A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents: We have had a wonderful first week of school. Teaching and learning started on the first day. But, we have also spent a lot of time this week in homeroom on beginning of school activities. Each counselor has visited with their students in homeroom, each class has had an Opening of School Assembly where we reviewed the main school rules, introduced them the Student Council leaders, and gave them some upcoming dates of events for their calendar. The 9th graders have spent a lot of time learning about Providence, taking a school tour, and settling into their new role as a high school student. I’m so proud of how the week has gone and how excited the students and staff seem to be. Of major emphasis this week has been the concept of “One Providence” or OneProv. This is our focus for the year! Our school is a diverse community of 2,000 students. But whether students are in the band, athletics, automotive class, or AP European History, we are all part of OneProv, where we support and encourage each other. You'll hear a lot about the OneProv community building initiative this year. We started with the grade level assembly this week for students and we gave each student a sticker for their water bottle, laptop, or even car, to remind us that every day we are part of one big school community. At the end of last year, I shared the concept of OneProv with some of our seniors and they put together a wonderful video capturing this concept perfectly. We shared this video with students in their grade level assembly (and they applauded) and I wanted to share it with our parent community as well. Here is the link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1WFrGOtiVlbtQHVeOQbKfxoaQ4eLbtnqd/view?usp=sharing I hope your child has had a great week and is off to a good start. Don’t forget we have home football tonight against Myers Park. Dress in neon and come out to support our football players, cheerleaders, and marching band. Have a wonderful Labor Day weekend. Sincerely, Dr. Harrill

ANNOUNCEMENTS AND UPCOMING EVENTS

New - Hearing Screening Notice Upon request, the speech-language pathologist will conduct hearing screenings on any student suspected of having hearing problems. A hearing screening can be requested by a parent, teacher or student. These screenings will identify students with a recently acquired hearing loss, and those new to CMS with an existing hearing loss. If a student fails two consecutive hearing screenings with the speech-language pathologist, they will be referred to the school audiologist for a free hearing evaluation. Parents must sign a "Consent for Hearing Evaluation" form prior to student contact with the audiologist. All questions regarding hearing screening procedures can be emailed to the speech-language pathologist at: [email protected].

Presidential Volunteer Service Award (PVSA) All registered Providence High School students have until March 13, 2019 to accrue volunteer hours for this school year’s award!

If you are unsure if your activities will qualify for the award, please see also: https://providencehighptso.weebly.com/presidents-volunteer-service-awards.html

Do not wait until last minute to gather the required signatures and documentation to apply for this award; incomplete applications will not be accepted.

Each date of service/hours served per day must be listed as a separate line item, even for recurring activities.

If you have any questions about the PVSA, please email Amy Choffin at [email protected] or Jana Emerick at [email protected]. Giving back to the community is a wonderful way to understand the power that each person has to make a difference in our world. An added bonus to volunteering is that participating in programs like the PVSA may also look good on a college resume. (Submitted 8/13/18 by Amy Choffin, [email protected])

Our Athletic Booster Club supports the needs of the school’s many sports programs. We provide uniforms for the teams, sports equipment, maintenance to the existing facilities and construction of new facilities. Unfortunately, the athletic programs within Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools have been reduced and/or cut due to state and county budgetary constraints. Our job is very important and the need for corporate sponsorships essential. We are specifically targeting a renovation of our current weight room used by all of our student athletes. We need your help in trying to reach our goal of $50,000. Other members of the So Meck 7 have been fortunate to have complete new weight rooms (estimated at $100,000). We need this upgrade in order to level the playing field and put our student athletes in the best possible shape to compete. Over time the weight room has become cramped. This renovation will provide a much safer environment for our teams to get better. Our sponsorship packages include advertising on the scoreboard Jumbotron, football roster cards, and our school booster club website. In addition, banner signage in the stadium and in the gymnasium are available. If you have any questions or would like any additional information, you can contact Pepper Pounds at 704-281-3590 or by e-mail at [email protected]. PHS Athletics Website
