CLOUDX™ CONNECTIVITY: MANAGED CLOUD

A multi-cloud strategy enables organizations to match the strengths of various cloud services to workload requirements and improve the experience of users throughout the extended enterprise. The right cloud in the right place can provide significant performance and reliability benefits while avoiding vendor lock-in and meeting data sovereignty requirements.

However, multi-cloud adoption creates a complex environment with significant operational challenges. In particular, IT teams must determine the best connectivity options to meet business, application and financial requirements. Traditional wide-area network (WAN) technologies — including broadband Internet, private WAN services and software-defined WAN (SD-WAN) — bring tradeoffs when it comes to efficient cloud access. Many organizations experience WAN bandwidth and latency issues as cloud workloads and data volumes increase.

Pivot’s Managed Cloud Exchange (MCE) service, the foundational service of the Cloudx Connectivity suite, provides fully managed connectivity with dedicated bandwidth and advanced security. The MCE service leverages the Equinix data center interconnect (DCI) fabric, coupled with Pivot managed network utility services, to improve access to cloud service providers and other business partners. It enables organizations to reduce WAN costs while improving performance, security and the user experience by moving network functions, data and analytics closer to the WAN and cloud edge.

GREATER PERFORMANCE, SECURITY & FLEXIBILITY Broadband Internet connections are the default connection for public cloud services. Compared to traditional private WAN connections, which come with high costs, long lead times and minimal flexibility, Internet services are inexpensive and provide near-instant, anywhere access. However, the Internet does not guarantee performance, suffers from inconsistent throughput and latency, and is less secure than private WAN connections.

DCIs have emerged to provide high-speed connectivity and a simple yet dynamic architecture for linking locations, applications and data sources. Service providers and many large enterprises use DCIs to connect their own data centers. However, interconnection also enables direct, private access to virtually any organization — from cloud service providers to strategic partners — without traversing the public Internet. This approach allows companies to boost application performance, reduce latency, increase security, and improve network control and visibility.

The use of private interconnection is growing rapidly as organizations become increasingly dependent on the cloud and a digital ecosystem of business partners. According to the Global Interconnection Index, the capacity of private interconnect services is growing at nearly twice the rate of the public Internet and is expected to comprise nearly six times the volume of global IP traffic by 2020.

INDUSTRY-LEADING DCI FABRIC

The Equinix Cloud Exchange (ECX) Fabric is an advanced interconnection solution that establishes direct physical and virtual connections between ECX Fabric locations and Equinix International Business Exchange (IBX) data centers around the world.

CLOUDx™ PARTNERSHIP

Developed in partnership with Equinix, the MCE solution combines the ECX Fabric with Pivot’s managed network utility service. It centralizes the customer’s WAN connectivity, aggregating all links between cloud service providers and other vendors and partners, with consistent throughput, security and high availability. It also enables the development of a custom virtualized network and security performance hub. Pivot’s relationship with Equinix and knowledge of the ECX platform allows the implementation of flexible and dynamic virtual connections with reduced provisioning times.

The ECX Fabric leverages software-defined networking (SDN) capabilities to enable dynamic connections to some of the world’s largest Software-as-a-Service and cloud infrastructure providers.

The ECX Fabric enables organizations to better leverage network service provider on-ramps to establish multi-cloud and hybrid cloud architectures that are geo-redundant for improved performance and availability. Organizations can also create the distributed points of presence essential to today’s demanding applications and big data use cases, bypassing the public Internet for enhanced security.

However, the ECX Fabric is more than a platform for cloud connectivity. The inter-metro integration of Equinix locations enables the interconnection of all customers, partners and suppliers on the Equinix global platform. Organizations can reach their entire digital ecosystem through one private and secure connection.

FULL-SERVICE SOLUTION

The solution also leverages Pivot’s experience and management tools to create a full-service offering. Pivot’s consulting and professional services include the design and implementation of an interconnect architecture that reduces WAN costs, optimizes traffic flows, and improves performance by bringing applications and data closer to the end-user. Pivot consultants can also assist with redesign of the WAN architecture, and map out network and security considerations critical to adoption of hybrid and multi-cloud environments. In addition, the MCE service enables customers to outsource the management of the WAN to a partner with proven expertise in managed network services and cloud service provider connectivity.
