In the math “world”, we had a busy summer with the 2017 Summer Math Academies throughout the state of Georgia. I was also one of 5 math educators representing Georgia at the 2017 NCTM Leaders’ Affiliate Conference in Baltimore, Maryland in July. Before school started, we spent time in several districts preparing for IKAN and GloSS assessments and progress monitoring, Number Talks, and unit planning. I am continuing to support teachers with MDC lessons, manipulatives, and inquiry. At GCTM, we are gearing up for the 2017 Georgia Math Conference at Rock Eagle October 18-20, 2017. We are looking forward to a great variety of keynote and featured speakers as well as break-out sessions for every grade level. We are also giving away FREE registration to one teacher in each of the 8 regions to allow them to attend the Georgia Math Conference. Please visit the GCTM website, www.gctm.org, and complete the online form. We are also offering a several math trainings at North Georgia RESA. Please visit the website for more details on these trainings.

As I head into my nineteenth year as a Georgia educator, I am excited about being at RESA. For the past seventeen years I worked in the Murray County school district as a teacher and administrator. For the past two years I have also been teaching master’s level education classes online which have kept me updated on all of the new trends in education today. I can truly say that I am blessed to work in a field that I thoroughly enjoy and find very rewarding. I graduated from Lincoln Memorial with my Ed.D. in Executive Leadership in 2012. Prior to my Ed.D.I also received my Ed.S. from LMU, my master’s degree from Piedmont College, and my bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia. GO DAWGS! I have been married to my wife Susanna Bartley James for the past eighteen years and we have two beautiful daughters, Elizabeth and Caitlin. We enjoy spending time with family, traveling, and volunteering at our church and in our community. Again, I am excited about being at RESA and serving our district in School Improvement and as a consultant in the areas of science and social studies. Speaking of science and social studies, coming up in October we will be hosting trainings in both. And both of these trainings will be for elementary, middle, and high school teachers and academic coaches. We will also begin sending out information to districts which shares some great information and links regarding these two academic areas. Above all, don’t forget that there are lots of resources out there and especially on the GADOE website. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can assist you with anything related to these content areas or school improvement. I look forward to working with everyone.

Growing Readers is in full swing! North Georgia Literacy Specialist, Tamara Land attended Gosa’s “Bootcamp for Literacy Specialists” August 1-4 in Macon, Ga. On August 15, Tamara held a leadership orientation for administrators and coaches at North Georgia RESA outlining the nuts and bolts of the program and outlining goals for the coming year. Schools participating in Growing Readers 2017-2019 are: Northwest Elementary School in Murray County; and Mountain View Elementary School, Ellijay Primary and Elementary Schools in Gilmer County. Whitfield County has asked North Georgia RESA to provide Growing Readers training to two new cohorts this year as well as complete year two training for those who have received only one year of training. Tamara, along with Growing Readers

teachers, coaches and administrators, were privileged to be invited to attend a workshop especially for Growing Readers participants with Jennifer Serravallo, author of “Conferring with Readers” and “The Reading Strategies Book” that is the

backbone of much of the Growing Readers work. The workshop will be at Cobb Energy Center on September 19. Growing Readers participants will be deeply engaged in professional learning during September as Tamara conducts 8 days of professional learning throughout our region and at RESA.

It is with great joy and excitement, that I join the NGRESA Team as the School Climate Specialist (SCS). As SCS, my tasks will include insuring that NGRESA supports its school districts in feeling socially, emotionally, and physically safe while fostering respect and commitment among all school members. Much of this will be accomplished through implementation, participation, and sustainability of a Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS) system.Research indicates that schools with a positive climate tend to have higher test scores, increased graduation rates, improved attendance, and reduction in violence and bullying. After spending 28 years in education as both a classroom teacher and an Academic Coach, the idea of assisting schools in emphasizing positivity, accomplishment, and success while promoting supportive relationships between families, schools, and communities is a dream come true for me! Schools with central themes of caring, concern, consistency, cohesiveness, and respect can only move students, parents, and teachers in a forward productive motion.Stay tuned as we continue to study, learn, and train! And remember, always B+.
