Fact Sheet for Wildlife Wednesday
GIRAFFES
Giraffes are the tallest mammals on Earth
A giraffe's neck is too short to reach the ground. Therefore it has to
awkwardly spread its front legs to reach the ground for a drink of water.
Despite being incredibly tall, giraffes still only have seven vertebrae in
their necks – which means a giraffe neck has the exact same number of
bones as a human neck!
The male giraffe is both taller and heavier than the female.
Both male and female have skin-covered knobs, called ossicones,
on the top of their heads. Female ossicones are smaller and have a
small tuft of fur on top, while male ossicones are bald.
Their tongues are black in color to prevent them from getting sun-
burnt.
RHINOS
There are 2 types of rhinos in Africa—The White Rhino and the Black
Rhino. The black rhino has pointed lips , whereas the white rhino has
flat lips. The reason for this is that black rhinos eat fruits and leaves
from twigs and branches. White rhinos graze on grasses.
Rhinos have bad eyesight .
A group of rhinos is called a “Crash of rhinos”
Rhinos have sensitive skin that is roughly 5cm thick.
Rhino horn is used in Traditional Chinese Medicine is believed to treat
fever, rheumatism, gout, and other disorders., but this is NOT the case.
Rhino horns and a human’s fingernails and hair are made up of the same
protein—keratin.
