  • FOREWORD

    The final report on the characteristics of the population and housing based the 2010 Census of Population and Housing (CPH) are divided into two parts. The first part is the 2010 CPH Report No. 2A (Non-Sample Variables). Report No. 2A shows the demographic and housing statistics that were generated based on the data items collected from all households using CPH Form 2 (Common Household Questionnaire) and CPH Form 3 (Sample Household Questionnaire). It provides data on the characteristics of the population and their housing units at the national, regional, provincial, and city/municipality levels.

    The second part is the 2010 CPH Report No. 2B. This report contains

    population and household statistics generated based on 20-percent sample households enumerated using CPH Form 3 only. The data in this report are presented at the national, provincial, and city/municipality levels.

    The NSO extends its deep appreciation for the support of the Department

    of Education whose personnel served as enumerators and supervisors during field enumeration. We are also thankful to the NSO personnel who served as census supervisors and to the hired personnel who served as census enumerators and supervisors. We acknowledge the dedication and hardwork they demonstrated throughout the enumeration period.     LANAO DEL NORTE Highlights on Population and Household Characteristics Literacy rate of Lanao del Norte was recorded at 93.8 percent According to the 2010 Census of Population and Housing (CPH), there were approximately 443 thousand persons aged 10 years or older in Lanao del Norte (excluding Iligan City) in 2010. They comprised 72.9 percent of the 607 thousand household population in the province. Among the population 10 years old and over, 415 thousand persons or 93.8 percent were literate. In comparison, in the 2000 CPH, the literacy rate was recorded at 85.0 percent. In the 2000 CPH and 2010 CPH, a person is considered literate if he/she is able to read and write a simple message in any language or dialect. The literacy rate among females aged 10 years and over in 2010 was 94.1 percent. This is higher than the literacy rate for males of the same age which was 93.5 percent. School attendance was higher among females than males The province had a total of 280 thousand persons aged 5 to 24 years. This population group comprised 46.2 percent of the 607 thousand household population in Lanao del Norte. Of the household population 5 to 24 years old, 172 thousand persons or 61.3 percent attended school at anytime from June 2009 to March 2010. Females comprised 50.3 percent of those who attended school at anytime during the said school year.

    School attendance was higher among females than males. Among females aged 5 to 24 years old, 62.3 percent attended school during the school year 2009-2010 while 60.3 percent of all males aged 5 to 24 years old attended school in the same school year.

    Among those who attended school, 7.5 percent went to school located outside the city or municipality where they were residing at the time of the census. The rest attended schools located within the city or municipality of their residence. Three in every four persons who engaged in a gainful activity were males In Lanao del Norte, 52.3 percent of the 366 thousand household population 15 years old and over were engaged in a gainful activity during the past 12 months preceding the census.     percent of the population who were engaged in a gainful activity while females accounted for 24.5 percent. Among the various major occupation groups, farmers, forestry workers, and fishermen comprised the largest group. There were 38.7 percent of persons with a gainful activity who belonged to this occupation group. Laborers and unskilled workers made up the second largest group with 31.1 percent share of the total number of persons with a gainful activity. Officials of government and special interest organizations, corporate executives, managers, managing proprietors, and supervisors made up the third largest group with 8.5 percent share. Six in 10 persons with a gainful activity were in the agriculture, forestry, and fishing industry Persons with a gainful activity in agriculture, forestry, and fishing industry comprised 63.9 percent of the total persons aged 15 years old and over with a gainful activity. Those in the wholesale and retail trade; and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles accounted for 10.8 percent, and those in the transportation and storage industry made up 6.6 percent. Two in five persons with a gainful activity was a self-employed without any paid employee Forty-three percent of the population with a gainful activity were self-employed without any paid employee, 31.3 percent worked for private business/enterprise/farm, and 6.7 percent worked for government/government corporation. The rest worked with or without any pay in own family-operated farm or business (12.0 percent), employer in own farm or business (4.0 percent), and worked for private household (domestic services) (3.1 percent). Seven in every 100 persons with a gainful activity worked outside their city or municipality of residence Persons with a gainful activity during the 12 months preceding the census who worked outside their city or municipality of residence accounted for 7.3 percent of the total population with a gainful activity during the same period. The place of work for the majority (92.6 percent) was within the city or municipality where they resided at the time of the census. Ever-married women aged 45 to 49 had an average of 4.3 children The province of Lanao del Norte had about 96 thousand ever-married women (EMW) aged 15 to 49 years according to the 2010 CPH. These women have borne 3.2 children each, on average. As expected, EMW above 40 years of age had much higher mean children ever born (CEB) than younger women. Women in Lanao del Norte would have 4.3 children, on average, by the time they reach the end of their childbearing. Children ever born alive to EMW aged 15 to 49 years as of 2010 included children born alive but no longer surviving, children still living who may be residing with the household or living elsewhere at the time of the census. The count of the CEB included those born to women during their present marriage, during their previous marriage, and those born outside of marriage.

    Median age at first marriage among ever-married women aged 15 to 49 years was 20.3 years The median age at first marriage for women of child-bearing age (15 to 49 years old) in the province was 20.3 years. The age at first marriage is the age when the woman first got married or lived in a consensual union. By age group, the median age at first marriage for women aged 15 to 19 years was 17.4 years while for women aged 20 to 24 years, it was 19.2 years. The median age for women aged 25 to 29 years (20.3 years) is lower than for women aged 30 to 34 years (20.7 years). Women in older age groups, that is, 35 to 39 years, 40 to 44 years, and 45 to 49 years had their first marriage when they were 20.9 years, 20.9 years, and 21.3 years, respectively, on average. Seven in 10 households used electricity for lighting In 2010, the province had a total of 123 thousand households. Of these households, 72.7 percent or 89 thousand households used electricity for lighting. Kerosene was used for lighting by 24.2 percent of the households. The other 0.6 percent of the total households used liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and oil for lighting. Wood was popularly used for cooking Wood was the fuel used most of the time for cooking by 86.4 percent of the total households in Lanao del Norte. LPG was the second most commonly used fuel for cooking with 7.8 percent of the total households using it. Other types of fuel used most often by the rest of the households were charcoal (2.3 percent), kerosene (1.8 percent), electricity (1.6 percent), and other fuels.

    The popular source of water for drinking, cooking, and laundry was community water system In 2010, the main source of water for drinking in the province was community water system as reported by 43.5 percent of the total households. These were mostly households using a shared faucet connected to a community water system. They comprised 23.9 percent of the total households. Those using their own faucet which is connected to a community water system comprised 19.6 percent. The rest of the households reported their main source of water for drinking as follows: shared, tubed/piped deep well (17.6 percent); protected spring (11.9 percent); unprotected spring (6.1 percent); own use, tubed/piped deep well (5.8 percent); dug well (5.4 percent); tubed/piped shallow well (4.6 percent); lake, river, rain, and others (3.6 percent); bottled water (1.3 percent); and peddler (0.2 percent). For cooking, the community water system was used mainly by 43.6 percent of the total households in the province. The majority of these households were using shared faucet (23.4 percent of the total households). The other 20.2 percent were using their own faucet, which was not shared with another household. For the rest of the households, the main source of water for cooking were as follows: shared, tubed/piped deep well (17.9 percent); protected spring (11.1 percent); own use, tubed/piped deep well (6.2 percent); unprotected spring (6.0 percent); dug well (5.8 percent); lake, river, rain, and others (4.6 percent); tubed/piped shallow well (4.5 percent); peddler and bottled water (0.1 percent each). For laundry/bathing, there were 37.0 percent of the total households who reported the community water system as their source of water. The rest of the households reported shared, tubed/piped deep well (16.9 percent), lake, river, rain, and others (16.1 percent), protected spring (8.1 percent), dug well (6.9 percent), own use, tubed/piped deep well (6.4 percent), unprotected spring (4.3 percent), tubed/piped shallow well (4.3 percent), and peddler (0.1 percent). Garbage disposal by half of the households was by burning their garbage Households were asked about how they usually dispose their kitchen garbage such as leftover food, peeling of fruits and vegetables, fish and chicken entrails. In Lanao del Norte, 49.5 percent of the 123 thousand households disposed garbage by burning. There were 22.9 percent of the households who dumped their garbage in pit but not burned, 10.7 percent disposed garbage through garbage truck collection, 10.2 percent allowed their garbage to compost, 4.8 percent buried their garbage, 1.2 percent used garbage as feeds for animals, and 0.7 percent disposed garbage through other means (such as throwing them in esteros, vacant lots, rivers, and others).

    Three in four households had a sanitary toilet Three-fourths or 75.8 percent of the households in Lanao del Norte had sanitary toilets. Sanitary toilet refers to flush toilet, either owned or shared, and closed pit type of toilet facility. The rest of the households used open pit (13.2 percent) and other types of toilet facility (1.7 percent) while 9.3 percent reported to have no toilet facility. One in every two households had cellular phone In 2010 CPH, households were asked if they had household conveniences/devices in working condition. About 80.0 percent (or 98 thousand) of the households in Lanao del Norte reported to have at least one type of household convenience/device. Of the total households, 56.1 percent had cellular phone. There were 54.5 percent who had radio/radio cassette, 53.2 percent who had television set, 35.2 percent had CD/DVD/VCD player, 22.1 percent had refrigerator/freezer, 13.4 percent had motorcycle/tricycle, 11.4 percent had component/stereo set, 7.7 percent had washing machine, 7.6 percent had cooking range, 3.8 percent had car/jeep/van, 3.6 percent had personal computer, 3.0 percent had motorized boat/banca, and 1.7 percent had landline/wireless telephone. Five percent of the total households in the province had an internet access Data on the household’s internet access was collected for the first time in the 2010 CPH. Households were asked whether they have access to internet at home and/or from elsewhere. An internet access elsewhere refers to the internet access of any member of the household in the office, school, internet café, among others.

    In Lanao del Norte, only 1.4 percent of households had internet access at home. Households with internet access from elsewhere comprised 4.3 percent of the total households. Overall, households who had internet access from home and/or from elsewhere made up 4.9 percent of the total households. One in four households owned agricultural lands acquired through other means In Lanao del Norte, only 1.0 percent owned agricultural lands acquired through CARP, as agrarian reform beneficiaries. Households who owned agricultural lands acquired through other means comprised 25.7 percent. Households who owned residential lands other than the lot they occupy accounted for 9.2 percent. Those who owned other types of land comprised 3.4 percent. Overall, there were 41 thousand households comprising 33.7 percent of the total households in the province who owned a residential land other than the land they occupy, agricultural land or any other type of land. Two in every five households reported Bisaya/Binisaya as their language spoken at home Of the total number of households in Lanao del Norte in 2010, 39.6 percent reported Bisaya/Binisaya as the language generally spoken at home. There were 36.3 percent of the total households who reported Maranao as their language spoken at home. The rest of the households were reported to speak these languages: Cebuano (23.2 percent), Hiligaynon/Ilonggo (0.2 percent), Iranon/Iranun/Iraynon and Boholano (0.1 percent each), and others. Majority of the households lived in housing units they owned or amortized In 2010, the province had 83.4 percent of the total 123 thousand households who owned or amortized the housing unit they occupied. The corresponding figure in 2000 was 72.4 percent of the total 90 thousand households. Moreover, 13.7 percent of the households were occupying their housing units rent-free but with consent of the owner while 0.8 percent were occupying housing units rent-free but without consent of the owner. The remaining 1.7 percent of the households or about 2,100 households in the province rented the housing units they occupied. Households with monthly rental of P500 or less accounted for 54.0 percent of the total households who rented the housing units they occupied. Households with monthly rental ranging from P501 to P1,000 made up 16.6 percent. Households with monthly rental from P1,001 to P1,500 comprised 10.9 percent, households with monthly rental from P1,501 to P2,000 accounted for 4.6 percent, and households with monthly rental from P2,001 to P4,000 had a share of 7.0 percent. The rest of the households rented their housing units at more than P4,000 per month. Four in every five households purchased the housing unit they occupied Among the 102 thousand households who owned or amortized the housing unit they occupied, 81.9 percent reported that their housing unit was purchased, 15.6 percent reported that it was inherited, 1.4 percent reported their housing unit was received as a gift, and less than 0.1 percent reported that it was acquired as a company benefit. Of those households who purchased their housing unit, 95.6 percent used their own resources or interest-free loans from relatives/friends in purchasing it. The rest of the households purchased their housing unit through loan with interest from private persons (2.4 percent); government assistance through NHA, Pag-ibig, GSIS, SSS, DBP, and others (1.8 percent); private banks, foundations, cooperatives (0.7 percent); employer assistance (0.4 percent); and others.
