By KATE BRANSFIELD

Now that Thanksgiving andthe holiday season is upon

us, I can’t help but reflect on whatI’m thankful for.

I am truly grateful that my realestate business has flourished tothe point that it enables me tosponsor wonderful and worthycauses.

In the decades that I havelived and run my business inSanta Monica, I’ve come torealize that it takes giving back tomake a community truly special.

Whether it’s my support forthe Santa Monica Boys & GirlsClubs and their recent auctionand dinner that raised $500,000or throwing out the first pitch onopening day for the SantaMonica Little League,

I’m proud to help. Also key to a thriving

community are our publicschools.

We’re blessed to have Franklinand Roosevelt elementaryschools and Lincoln MiddleSchool right in our back yard togive our kids the best educationpossible.

Santa Monica schools areconsistently ranked among the best in the state, anaccomplishment that doesn’t go without notice.

So, when you’re sitting with your family and friendsbreaking bread for the holiday, take time to tell each otherexactly what you’re thankful for. It’s become a tradition in my home and I hope it becomes one for you.

The holidays are here again and nowhereis that more apparent than

Montana Avenue, where locals are preparingto hold our annual Montana Avenue HolidayWalk on Dec. 6.

Storeowners in one of Santa Monica’sunique shopping districts are wrappingpresents and striking up the bands to makethis year’s walk the most fun and festive yet.

Stop by my office at 1608 Montana Ave.to get a picture with Santa; and don’t forgetto tell him your wish list.

Between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m., familiesstroll the avenue from Sixth Street to 17th Street enjoying live music, specialevents and lovely snacks and libations asbusinesses throw open their doors. People stop, shop and mostly mingle withneighbors they may not have seen since theArt Walk, another signature MontanaAvenue event held in July.

It also gives businesses the opportunityto introduce themselves to the community ina way that’s not all about making a sale.

Merchants do more than just host aparty for their neighbors — they drop theirprices, too. Many local shops will providediscounts on certain items, one more way tomake the holidays a bit easier on theirpatrons and their wallets.

Those sales are a relatively new featureof the walk which has a decades-long historyon the street and the idea is to extend awarm “thank you” to the customers thatsupport the businesses of their friends andneighbors.

However, the real beauty of the night liesnot in the shopping, but in the effort tobring the Santa Monica community togetherfor a fun, family-friendly evening that kicksoff the holiday season in style.
