Crossing the last

quarter of 2016, it is

encouraging to note that

several milestones have been

crossed successfully and we

are moving closer towards

the targets set in our

research activities. The

breakthrough in seed

production of orange

grouper, an important food fish, the successful captive broodstock

development and larval rearing of a marine ornamental serranid are

critical first steps in building robust technologies for their culture in

controlled conditions in the future. Several training programmes

relevant to the needs of the stakeholders have also been organised

and this can be further enhanced to reach the concerned

stakeholders. As we move into a New Year 2017 let the vision of a

clean, healthy and vibrant marine fisheries sector in the country guide

and motivate our activities.

The Honourable Secretary, DAREand Director-General, ICAR,

Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra made a brief visitto the Mangalore Research Centre ofICAR-CMFRI on 11th December 2016.He was accompanied by Dr. M. G.Nayak, Director, NRC for cashew, Puttur.The Scientist-in-Charge, Dr. PrathibhaRohit and the staff of the Research Centreextended a warm welcome to thevisitors. The DG was briefed about themajor activities and achievements of theResearch Centre and the vital role playedby the Centre in the field of marinecapture and culture fisheries. Expressinghis happiness on the good work done atthe Mangalore Research Centre, DGasked the scientists to make an impactanalysis of the fish culture in small-scalecages demonstrated by the institutewhich is now widely practiced by thecoastal fishers of the region.

I n a major breakthrough for themariculture sector in the country,

ICAR- CMFRI has succeeded in the massscale seed production of orange spottedgrouper (Epinephelus coioides), and theachievement is the first of its kind in India.The hatchery seed production of thespecies, achieved by the VishakapatanamRegional Centre is expected to boost thesea cage culture enterprises in thecountry. The orange spotted grouper isa commercially important carnivorousfish with high market demand in manyparts of the world. Although initial successin seed production of the fish wasachieved in 2014, the survival rate of thelarvae was very low. After manipulatingdifferent water quality and feedingprotocols, enhanced survival rate of>10% was achieved this time. Thelarvae are now in advanced fry stage witha size of around 3 cm after 42 days ofrearing in the hatchery and ready to bemoved to the nursery rearing phase.After this the fingerlings can be used formariculture in grow-out cages. Orangespotted grouper is a potential species for

mariculture because it is compatible withhigh temperatures hardy in nature andhas high market value. In most of themajor fish landing centres, the fish fetches` 400-450 per kg in wholesale market.The live fish sale in international marketsfetches 3-4 times higher prices, indicatingthe prospects of mariculture of thespecies. Orange spotted grouper formsthe mainstay in the world Live Reef Food

Fish Trade (LRFF) particularly in severalAsian countries such as Hong Kong,China, Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia.In India, it is distributed on the east andwest coasts.

The tribal community in ThandasseryColony in Maradu Municipality were

ecstatic as they got a bumper harvest ofpearl spot (Karimeen) in the cage cultureproject of ICAR-CMFRI started eightmonths ago under the Tribal Sub Plan(TSP) programme of the Government ofIndia. During the harvest, the farmers gotpearl spot having an average weight of300 g from two 4x4 m cages made of GIpipes. Fingerlings of pearl spot werestocked in the two cages at a density of20 numbers per square metre. Pearl Plus,

the feed developed by the institute forpearl spot farming was used in the cageculture which had the participation of fivetribal families in Thandassery. The ICAR-CMFRI team under the leadership of DrBoby Ignatius, Principal Scientist trainedthe tribes in the farming activities andempowered them to becomeentrepreneurs in cage culture enterprise,a less expensive farming method. Anilkumar, Chairperson of MaraduMunicipality inaugurated the harvest inthe presence of Dr A Gopalakrishnan,Director, ICAR-CMFRI. Dr ImeldaJoseph, Chairman of the TSP in ICAR-CMFRI, Vinu Joseph, Councillor, Mr.Rajendran, Leader of the tribal group inthe area and Mr. Prakashan, leader of thefarming group were present on theoccasion.

Installation of GI cages in Pulicat under theTribal Sub Plan programme

Under the alternative livelihoodprogramme for the Tribal

community in coastal Thiruvallur, thefishermen members of the Irulars inSenjiamman Nagar, KottaikuppamPanchayath were chosen as thebeneficiaries and trainings were extendedto the young members. Four GI cageswere fabricated and installed on 19th

November 2016, in the northern end ofthe Pulicat lake near the bar mouth, afternecessary siting studies and consultationwith the Wild life department officials and

other fishermen communities. As theculture conditions favour euryhalinespecies, Asian sea bass was chosen forculture. 7-8 cm sized seabass seedprocured from Rajiv Gandhi Centre forAquaculture (RGCA), Sirkazhi was stockedin the nursery hapas on 19th November,2016. Training on grading was extendedon 25th of November 2016. Two familieswere identified to operate the cage unitson a daily basis. The cage units also servethe community as a temporary grow out/live holding unit for locally fished species

(Pearlspot, mullets, milkfish, scads,carangids, snappers) caught at smaller sizesin usual fishing methods so that higherearnings are possible.

The emerging seaweed farmingindustry in the country will get a

major boost, with ICAR-CMFRItransferring its technology of seaweedcultivation suitable for the Islands to theAndaman administration. The scientificinputs on methods of seaweed farmingcame as the institute's initiative forintensifying its consultancy services.ICAR-CMFRI has recently developednutraceutical products from seaweedssuch as CadalminTM Antidiabetic extract(ADe) to combat type-2 diabetes andGreen Algal extract (CadalminTM GAe),to combat arthritis. Seaweed cultivationis generally perceived as an environmentfriendly mariculture activity while afeasibility study in South Andamans by ateam of ICAR-CMFRI scientists revealedthat these regions are highly favourablefor seaweed farming. Practical trainingon methods of monoline culture methodincluding fabrication of floating rafts withbamboo, tying of seed material (seaweedfragments) in the ropes and seeded ropesin the bamboo rafts besides collection ofwild seaweed and identification of

commercially important seaweed specieswere given to the participants from theFisheries Department of Andaman Fieldvisits were arranged to the seaweedfarms at Munaikadu, Thonithurai and

Kottaipattinam and the seaweedprocessing unit at Manamadurai. Dr. A.K. Abdul Nazar and Dr. B. Johnsonof Mandapam Regional Centre co-ordinated the training programme.

As part of the follow up of therecommendations by India-

Bangladesh Joint Working Group (JWG)on Co-operation in the field of fisheriesand aquaculture, technical guidance in thearea of marine fish stock assessment wasimparted by ICAR-CMFRI to Bangladeshfor developing necessary manpower andexpertise in the area of marine fish stockassessment, a significant tool forconserving the fishery wealth. Inassociation with the Bay of BengalProgramme Inter-GovernmentalOrganisation (BOBP-IGO), ICAR-CMFRItrained the selected 12 middle-levelofficials from the Bangladesh FisheriesDepartment, Bangladesh FisheriesResearch Institute in Mymensingh and theInstitute of Marine Sciences and Fisheries,University of Chittagong, Bangladesh.

The officials were trained on using variousstatistical tools, softwares and applications

for the assessment of fish stock andrelated data collection. Concept of

genetic stock characterisation usingmolecular markers and its relevance forstock assessment, practical sessions andfield visits were given importance in thetraining. The trainees were also providedan opportunity for fishing experienceonboard the institute's fishing vessel SilverPompano. Dr. E. M. Stakeholders Consultation ontuna fisheries held at VeravalVeraval Regional Center of ICAR-

CMFRI hosted the Stakeholdersconsultation on Tuna Fisheries for theBay of Bengal Programme-Inter-Governmental Organization (BOBP-IGO) under the Ocean Partnership forSustainable Fisheries and BiodiversityConservation - Models for Innovationand Reforms programme on 22nd

October, 2016. The Programme wasinaugurated by Dr. Y.S. Yadava, Director,BOBP-IGO. Dr. E. Vivekanandan,Technical Advisor, BOBP-IGO, Shri.Veljibhai Masani, President, GFCC, Govt.of Gujarat, Shri. Jagadishbhai Fofandi,

President, Veraval Municipality, Shri.Lakhanbhai Bhensla, President, Sea FoodExporters Association, Gujarat and Shri.K. Mohammed Koya, Scientist In-Charge,Veraval RC were present. Around 70stakeholders comprising fishermen skilledin tuna fishing, exporters, processors andtraders, officials of the CIFT, MPEDA, EIA,Collage of Fisheries, JAU, Department ofFisheries, Govt. of Gujarat, WTI etcattended the programme and activelyinteracted in the discussions on futuredevelopmental plans and road map forthe development of tuna fisheries inGujarat.

Cage culture trials initiated in Ashtamudi Lake

As a recent initiative under All-IndiaNetwork Project (AINP) Mariculture,

one 4x4m floating cage made of 1.5 inchGI pipe with net cages was installed inKochuthuruth, Ashtamudi Lake. 400 seedsof sea bass of 8-10 g size reared atVizhinjam Research Centre of ICAR-CMFRI were stocked on 2nd November,2016. A group of five farmers fromKochuthuruth Island have been selected forthe demonstration programme. Farmerswere given training on cage culture aspectssuch as fabrication of cage, floatation,mooring, preparation of net cages andstocking. Sea bass seeds reared in sea waterwere acclimatized to brackish water of 20ppt and weaned from pellet feed to trashfish before stocking. Initially there was anattack of cirolanid isopods which wascontrolled by regular cleaning of net cagesand by shifting the cage to an area withmore water flow.

Research Highlights

A new species of mackerel identified

A new species of mackerel named asIndian chub mackerel, Scomber

indicus which is distinctly different fromthe other members of the mackerelfamily both morphologically andgenetically has been identified from thewest coast of India (available in [email protected]). The fish was first foundoff Gujarat coast in 2015, later it appearedin other areas of the west coast of Indiaup to Kanyakumari. This year, the speciesis reported only from Kerala waters beingcaught mainly by ring seines and trawlsand in small quantities by hooks and lines

operated around knolls which is landedin fishing harbours of Kochi, Vizhinjam,Alappuzha, Kollam and Kozhikode.Mainly immature fishes were landed this

year, and catch is being monitoredcontinuously to understand their biologyand interaction with other species.

Copepod Apocyclops sp. nov. isolated for live feed

Life cycle of hatchery rearedApcoyclops sp. nov., a cyclopoid

copepod, was studied in the live feedlaboratory of Karwar Research Centre.This hatchery reared copepod was fedwith different microalgal diets, namely,Nannochloropsis occulata, Chlorellavulgaris, Isochrysis galbana andChaetoceros calcitrans, with a density of1x 108 cells/ml. Variations were observed

in the fecundity of the copepod and theaverage egg production per day rangedbetween 25 and 35 eggs/female/day.Maximum number of eggs wereproduced by Chaetoceros fed copepods,with 90% hatching rate and a survival rateof 95%. When fed with differentmicroalgal diets, wide variations (25% to100%) in the survival rates of nauplii intoadults were observed. The shortest life

cycle (8 days) of cultured Apcoyclops sp.nov., was recorded when fed withChaetoceros, whereas the life cycle waslengthy (15 days) when fed withChlorella. The study revealed thatChaetoceros is the best algal diet for highfecundity and survival of this cyclopoidcopepod isolated from Karwar waters.(Reported by Jayasree Loka, S. M. Sonali, Purbali

Breakthrough in captive broodstock development andbreeding of Marcia’s anthias

Successful captive brood stockdevelopment and spawning of the

marine ornamental serranid commonlycalled the Marcia’s anthias, was achieved

at Vizhinjam Research Centre of ICAR-CMFRI. This research work were doneunder the All India Network Project(AINP) on Mariculture. Pseudanthias

marcia of the Subfamily Anthiinae is oneof the most expensive reef fishes tradedin the marine aquarium export trade andfetches around $25 per fish in

international market. Being protogynoushermaphrodite with complicatedbreeding habits, reports on captivebroodstock development and successfullarval rearing are not available. AtVizhinjam Research Centre, brood stockof this species was developed in 5 tonRecirculation Aquaculture System (RAS).A total of 12 wild caught juveniles werestocked in the tank during the month ofMay, 2016. Spawning took place on 22nd

December 2016, after 7 months ofrearing in the RAS. The eggs hatched outthe next day after an incubation periodof about 14 hours. Around 4000 eggs inoptic vesicle stage of embryodevelopment were collected from thebroodstock tank. The newly hatched

Viral Nervous Necrosis (VNN) in broodstock of orangespotted grouper detected

Viral Nervous Necrosis (VNN) orViral Encephalopathy and

Retinopathy (VER) has been reported inseveral cultured marine fish speciesworldwide. The causative agent isBetanodavirus that usually causes highmortality in fish fry and broodstock fishes.Affected fishes exhibits darkening of bodycolour, no response to feed and swirlingmovement and hyper-inflated swimbladders. Temperature plays animportant role in the replication andpathogenicity of piscine nodavirus and inmost Asian countries it has been reportedfrequently during summer months.VNNhas been earlier reported in broodstockfishes of orange spotted grouper indifferent countries, however for the firsttime the study confirmed presence ofVNN from orange spotted grouperbroodstock maintained in recirculatorysystem and sea cages fromVisakhapatnam Regional Centre of ICAR-CMFRI. A total of 9 brooders (4 fromsea cage and 5 from RAS system) of sizeranging between 3 to 6 kg observed with

symptoms were collected and tested forVNN using reverse transcriptasepolymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) withOIE listed primers specific for detectionof VNN in groupers. Total RNA wasextracted from tissue samples collectedfrom brain, optic nerve, gills and gonadregions. First strand cDNA wassynthesised using Oligo dT Primer andthen the target gene for VNN located inRNA2 was amplif ied with specificprimers. Presence of 430 bp ampliconin agarose gel electrophoresis confirmedthe VNN infection in the fishes. Theexpression of viral load was more in thetissue collected from brain and opticnerves. The amplified products weresequenced and submitted in NCBIGenbank database (Accession no:KX608915 & KX608916). Generally,VNN carrier broodstocks are the sourceof inoculum of the virus to their larvae.Therefore, pre- spawning screening ofbroodstocks for VNN using PCR is veryimportant. Only VNN-negative fishshould be used for broodstocks and

spawn from these brooders, obtained bydisinfecting the fertilized eggs with ozone,be used for preventing the verticaltransmission of the disease to the larvalrearing system.

Unusual landing of largesized queenfish

Heavy landings of large sizedqueen fish (Scomberoides

commersonnianus) locally known as“Katta” in trawl net (Meenmadi) fromPamban area was recorded at Therkuvadilanding centre, Gulf of Mannar on 21st

November 2016. Such high volumes oflandings are rare. The average length andweight of the fish landed was 96 cm and 7

Unusual landings of Bullseyes by ring seines

Unusual landings of Priacanthushamrur,was recorded on 6-7th

October 2016 at Cheruvathur landingcentre in Kasargod District, Kerala. Thecatch was landed by six ring seines andtheir carrier boats. These ring seiners

operated 2 to 3 hauls per day. Total catchper haul was about 1,500-2,000 kg. Thering seiners operated about 8-10 km offCheruvathur fish landing centre, at adepths ranging from 24 to 26 m. Thelength range of the fishes were around

17 cm, and total estimated landing of thespecies on the observation days was35 t. The price ranged from ` 20 to` 25 per kg.

Occurrence of large sized cobia in Lakshadweep

Fishery for cobia (Rachycentroncanadum) by hook and line operation

is slowly emerging in the Lakshadweep

waters. A large female cobia that measured84 cm was reported from hook and linefishery off Kavaratti. The occurrence of

small sized cobia only has been reportedearlier from Lakshadweep seas.

Report on unusual occurrences in Lakshadweep seas

The September to November 2016period was replete with many

unusual phenomena in the marinefisheries sector of Lakshadweep.Unusually heavy landings of fishes liketunas, trevallies, rainbow runner, queenfishes, scads, bill fishes, wahoo, needlefishes, milk fishes, cobia, rays, parrotfishes, Bullseye etc. occured in drift gillnets from 12-20th September at Androth.As a result, the prices of all varieties ofthe fishes crashed to record low levels.The billfishes and wahoo usually sold @` 400-500 per kg was sold for < ` 100per kg and rainbow runners were soldfor < ` 20 per kg. The gut content ofthese fishes caught in drift gillnet andencircling gill nets from Androth Islandduring 12-16 September 2016 indicatedmassive feeding on sprats and smallprawns suggesting the aggregation ofthese forage organisms near the Islandduring the period. A massive bloom thatremained for nearly one month occurredin Lakshadweep Sea from 17th

September, 2016 onwards. The colourof the water in the near shore areas

between Kalpeni and Androth Islands on18th September 2016 was murky. A fairlyhigh mortality of reef associated fishes liketrigger fishes, surgeon fishes, parrot fishes,groupers, squirrel fishes, butter fly fishes,box fishes and turtles were observed atAndroth Island from 9th Septemberonwards. Many fishes were foundsurfacing and making circular movementsas late as second week of October 2016.Swarms of blue and gold fusilier (Caesiocaerulaureus) used as tuna live bait, wasrecorded during dusk hours near theKalpeni Island from 23-25 September2016. The sizes of the fusilier rangedfrom 18 to 20 cm and during the sameperiod, Yellow fin tunas measuring >100cm (total length) were found in theMinicoy lagoon near the Thundi-ViringlyIslets. Swarming of millions of stripedround herring, Spratelloides gracillis, ahighly preferred tuna live bait, near thebreakwater area at Androth island during2 - 6 October 2016 was observed.Several tonnes of these fish were caughton all the 5 days. Subsequently, theswarms disintegrated, and formed

comparatively smaller shoals spread intowider areas and were available in theusual fishing grounds near the Island. Thevery large spawning aggregations arelocally known as ‘Manzhachala’ andlivebaits in quantity sufficient for nearly 10pole and line units can be easily caught ina single haul from such aggregations.During the same period thousands ofblue stripe snapper, Lutjanus kasmirameasuring 15-18 cm formed large shoalsand were caught in encircling gill nets.Stray numbers of soldier fishes and bull’seye were also caught along withsnappers. Landings of big sized torpedoscad and seer fishes like Scomberomoruscommerson and S. guttatus was alsoobserved in the gill net catches at Androthduring October and November 2016.On an average 15-20 members ofWahoo weighing 20-25 kg each werelanded by the troll line units operated offElikalpeni Bank area. An earthquake of5.3 magnitude was also reported on 12th

Discussion with stakeholders regarding mussel farming

Unprecedentedheavy spatfall of

mussels

Heavy spatfall of green mussel, Pernaviridis, was observed in intertidal

and sub-tidal mussel beds along Goa,Karnataka and Kerala coast duringSeptember to December 2016. In theintertidal mussel beds off Karnataka, theonset of spatfall was noticed fromSeptember, 2016. The average size ofthe mussel spat was 8.7 mm. Mussel spatsettlement was also observed extensivelyon oyster shells and sandy substratumnear bar mouths and estuaries along theKarnataka coast. Large scale settlementof the spat of brown mussel Perna indicawas observed along Vizhinjam coast fromAugust 2016 and they grew to seed size(35-40 mm) by October. Similar spatsettlement was observed at Perumathurain Kerala and Kadiyapattanam andEnayam in Tamil Nadu. Along with brownmussel spat, stray numbers of greenmussel spat was also observed in theseplaces. Spat settlement was alsoobserved on ropes suspended from raftsat Vizhinjam harbour.

Continued adoption of sea cage farming Technology

The fishermen Self Help Group fromMunaikadu engaged in integrated

seaweed and cobia farming continued theadoption of the farming with their owninvestment during 2016. Hatcheryproduced cobia fingerlings supplied bythe ICAR-CMFRI, Mandapam stocked intwo GI cages of 6 meter diameter and3.5 meter depth during first week of May2016 were reared with technicalguidance and support from the scientists.After 195 days of culture 2.2 tonnes (t)of cobia were harvested on 24th

November 2016. Each fish having anaverage weight of 2 kg was sold at farmgate price of ` 225 per kg and a grossrevenue of ` 4,90,500/- was realized.The operating (cost: benefit) ratio was0.53, indicating 47 % profit due to thefarming.

Recommendations to resolve the crisisin mussel farming in Kerala

The mussel farming sector of PadannaBackwaters (Kasaragod District) was

confronted with several problems since2014-15. The scientific team from ICAR-CMFRI monitoring the mussel farmingactivity in the area, set up a task force toidentify the issues and suggest solutions tofarmers and the Government. The resultsof the in situ experiments conducted bythe institute was analysed and the draftreport was presented to Kerala StateFisheries officials in a meeting organisedby the Deputy Director of Fisheries,Kasaragod, on 14th October, 2016.

Following this, the report“Recommendations to resolve the crisisin mussel farming in Padanna Backwaters,

Kasaragod, Kerala” was presented at the‘Mussel farmer’s and agent’s awarenessprogramme’ at Cheruvathur, Kasaragod,on 15th October, 2016. In this meetaround 200 farmers and agents fromKasaragod, Kanhangad and ValiyaparambaPanchayats participated and interactedwith the scientists, state fisheries officialsand local Panchayat officials. Among the21 recommendations proposed by thetask force to tackle these challenges arethe adoption of sustainable aquaculturepractices in Padanna Backwaters byimproving the quality of seeds, enhancingthe flushing rates, modifying the farmlayout and reducing the farming densityper unit area.

Emerging clam fishery at Chirayinkeezhu in Kerala

Nearly 400-500 people including 50-60 women from Perunkuzhi,

Madam Palam and Aroor area ofChirayankeezhu in Thiruvananthapuramdistrict are involved in clam (Paphiamalabarica and Meretrix casta) fishery that

began in 2016 due to the increasedmarket demand. Nearly 90% of theclams are harvested by hand picking fromthe near shore area. From deeper watersthese clams are harvested by groups of2-3 fishermen each using hand dredges,

working in wooden canoes from earlymorning till evening. Harvested clamspacked in gunny bags are sent to cities inKerala, Goa and Karnataka.

Bulk sale of marine ornamental fish

The Mandapam Regional Centrehas been consistently successful in

the breeding and seed production of

marine ornamental fishes for more thana decade. Recently the centre hassuccessfully raised hybrid clown fishes or

designer clowns and the protocols forlarval rearing and fingerling productionhave been standardised. The designerclowns such as Picasso, platinum,snowflake, etc are highly sought-aftervarieties in the domestic as well asinternational markets. These are beingsold to hobbyists or traders at nominalrates fixed by the institute. The recentbulk sale of percula clown, tomato clown,maroon clown and designer clowns to atrader in Chennai, fetched revenue of` 1,62,500 which was deposited in ICARaccount. This is the first time that such abulk sale of marine ornamental fishes isreported from any R & D institute in India.

A two-day national workshop cumtraining on Digital Library

Management was held at ICAR-CMFRIorganized by its Library andDocumentation Centre. Inaugurating theworkshop, Dr. A. Ramachandran, ViceChancellor, Kerala University of Fisheriesand Ocean Studies (KUFOS) said thelibrary professionals must be well trainedwith the latest information managementtechnologies in order to extend theefficacy of the digital library system to theusers. The development in informationtechnology has revolutionized theconcept of library and digitization ofinformation has made the researchactivities easier and effective. Dr.Ramachandran also inauguratedD-Space@CMFRI, a digital archive ofinformation related to the institute. In hispresidential address, Dr. AGopalakrishnan, Director, ICAR-CMFRIsaid its library would be made theinformation gateway in the field of fisheriesand marine science in the country. Cyclone Vardah impacts fisheries sector in Tamil Nadu

Disastrous Vardah Cyclone struckChennai, Kancheepuram and

Thiruvallur coastal districts on 12th

December and affected nearly 25000fisher families. Wind speed of 140 kmper hour and huge tidal waves inundatedthe low lying areas of coastal villagescausing heavy damage and impacted theirnormal life. The Tamil Nadu FisheriesDepartment reported loss of lives of 10

fishers with only 3 bodies recovered.The cyclone badly damaged mechanisedand motorised fishing boats, gears,engines and catamarans in coastal villagesand landing centres. Fishers at Kasimedutold unexpected changes in winddirection ended up in heavy loss for allthe fishers as boats couldn't escape thefury of the cyclone and several weredamaged beyond repair. Total economic

loss due to Vardha Cyclone in Chennai,Kancheepuram and Thiruvallur coastaldistricts was estimated to be ` 32.5crores. The state's Fisheries Departmentworked round the clock and paid reliefamount to the fishers based on theassessment of damages.

Lab facilities at Kovalam Field Lab affected by Cyclone VardahThe strong winds during cyclone

Vardah damaged the roof ofsedimentation /filter unit and algal culturefacilities in the Kovalam Field Lab. Severaldoors and window panes and sea waterpump installations were damaged. Thepower was restored after ten days. Theanimal stock and the larval stock has beensustained with lot of efforts. The cagesunder TSP installed at Pulicat were notdirectly affected although the villageinfrastructure was badly damaged, withseveral houses flooded and fishing boatsdamaged.

Climate Change & Fisheries: ICAR-CMFRI submits CountryStatus Report to SAARC

The Country Status Report (CSR)about the impact of climate change

on coastal fisheries and aquaculturesector in India was presented in a meetingbetween SAARC Agriculture Centre(SAC) and representatives from SAARCnations during a video conferenceconvened by the Dhaka headquarteredSAC.

A 3-member team headed by CMFRIDirector Dr. A. Gopalakrishnanrepresented India in the conference. Theteam India presented the report whichincluded the details of issues andchallenges being developed owing to theclimate change in the coastal fisheries andaquaculture sector in India. Dr. P. U.Zacharia, Project Coordinator ofNational Innovations on Climate ResilientAquaculture (NICRA) and Dr. GrinsonGeorge, Senior Scientist were the othermembers of the CMFRI team whoprepared the CSR which exposeddisruptions being occurred due to theclimate change in areas such as marineecosystem, fish stock, harvesting sector,aquaculture, market and trade etc. Thepresent condition of fishing communitieswas also included in the report. Duringthe conference member countriesreviewed the remedial steps to be taken

to mitigate the impact of climate changeon fisheries and aquaculture, and finaliseda set of recommendations to be followedby the member countries in future. Themeeting prioritised, in therecommendations, developingcollaborative and comprehensive effortsto address climate vulnerabilities andcommissioning of SAARC level task-forceto formulate strategies to mitigate climatechange impacts. Conduct of awarenessprogrammes on reducing greenhousegas emissions and expansion of open seacage farming and pen culture in coastalwater bodies were also listed as themajor recommendations. Othernoteworthy recommendations finalisedduring the meeting include, introductionof saline/ temperature tolerant and fast-growing fish species for coastalaquaculture; establishment of fishsanctuary for improvement of naturalstocks; setting up common gene bank forvulnerable species; development ofalternate energy and fuel sources forinland and marine capture fisheries;utilisation and e-commerce ventures andInformation Communication Technology(ICT) for social and livelihood security offishers and fish farmers; framing ofwetland conservation policies to manage

coastal ecosystem; community basedcoastal f isheries and aquaculturemanagement; upgrading andmodernizing the fishing industry relatedinfrastructure and setting standards forfishing practices; human resourcedevelopment through education, trainingand exchange programmes, supportingmember countries including visits, projectsupport and resource sharing;development of ecologically sensitivehabitats such as mangroves, corals andwetlands; farming of potential carbonsequestering species such as seaweedsand Integrated Multi-trophic Aquaculture(IMTA) and development of low cost fishfarming technologies in tune with climatevariability.

One dead bottlenose dolphin(Tursiops truncatus) was found

washed ashore near Digabarini khunti ofPuri coast on 5th November 2016. Injurymarks were found near the snout andthe flippers. The female dolphin weighedapproximately 80 kg. It was taken by theWildlife Department of Puri and buriedafter post mortem by its Veterinarysurgeon. The dolphin was dark blue withwhite in the posterior portion. Inshoreand offshore individuals vary in colour and

Bottlenose dolphin washed ashore on Puri coastsize with former being smaller in size andlighter in colour. Dolphins move in groupsparticularly during October and

November months off Puri coast.

Mapping of natural seed resources and mariculture sites

Under All India Network Project onMariculture, a study was carried out

on the availabil ity of natural seedresources, along the Kali estuary ofKarwar. Weekly castnet surveys during2015-16 using cast nets and datacollection from local fishermen on dailybasis was done. Based on data collectedmost dominant fish seeds available arecarangids, snappers and mullets and ofthe 24 prioritised species, 8 species areavailable in Kali estuary. Dominant speciesidentif ied were Caranx ignobilis,Sil lago sihama, Lutjanus johnii,

L. argentimaculatus, Mugil cephalus,Lethrinus lentjan, Psettodes erumei andEpinephelus coioides. Highest abundanceof C. ignobilis was recorded in Sunkeriwhile seeds of snapper were abundantin Halga. Abundance of snapper seed wasmore in areas where the salinity rangedbetween 12-20 ppt. Carangids andmullets were found abundant in all theseasons. CPUE(numbers per haul) ofcarangids and snappers was1800 and700 respectively. Potential sites identifiedwere Nandangadda, Sunkeri, Kadwad,Siddar, Kinner, Halga, Majali, Devbagh.

Out of the eight sites identified, three sitesviz., Halga, Kanasgiri and Sunkeri werefound potential for snapper fish seedresources. Gerres limbatus, Gerresfilamentosus, Etroplus suratensis andScatophagus argus were found to be themost abundant among non-prioritisedspecies.

Four Indigenously designed HDPEcages with 10m diameter have also beeninstalled at marine farming sites of Karwaron 7th November, 2016.

in Kerala, a two-month trainingprogramme for skill enhancement andcapacity development of fisher youth,'Theeranaipunya' was launched. Theprogramme was organized with thesupport of the Society for Assistance tothe Fisherwomen (SAF), functioning underthe Fisheries Department. C. R.Satyavathi, Executive Director, SAFinaugurated the training programme whichfocuses on skill development and impartingon job training to the girls from the fishingcommunity. Dr. Vipin Kumar and Dr. V.Kripa ICAR-CMFRI spoke at the inauguralfunction. Around 70 faculty memberswithin and outside the institute took classeson various topics. Yoga practices andcultural programmes were also scheduled

as part of the training programme. Thefirst phase of 'Theeranaipunya' conductedduring the period February-April this year

Training Programme on 'Marine SeaCage Farming' for the fishers and

fisheries officials under FIMSUL-II projectof State Fisheries Department, TamilNadu was held in three batches at theMandapam Regional Centre. Eight fishers

and one Inspector of Fisheries attendedthe training for Kanyakumari districtconducted during 20th-22th September2016. For Pudukottai district, 17 fishersand two Inspectors of Fisheriesparticipated in the programme, held in

two batches. The training forRamanathapuram district was conductedduring 1st-3rd November 2016, in which12 fishers and one Inspector of Fisheriestook part. There were 19 fishers and oneInspector of Fisheries in the training forKancheepuram district held during 22nd-24th November 2016.The participantswere given hands-on training on cagefarming, feeding, cage and net fabrication,net exchange, and disease management.Besides, they were appraised with latestinformation on broodstock developmentand seed production technologies ofmarine finfishes and ornamental fishes.Field visits were also arranged to sea cagefarm at Mandapam and a seaweed farmat Munaikadu. University of Florida, USA delivered alecture on 'Reef Biodiversity: the InsideStory' at Headquarters . Dr. Gustav, whohas specialized in reef biodiversityresearch and is also an editor ofWORMS, the world's largest onlinedatabse for taxonomy marine species,urged the scientific community toparticipate in developing online databaseof the marine biodiversity, helpinginterested stakeholders get access to theinformation of the nation's resources. Hevisited the National Marine BiodiversityMuseum at ICAR-CMFRI which is

designated as the NationalRepository by theGovernment of India andappreciated its showcasing ofvarieties of marine speciesregarded as the largest of itskind in the country. DirectorDr. A. Swachhta Pakhwada

Cleanliness drive at Headquarters and Centres

As part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan,the institute observed Swachhta

Pakhwada, a 14-day cleanliness drive, atheadquarters in Kochi and its variousresearch and field centres in the country.It commenced on Gandhi Jayanthi andculminated on the Rastriya Ekta Divas (31st

October) with activities implemented atICAR-CMFRI Headquarters and its tenregional/ research centres. At HQ, Dr. A.Gopalakrishnan, Director, administeredthe ‘Swachhata Pledge’ to all staff with thecommittement to make self, community,

society, villages and cities clean and strivetowards taking the nation into theexemplary list of the Clean Countries inthe world. The programmes conductedranged from cleaning the public utility areaslike harbour, hospitals, schools, parks,beaches, bus shelters, boat jetties, publicwalkways, playgrounds; cleaning the officepremises; to planting trees, vegetablegardening, setting up of biowaste utilizationplants besides creating awareness amongpublic by conducting various competitionsin this connection, Awareness in Yoga;health, positive thinking and waterconservation etc, was generated by specialprogrammes. Involvement of VIPs in theinstitute’s Swachhta Awarenessprogrammes was also done. Some of themajor events included human chain onawareness, cleaning beaches, developingproducts and processes leading to betterwaste disposal / reduction. A talk onEnvironment and Development : Role ofindividuals and society on 20th October,2016 by Mr. C. R. Neelakantan, noted

environment activist and lecture by Mr.Sarvesh Shashi, Chief Executive Officer,Zorba - A Renaissance Studio, Chennaipopularising yoga on 28th October, 2016was arranged at Headquarters. One of thehallmarks of the Pakhwada has beendeveloping fruitful linkages with the civicsocieties and other government agenciesin partnering with them for futureinitiatives. Daily Reporting which featuredin dailies as well as official websitesincluding that of the ICAR was also ahighlight.

The Krishi Vigyan Kendra Ernakulamof ICAR-CMFRI introduced an Aqua

Task Force named Kadamakudy MalsyaKarma Sena on 21st November 2016 tohelp boost fish culture. The task force,comprising a group of youngsters trainedby the KVK, was launched by Dr. A.Gopalakrishnan, Director, ICAR-CMFRI ata function held on Pizhala Island, as partof the World Fisheries Day celebration.Under the technical guidance of expertsfrom the KVK, the young people in theAqua Task Force will undertake variousworks to assist fish farmers on paymentbasis. They are able to help farmers inareas such as farm design, cage fabrication,cleaning, pond preparation, seed sourcing,quality control, feed selection etc. KVK willassist the task force in making projectreports to avail bank loans for aquacultureprojects. IUCN Groupers and Wrasses SpecialistGroup (GWSG) meeting in the Azores,Portugal in November 2016 to assess theextinction risk of 164 species of this groupglobally. The Azores workshop, supportedby the IUCN Biodiversity Unit staff, is keybecause Red List re-assessments must becompleted at least once every ten years.Dr. Rekha Nair an IUCN Specialist Groupmember was one among the 35 expertsfrom 13 countries who gathered in theAzores. Revisiting species status ofgroupers such as Spinycheek Grouper,Longspine Grouper, Malabar grouper,Orange Grouper etc. is significant becauseof the growing exploitation pressure onthis group of fishes which is a source of
