Annual Report 2013-14 1

Dear friends,

It is my distinct privilege to present to you the annual report for the 2013-2014 academic year. Through the extraordinary efforts and dedication of our staff, Corporate Work Study partners, and students, once again, 100% of our seniors were accepted to college. Providence Cristo Rey High School’s success is achieved by continuing to build on, improve on, and fully implement a broad range of initiatives and programs aimed at providing our students with the best platform for success. Just a few notable initiatives include:

• Proactive Risk Prevention Program. This program helps to mitigate the risk factors commonly found among some of our economically disadvantaged students by preemptively addressing challenging issues that often impede their ability to succeed academically. Essential to this process is having on-site professionals to deal with the myriad of social and emotional roadblocks that face our students. The inclusion of the Proactive Risk Prevention Program within the regular school day increased student retention by 30% over the past four years.

• Technology Initiative. Beginning this school year, we have achieved our goal of providing each of our students with their own laptop computer, thereby allowing them to interact directly with teachers from any location while enabling teachers to creatively implement the curriculum, customize delivery of the content, and create a dynamic, student-centered teaching and learning environment.

• Advisory and Afternoon Success. The guiding principle of this program is to ensure students are given the best opportunity to succeed by pairing each student with a faculty advisor who, with the assistance of student support specialists and administrators, provides daily individualized academic counseling and tutorial support. In addition, the staff provides test prep sessions, college application and scholarship workshops, college and career goal setting exercises, resume creation exercises, and Corporate Work Study skills training.

• STEM Program. We have formalized and enhanced our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Program to ensure that our students will not only have a broader path to college, but one that arms them with the skillsets that will prepare them for the changing workplace requirements of the 21st century. The program is led by a veteran chemist educated at University of Illinois, MIT, and USC, accredited in both secondary chemistry and secondary mathematics. A demonstration of our success in this arena this past year was PCRHS winning the overall top prize in the Indianapolis City Robotics Competition against 88 other high Schools in our first year of entry!

While there were many other accomplishments, too numerous to mention, suffice it to say that our students continue to flourish and achieve their high school and collegiate goals. Our Corporate Work Study program continues to expand as we have increased our business partners to 78 this year from 63 while continuing our efforts to make the experience more productive and meaningful for both students and our partners.

It goes without saying, your generous and steadfast support over the years have made these remarkable accomplishments possible. It has been your generous support and belief in our program that has allowed our students to reach their full potential, and for that we and our students, are eternally grateful. Because of you, the dream lives on, so we once again encourage your continued support of Providence Cristo Rey High School.

Thank you,

Joseph P. HeidtPresident

When Jaylan Anderson, 18, walked through the doors of Providence Cristo Rey High School the second semester of his sophomore year, his first thought was: “Where are all the other students?” The biggest change from his former public school was the student to teacher ratio.

In public school, his class sizes were much larger, up to 32 students, than Providence Cristo Rey’s average class size of 19.

It was his mother who encouraged him to attend Providence Cristo Rey. “She’s hard working and a real inspiration to me,” he said.

“My mother wanted me to have the corporate work experience and I’m glad she did. I would encourage everyone to take full advantage of it. It’s helped me get where I am now.”

One of the main reasons he transferred to Providence Cristo Rey was to hone his leadership skills. He became student body president and jumped into his Corporate Work Study position working in IT for Defender Direct. Two days after graduation, he continued employment at Defender Direct while pursuing his degree at Ivy Tech Community College. In addition to his immersion into a corporate environment, Jaylan was introduced to team-building by joining a mission trip made up of his Corporate Work Study colleagues at Defender Direct. He traveled throughout Mexico for four days as a member of Youth with a Mission to build homes for impoverished families. “It taught me about the things we take for granted,” said Anderson.

Family means everything to Jasmine Perez, 19, so knowing that she is one of three siblings connected to Providence Cristo Rey High School is something she holds with high regards. One sister, Lizeth, is a senior and the other, Marisol, is a freshman. A psychology major, minoring in Spanish and business at Marian

University, Perez is the first in her family to attend college.

“I wanted an atmosphere where college was expected of students and they were pushed and guided toward that goal,” said Perez. She continually experienced a supportive and challenging learning environment at Providence Cristo Rey High School.

The most important lesson she learned through her Corporate Work Study experience at NIPSCO and St.Vincent Health was that her efforts truly impacted the organizations. Through her community service at Providence Cristo Rey High School—packing food for families at Gleaners Food Bank—she realized she can make a difference in the lives of others.

“My biggest career goal is that I want to leave something behind that will help others,” said Perez.

In addition to attending school full-time at Marian University, she works in the Admissions Office of Providence Cristo Rey, greeting future students and sharing with families the opportunities available to students.

What does she share with potential students? “I tell prospective students to develop strong work ethics at school and at their Corporate Work Study jobs, manage their time, and to never accept failure.”

Britney Plummer admits that she reluctantly entered Providence Cristo Rey High School in 2007. After attending public high school for a semester, she transferred to Providence Cristo Rey.

“It was one of the best decisions I ever made,” said Plummer, 21, now a student at Indiana State University. With a major in textile, apparel, and merchandising, and a minor in business administration, Plummer has her sights set on owning a public relations fashion firm.

She credits Providence Cristo Rey’s Corporate Work Study experience at BKD, a certified public accounting firm, for her introduction to the business world.

“I learned to become more independent, to take the initiative, to do things on my own, and to have a balance between work and fun,” said Plummer.

Through mentoring opportunities at Providence Cristo Rey, and support from her Corporate Work Study supervisors, Plummer said she was encouraged to pursue not only her undergraduate degree, but also her Master’s Degree. She learned as a Providence Cristo Rey student to “do what you love, not for the money; make connections—you will be surprised at how many people want to help you.”

School Scholarship Tax CreditGreat News for Providence Cristo Rey High School Donors

A School Scholarship Tax Credit is available for individuals and corporations who donated by check, stock/securities, or credit/debit card to scholarship-granting organizations (SGOs) for the purpose of supporting Providence Cristo Rey’s students through funding scholarships, grants, and financial aid to PCRHS students.

The tax credit is equal to 50% of the amount donated and is used to reduce your Indiana state income tax liability. In addition to the direct state tax reduction, you also receive a federal tax deduction for your contribution. The following example illustrates an individual’s after tax (state and federal) cost of a donation assuming a 30% federal income tax bracket:

Learn more or make a gift by visiting www.pcrhs.org and clicking on the “Help Support PCRHS” link.

Donation Amount State Tax Credit Deduction1 Savings 30% Total Tax Savings After Tax Cost 2

$5,000 $2,500 $2,500 $750 $3,250 $1,750

A nonpublic school scholarship provides that a taxpayer may carry forward a school scholarship income tax credit for a taxable year that begins after December 31, 2012 for up to nine years. Consult your tax advisor to verify your ability to utilize the state tax credit and federal tax deduction.

Payment must be made directly to The Institute for Quality Education (SGO). Funds received by The Institute for Quality Education (SGO) from PCRHS donors will be designated for PCRHS students.

1 The net federal deduction is equal to the contribution less the state tax credit as state taxes are deductable for federal income tax purposes.2 Actual after tax cost will vary based on your individual income tax status.

90 PERCENT of our graduates remained enrolled in the college of their choice (as of December 2013)
