Investigating the siteNapier Tower – Merchiston Campus

The brief was to project an installation on one of the walls inside Merchiston Campus. My site is the interior space of Napier Tower. It is one of the main corridors leading to design studios.

Approximate size of the space:H= 2.4mL= 3.5mD= 0.8m

Details:-Space passed by many students and members of staff-Light switches on the left side for the floor lights and a ceiling spotlight-Narrow window on the right side-Movable objects in front of the wall

Light switches for floor and ceiling lights

Movable chairs, table and stands

Deeply situated in the wall, very narrow window

Concepttime rush stress

The site that I was given is a connection between the main entrance and corridors to computing centre and design studios, so it is constantly used by many students, including myself.

Forced to use the public transport, I usually arrive to Merchiston 1-2 minutes before the lecture starts. Passing the interior space of Napier Tower I’m always in a hurry trying to guess how much time (if any) I have left. Using my personal experience I decided to project something that would NOT ALLOW students to forget about the university’s rush and stress.

The idea was to create a projection of many clocks going in a very fast, different and chaotic rhythm. Using the logo of Edinburgh Napier University, the red triangle will be used as a centre of each clock.

Concept DevelopmentProcessing Sketches

Video 1 – By using Processing the first concept sketch has been created. This video shows how the clocks are made to move in a different and chaotic rhythm.

Video 2 – Adding more clocks and making the shape of my projection quite narrow to suite the space on the wall between the window and the chair/table, that usually is situated in the left corner of the space.

Concept DevelopmentProjection Test

Testing the first Processing sketch on the actual site by using a projector.

- Checking the size of each of the clocks and of the installation as a whole. - Looking at the shape of the projection and how it collaborates with the window on the right and the chair on the left side.- Testing the projection by moving the projector to other places

Final DesignAdding the Logo and Sound

The final installation design is integrated with the sound of 2 different clocks playing at the same time to create even more confusion.

The logo of Edinburgh Napier University, including the type of font and colour, has been kept as the original.
