I am delighted to introduce the University of Exeter’s Primary Enrichment Outreach Programme for Spring 2020. This
prospectus outlines the exciting and comprehensive range of activities that we offer across Key Stage 2, from Years 3 to 6.
Our Outreach Programme was first established in 2007 and in that time we have brought together the knowledge,
expertise and experience of our tutors and lecturers to provide high quality teaching and learning experiences.
Our programme aims to encourage and develop the progression, attainment and aspiration of school-age pupils and is
specifically aimed at engaging pupils who demonstrate a particular interest, skill or potential in a specific subject area.
Our hope is that pupils further their passion and understanding for their subject; feel inspired by practical, hands-on
activities and meet like-minded peers, all within the context of a Higher Education setting.
We look forward to welcoming you!
Our Pupils:
We welcome Key Stage 2 children from all backgrounds, from state education to home schooling, and in particular those
children who demonstrate a particular interest or aptitude for a subject. We are committed to supporting children from
disadvantaged or under-represented groups, and are therefore pleased to offer up to two free places per term to children
from low income or Pupil Premium backgrounds. Please contact us to apply for a place.
Pupil safety:
All members of the Primary Enrichment Outreach team hold an enhanced DBS certificate and all University of Exeter
students participating in events are supervised by a member of our team. All activities held at the university undergo a
risk assessment before they take place, and we have fully trained first aiders on site.

Course Title
Mathematical Games and Strategic Thinking
(This course is back by popular demand! To avoid repeat attendance, please note that it was last taught in Autumn 2018).
Course description
This workshop provides an opportunity for pupils to engage in rich mathematical games from different cultures. The games will draw on pupils’ knowledge and understanding of number and develop their strategic thinking. Pupils will be encouraged to discuss and analyse the games to look for patterns, to make and test hypothesis ,and develop their reasoning and problem solving skills.
The course is ideal for pupils who enjoy mathematical challenges and demonstrate a persistent and analytical approach to problem solving. It is for those who enjoy number and have an interest in strategic games. The workshop is aimed at those pupils who like to know not only the how – but also the why.
This course will encourage pupils to:
discuss and analyse games
hypothesise and test ideas
develop problem solving and reasoning skills
develop strategic thinking
mix appropriately and be challenged by peers with similar abilities
behave in a mature and sensible manner

The Magical World of Number
Course description
Mathematics is all around us, it shapes our World from plants to buildings, from
the minute to the enormous. Throughout history people have been fascinated
by number problems and used mathematics to explain, to predict and, at times,
to bewilder and confuse!
In this workshop we will explore both the beauty and mystery of mathematics.
We will consider aspects of mathematics in nature and explore some ‘magic’
tricks to amaze friends and family.
This course is designed for pupils with a keen interest in mathematics and those
with an inquisitive mind. If you like number puzzles and trying to find out how
and why they ‘work’ then this course is for you. Good mental arithmetic will be
helpful.

Course Title
Curved Stitching: Turn Straight Lines into Curves with the Magic of Maths!
Course description
You will learn how curves can be made from rulers and straight lines. You will use
your knowledge, skills and understanding to create wonderful designs and
patterns based on simple mathematical formulae. You will then use these ideas
to create your own curve stitching to take home.
This course is suitable for pupils with a creative mind and who like visual
patterns. A certain level of dexterity is needed so pupils should be able to thread
a needle unaided.

Course description
Do you like to Game? Do you like to use your imagination? Well this course
could be for you!
During the day you will design your own worlds within Kodu, choose
characters and develop your own games. Like true computer scientists you
will use your logical reasoning skills and build your computational thinking
knowledge.

Appy Tappin! APP Creation
Course description
Do you like APPs? Have you ever wondered how they are developed?
This course will give you the opportunity to develop your understanding and
create your own basic APPs! During the day you will develop your programming
skills by using a text code which is a simplified version of Java Script.
The APPs created will be run using an online simulator.
This course is suitable for confident coders. Please note that this is not block/
visual coding.

Course description
Do you like to code and create? Let’s get coding using the BBC Micro Bit!
We will use block coding to control an online simulator and then download to a
physical micro bit. During the day you will have the opportunity to develop and
use your coding skills to design and build a range of exciting projects.
This course is designed for all coding abilities .

What is the Matter?
Course description
This is a course in Beginners’ Chemistry (‘Matter’). For the children:
Come and find out what Chemistry is all about. You will learn how to use special
laboratory equipment and find out what makes plastics, rocks, food, stars and
even us! Lots of experiments.
For the adults:
This course extends beyond the requirements of KS2 and sets out to make
Chemistry fun! Pupils will be encouraged to use the correct scientific vocabulary
and work ‘scientifically’.

For the children:
Come and learn some special skills and help to solve a crime!
Someone has broken into Mrs Bond’s house and stolen her precious diamond
brooch! By the end of the day you will know what clues to look for and how to

Facing the Energy Challenge
Course description
For the children:
The world’s population is rising fast and we all want our energy at the flick of a
switch. Every day we hear about the climate emergency caused by burning fossil
fuels. Take part in practical activities and try to find answers to such questions as:
How is electricity made?
Can we cope without fossil fuels?
Can we imagine life without cars?
Can we manage with using less energy?
For the adults:
This course extends beyond the requirements of KS2 Science and into other
curriculum areas. Students will use investigative skills and analyse scientific
evidence in an effort to address these important issues of our time.

Course description
For the children:
Chemical reactions can be slow, fast, noisy, colourful and spectacular!
Come and explore the wonderful world of Chemistry and find out how to do fun
experiments safely in our state of the art laboratory.
For the adults:
This course extends beyond the requirements of KS2 Science and aims to
encourage enthusiasm and interest in this branch of Science. Recognising
hazards and reducing risks will be important aspects and we shall be using the
correct scientific language throughout – good preparation for KS3.
This course is suitable for all students with an average reading age for Year 5 and
above.

Creative Writing: Spring Fever!
Course description
‘The Mole had been working very hard all the morning, spring-cleaning his little home. First with brooms, then with dusters; then on ladders and steps and chairs, with a brush and a pail of whitewash; till he had dust in his throat and eyes, and splashes of whitewash all over his black fur, and an aching back and weary arms. Spring was moving in the air above and in the earth below and around him, pene-trating even his dark and lowly little house with its spirit of divine discontent and
longing. Something up above was calling him imperiously... so he scraped and scratched and scratched and scraped, working busily with his little paws and
muttering to himself, 'Up we go! Up we go!' till at last, pop! his snout came out into the sunlight, and he found himself rolling in the warm grass of a great meadow.’
(The Wind in the Willows—Kenneth Grahame) Let’s celebrate the coming of Spring! We will read Spring poetry and prose written by some of the best children’s authors. We will look at how Spring arrives in different books and poems. We will personify her and write our own poetry about what she does and what magical powers she brings to the world. We will go outside and personify the natural world using imagery to bring our writing to life. We will personify flowers, leaves, the sky, the earth, the animals and give them all a voice. We will use drama techniques in performing extracts from literature. We will create an animal protagonist who is active in Spring and bring them to life in a story. Join me if you are creative, you love to read and write, and Spring makes you a tiny bit crazy.

A dragon has gone missing. Today you are a dragon expert and it is your job to
find it!
Join us on a magical dragon adventure. Use the clues to work out what the
escaped dragon looks like. Some are pictures, some are puzzles. Plan a
campaign to get the dragon back. Design a fail-safe way of catching the dragon
and solving the mystery.
During the day we will use drama, talk, puzzles and teamwork.
This course will appeal to the children who took part in the “Tell me a dragon…”
course, but is also suitable for children who haven’t done a course with us
before.

Year 5 and 6 English
Course Title
Creative Writing: When Daffodils Begin to Peer
Course description
(The Winter’s Tale Act IV)
…Why, then comes in the sweet o’ the year. We will study extracts from Shakespeare, stories and poems written by some of the finest writers. Using drama techniques we will commit famous lines to heart, including marching out iambic pentameter, and performing verses from Shakespeare. We will write a poem called March 14th about exactly what the University campus looks and feels like on the day of our course. Through outdoor learning we will personify flowers, leaves, the sky, the earth, the animals and give them all a voice. We will employ figurative language including simile and metaphor to describe things in different ways. The course will focus on the skills at the top of Bloom’s taxonomy, and the children will be encouraged to take risks, to invent and to create. Join me if you are creative and love to read, write and get your fingernails dirty!

Course Title
Macbeth in a day!
Course description
Come along for some drama, fun and creativity in our “Macbeth in a day!”
course.
During the day you will have the opportunity to do lots of drama, and
storytelling. Be bewitched by the witches! Discover the land of Scotland
hundreds of years ago! Investigate the plotting for power of Macbeth and his
wife!
We will find out more about how theatres worked in the time of Shakespeare
and go on a computer based 3D visit to Shakespeare’s Globe.
This is a day where you will be immersed in Shakespeare’s famous story, have
the opportunity to use your acting skills and build your confidence in using
Shakespearean language.
This course is suitable for children who are creative, enjoy using oral language
and drama.

Amazon Adventure
Course description
Are you interested in how the world works and how we can plan for a sustainable
future? The Amazon is an awesome place, but one where change is happening
fast.
During this course we will find out about the geography and history of rainforests
and the lives of the people who live in them. We will use maps, stories, pictures
and drama activities to help us understand how important the rainforests are to
planet earth.
You will have the chance to use your geography skills to investigate maps of The
Amazon; your sensory and descriptive skills will be needed as we travel through
video and drama to the world of the rainforest; you will take part in a fascinating
deforestation simulation game where your teamwork and negotiation skills will
be tested to their limits!
This course is designed to help you present your ideas clearly, work as part of a
team and to develop your confidence in discussing important issues such as
sustainability, trade, fairness and global citizenship.

Year 3 and 4 Art and Humanities
Course Title
Terrifying Totem Poles and Awesome American
Indian Stories
Course description
During the day we will explore some of the different Native American tribes and
their lives through a range of stories, videos, activities and art work. There will be
opportunities to consider what can be learnt about the Native American Indian
way of life that links to modern day environmental issues. In the afternoon,
children will create imaginative drawings of their own totem pole using ideas and
images from the morning session.
This course is suitable for anyone interested in stories and environmental issues,
learning from different cultures and art work.
There are no specific skills required in order to attend this workshop as there will
be a mixture and choice of activities.

Year 3 and 4 Art
Course Title
Tremendous Trees
Course description
We are surrounded by precious, wondrous trees of all types, shapes and sizes
which have captured the imaginations of artists through time.
During this one day course you will develop your knowledge and
understanding of trees and your drawing skills by sketching trees in the
university grounds . You will look at tree pictures by a variety of artists
including the ‘womping willow’ from Harry Potter and tree faeries by Arthur
Rackham. You will then use these as an inspiration for making your own
imaginative tree pictures. Please note the ‘What to bring’ section.

‘Draw Up’ Closer to Art
Course description

Drawing is at the heart of art. Artists throughout time have valued drawing as a
basis for exploring their ideas, discovering the world around them and seeing
things in different ways.
During the day you will have the opportunity to develop your skills in drawing to
create a 3D effect, firstly from shapes and then from a choice of objects using a
variety of tools and techniques. e.g. pencils, charcoal, coloured oil pastels,
brushes, pens.
You will look at artists’ examples of Still Life drawing and painting over time and
set up a still life picture of your own using objects provided. The aim is for you to
leave the day inspired by what you have learnt and equipped with further skills
to draw more!

Years 3, 4, 5, 6 Dance
Course Title
Stepping into Springtime!
Course description
‘Dance is the hidden language of the soul’ (Martha Graham)
This Contemporary Dance workshop will cover all the basic skills of National
Curriculum Dance, including space, time, levels, direction, dynamics and
pathways. You will work individually, in pairs, small groups and also as one large
group as you go through the day, getting to know each other well. We will look at
warm ups and stretching specifically for dancing together and learn the
importance of looking after our bodies well. The theme for this new workshop is
‘Stepping into Spring through dance’ and you will be generating your own ideas
together at the start of the session. You might have some ideas to bring with you
already! Please do.
There will be lots of opportunity for individual creating as well as learning set new
dance moves together. Recent research has proven that being creative helps
towards well-being. This day of dance will allow you to create, make friends and
perform to the best of your own ability, whilst having lots of fun along the way so
come along and give it a go.
This course is suitable for all abilities. Beginners in dance, as well as more
experienced dancers are very welcome to attend this mixed-age and mixed-ability
group workshop.

How many courses can I enrol on?
As many as you want! If you are applying for free places, your child / pupil can participate in two courses per term.
How do I book a free place?
Email us at [email protected] and we will send you an access code to use with your online booking. First, you will need to provide evidence, such as an email from your school confirming that your child is eligible for Pupil Premium or your NHS exemption letter.
Can my child miss school?
Please follow your school’s absence procedures. Authorised absence cannot be assumed.
How do I find out about your new courses?
Email us at [email protected] and we will add you to our mailing list. We will send you our course brochure three times per year.
How long are the courses?
The courses last a whole day. We ask you to drop your children off at 9.15am and collect them at 3.30pm. They will need to bring a packed lunch, water bottle and coat. We always try and ensure that the children play outside for their morning break and at lunchtime, but this is weather permitting.
My child is in Year 2 but is very able. Can they attend?
The courses are designed to stretch the most able children and so can be quite challenging. Year 2 children are not permitted to enrol on our Year 3 and 4 courses so that Year 4 children still have a great experience. Your child will be very welcome next year! Please ask to be put on our mailing list.
When should I book to avoid disappointment?
We close the bookings 48 hours before the course starts. This gives the tutor and coordinator time to prepare for the actual number of children who are coming and tailor the course to suit them. If courses are fully booked, you can add your email address to a waiting list via the online store.
