Dear Supporters:

I am pleased to provide you with this brief report on Reena’s Outreach, Respite & Enrichment Programs. Reena Foundation is proud to have funded these programs for the past 9 years. We do it because we continually hear from families how important these programs are to Reena’s clients and their families. These programs receive no government funding, so our ability to fund these programs is purely the result of the generosity of donors like you.

This past year was a particularly difficult year for our O, R&E department. Some tough decisions had to be made. Reena charges families using the O, R&E programs a participation fee which partially offsets the costs of the programs. The deficit that is run is then funded by the Foundation via our donors. As the needs of participants have become more and more complex, the cost of providing appropriate professional supervision in these programs has increased. This past year, in order to continue to offer our community families the quality programming their child needs, Reena increased fees even while funding from the Foundation increased.

As the profile of our attendees has become more complex, the average client to supervisor ratio has increased. While our minimum client to supervisor ratio is 1:3, if clients have more complex needs this ratio increases to 1:2 and in some cases 1:1. The popularity of our younger children’s programs and our “Break” programs, each of which requires a higher client to supervisor ratio, also adds to the average cost of providing these programs. We are proud that Reena establishes these standards of care and will not vary from them.

Of course, with increased needs of our clients, Reena expects more and more from its professionals, so the annual cost of training our supervisors continues to increase. We know this too is something that our families have come to expect from Reena.

Last year we reported that Reena ran two pilot programs – the CIT/Work program for teens, and the Tots Summer Camp Program. These pilots were very successful and the need for the programs definitely exists. However, in remaining fiscally responsible, Reena has shelved a potential roll-out of these two programs until a solution is found to make them affordable.

We are proud of the fact that even while other agencies are cancelling their respite programs, Reena has refused to let our families down. None of this development work or this support for almost 700 individuals could have taken place without you, our donor. We hope you will continue to support these programs via your donations – you are creating life-lines.

To read more about the programs specifically, please visit our website at www.reenafoundation.org and visit our Respite Campaign pages.

Thank you for caring.

Yours truly

Gary Sim, PresidentReena Foundation

SINCE 2001

Reena’s Outreach,Respite and EnrichmentPrograms

PROUDLY FUNDING

In 2001, Reena’s Outreach, Respite and Enrichment Programs served 200 families. In 2010, we can proudly say Reena serves almost 700 families completely because of donations. Today, children from 7 years of age and up participate in one of 16 programs offered. Priority is given to families supporting a child at home to ensure they get a break from caring for a child with a developmental disability and that their special needs child receives the life skills and development opportunities they need.

Through these programs, clients have developed life and social skills that allow them to participate in activities and interact with people in a rewarding and enriching way. They have achieved greater independence and have been able to reach their full potential, while becoming active and welcomed members of the community.

Since 2001 Reena Foundation has been committed to fully funding the deficit of O, R&E Programs annually. The deficit after participation fees last year was $540,955. We raise these funds through our Annual Fundraising Campaign, direct mail, special events, general donations, and through grants from family endowment funds.

But raising these funds annually is not enough. As needs and costs rise, we must secure the future of these programs by establishing enough endowment funds to generate the annual cost of operating these programs. Reena Foundation is proud to report that there are 75 Endowment Funds in support of O, R&E Programs. This is a start to securing the financial future of Reena’s O, R&E Programs. Last year, just over $60,000 was granted from endowment funds.
