniques of psychodynamic psychotherapy by early
career psychiatrists.
All presentations must address at least one of the specified needs.
The Academy expects the results of its CME program to be improvement in competence or performance.
Definitions: “Competence” refers to knowing how to do something. “Performance” is what a psychiatrist
would do in practice if given the opportunity.
Target Audience: Psychiatrists, psychoanalysts, psychodynamic psychiatrists, psychosomatic medicine
psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, early career psychiatrists, trainees, residents, and students.
The American Academy of Psychoanalysis and Dynamic Psychiatry is accredited by the Accreditation
Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for

A Message from the Program Chair Mary Ann Cohen, M.D.
The 2013 Annual Meeting program is both exciting and relevant to
your practice of psychodynamic psychotherapy. This year’s theme
emphasizes the significance of psychodynamic psychiatry in
meeting the some of today’s most complex challenges. With
suicide as paradigm, the program will cover topics that include the
nature of psychodynamics, analytic psychology, psychodynamics
of suicide and its aftermath, physician-assisted suicide, and
combat-related trauma and its consequences. We will explore
these challenges from biopsychosocial and cultural perspectives
consistent with the mission of the Academy. We invite you to join
us at the 2013 AAPDP Annual Meeting in the beautiful city of San
Francisco.
Modern day psychiatry and medicine are under siege from
disturbing internal and external pressures for productivity,
efficiency, and cost containment. Some of these pressures result in
less time for patients, defensive medicine, fragmentation of care,
and dissatisfaction on the part of both physician and patient.
Psychiatrists, psychodynamic psychiatrists, and their patients may
be most exquisitely vulnerable to these pressures. Clinical
challenges are magnified and care of patients compromised as
productivity pressures mount. Suicide and other self-destructive
behaviors are among the greatest challenges we face. In this
meeting we will describe the nature of psychodynamic psychiatry
using suicide as a paradigm. Our program is relevant for
psychoanalysts, psychodynamic psychiatrists, child and adolescent
psychiatrists, psychosomatic medicine psychiatrists as well as
general psychiatrists, and trainees.
Our goal is to demonstrate the salience of psychodynamic
psychiatry in the evaluation and care of patients, in maximizing
life potentials, and in the prevention of suicide and other self-
destructive behaviors. We explore the impact of pressures for
productivity on countertransference and clinician satisfaction as
well as patient satisfaction. Through film, symposia, workshops,
and an emphasis on interactive participation of attendees we
provide a reference frame for understanding psychodynamics as an
essential component of modern day education and practice of
psychiatry and medicine.
This year, thanks to the work of our 2013 Annual Meeting
Program Committee and in conjunction with AAPDP President,
Dr. Michael Blumenfield, CME Committee Chair, Dr. Silvia

The Academy is where physician
psychoanalysts and psychodynamic
psychiatrists: discover a forum for
exchange of ideas; find a voice within
the APA to advocate for psychodynamic
understanding in the evaluation and
treatment of patients; take a leadership
role in promoting the importance of
psychodynamic training in residency
and medical education.
Olarte, and Scientific Program Committee Chair, Dr. Eugenio Rothe our topic is an exciting one
and our three plenary speakers are internationally known award-winning psychiatrists. Our
Opening Night Speaker, Mardi Horowitz, M.D., Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry at
University of California San Francisco, has written 20 professional books and over 280 scientific
articles in the fields of PTSD, stress, personality, and psychodynamic psychotherapy. His
outstanding presentation, Grieving as well as Possible, will begin our program.
Our Keynote Speaker, Dilip Jeste, M.D., is President of the American Psychiatric Association.
Dr. Jeste is the Estelle and Edgar Levi Chair in Aging, Director of the Sam and Rose Stein
Institute for Research on Aging, and Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry and Neurosciences at
the University of California, San Diego, and at the Department of Veterans Affairs San Diego
Healthcare System. Dr. Jeste will present some of his ideas on the unique relationship between
wisdom and aging in his keynote address on Wisdom: From Psychology to Neuroscience.
The Presidential Address will be presented by Herbert Pardes, M.D., former President of the
American Psychiatric Association. He is Executive Vice Chairman of the Board of New York-
Presbyterian Hospital and New York-Presbyterian Healthcare System and served as Director of
the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and U.S. Assistant Surgeon General during the
Carter and Reagan administrations. Dr. Pardes was also appointed to serve on commissions
related to health policy by Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton, including the
Presidential Advisory Commission on Consumer Protection and Quality in the Healthcare
Industry and the Commission on Systemic Interoperability. Dr. Pardes will present his thoughtful
work on health care policy in his address on Psychodynamics in a Turbulent World of Health
Reform.
The meeting theme and program are consistent with the mission of the Academy “To provide a
forum for the expression of ideas, concepts, and research in psychodynamic psychiatry and
psychoanalysis” and “To constitute a forum for expression of and inquiry into the phenomena of
individual motivation and social behavior.” It is also a great opportunity to network and
collaborate with our colleagues, to reunite with old friends, and to meet new ones. To that end,
we are planning to bring back the traditions of a cocktail party on Thursday night and a welcome
reception on Friday night of the meeting as well as other chances to get together in the warm and
welcoming atmosphere of our meeting. We will continue the tradition of the Award Dinner on
Saturday night.
Our 2013 Annual Meeting promises to be a wonderful educational experience, a chance to share
your ideas and network with colleagues in a beautiful setting. I hope to see you in San Francisco
in May!
