The MLC Graduate LivingCommunity (GLC) grew from therequests of graduates who alreadylived independently in the Twin Cities, but wanted additional support.

MLC graduates and parents recognizedthat learning differences wouldn’t disappear after graduation. Althoughthe families of MLC graduates wantedtheir young adults to maintain theirindependence, they also wanted thepeace of mind that someone would beavailable when a problem arose.

It is with great pride that I reflect on the past school year here atMinnesota Life College. What a successful year for our program!

This past year we have seen tremendous growth in our Graduate LivingCommunity. It has become a lifelong program that enables participants toaccess services when and if they are needed. The number of participantsnow surpasses the Undergraduate Program and will continue to grow. The entire graduating class of 2010 moved into the Graduate LivingCommunity where they live independently, pursue meaningful employment, and live and participate in their community. We are celebrating the successof the Graduate Living Community by showcasing the program and thestudents in this Annual Report.

It was our donors who made last year's Gala the most successful one yet, surpassing our goals and bringing in over $250,000 for scholarships andprograms. It's through the support of our donors that half of our studentsare able to receive financial assistance to attend our program. It is onlywith this dedication from our donors that we are able to achieve our missionof providing young adults with learning differences and autism spectrumdisorders the opportunity to learn “Real Skills for Real Life®”.

Another highlight of the year was the approval for Minnesota Life Collegeto become a SEVIS-certified institution, which allows us to admit interna-tional students into the program. We know this will help in our growth, aswell as receiving international recognition.

It has truly been a remarkable year here at MLC! Every day, we are working hard to fulfill our mission. It is with a humbleheart that I say, "thank you" to each and every person who has given their time, talents, and resources. We couldn't havedone it without your support.

Thank you for being a part of this community, and sharing in our belief that every young adult with learning differencesdeserves the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Kathryn Thomas, M.Ed.Executive Director

Proud To Be......

Our Graduate Living Community wasdesigned to enable MLC graduates toexperience Independence in Action, yet be within arms-length of support. This has allowed MLC graduates to beindependent, but to maintain theirindependence with support in keyareas such as social networking, careermanagement, and enhancement, health, and wellness.

Graduates and families say that byhaving these supports in place, GLCencourages and helps graduates maintain a healthy lifestyle and continual growth.

History of MLC’s Graduate Living CommunityMLC’s Graduate Living Communitybegan on September 1, 1999, origi-nally called “Outreach Services.” The premise of the program was toprovide a “safety net” for graduates of MLC, utilizing a spend-downaccount to offer services in priorityareas on an as-needed basis.

In July of 2004, our services becamemore formalized and as a result, theGraduate Living Program was devel-oped. The program was developed

How did the Graduate Living Community begin?

It grew out of a need.

Geoff Barnard(GLC parent)Hello! I’m Geoff Barnard andmy son John graduated fromMLC in 2006. When he grad-uated from high school, wedidn’t quite know whatwould come next. We feltlike we had done all wecould for John, and for himto reach the next level wouldtake something outside ofour own family system. MLCturned out to be that “some-thing”. There were manythings that we were not sureJohn would be able to do onhis own. But he surprised usby becoming proficient atriding public transportation, managing his own bankaccount, cooking his ownmeals, but most important ofall - he made friends! Itseemed only natural thatJohn would join the GLCwhen he finished MLC. It’swhere all his friends and sup-port systems are. He wouldn’twant to live anywhere else. I think one GLC momentthat has made us most proudwas seeing John up on stageperforming and singing with“Count It All Joy”. Hearinghim and his friends belt outall those songs was trulywonderful, joyful, and inspiring! In the comingyears we expect to see Johnstill enjoying GLC and all it’sactivities, and hopefully hewill have found a job that hereally enjoys.

Patrick Tullo, Jr.Hi! I am Patrick Tullo and I graduated from Minnesota Life College in2002. While I was there I think that my greatest accomplishment was myability to learn how to open myself up more to others and build morefriendships. I joined the Graduate Living Community when it first beganin 2004. I believe that living in the Colony Apartments, and being amember of the GLC gives me the chance to continue to be independentand to belong to a community. If I were to return to my hometown, I could not do that. I am currently employed at Best Buy, Corp. andhave been there for over eight years! In the future I hope to still have myown place and still be working at Best Buy, and still looking young, too! My favorite activity in theGraduate Living Community is the opportunity to be able to participate in social activities whichhelp me continue to build friendships, get out of my apartment, and do fun stuff. It’s hard toexplain what my GLC friendships mean to me. It is so great to relate to others that have the samechallenges I do. To this day, I can’t think of where I’d be if I didn’t have these people in my life.
