Packing List

The ideal sales package for PROTON 103 is as mentioned below:

• Please make sure that these components are present.

• In case of short supply or damage detection, contact the source from where you have purchased the system.

Extension Numbers

• Three extensions are identified by single digit numbers: ‘2’, ’3’ and ‘4’. The trunk can be accessed by dialing

‘0’.

Calling Other Extension

• Just lift your handset, wait for dial tone and dial extension number you want to talk to. If called extension is

free, you will hear ring back tone and the other end starts ringing. Once called extension answers your call

by lifting handset, ring back tone is stopped and speech is established.

• If the called extension is not free, you will get busy tone. You can request Auto Call Back or Interrupt Request

feature here. Please refer “Chapter 2: Features” for more details.

Making External Call

• Dial ‘0’ and if the trunk is free, it will be connected to you. Wait for dial tone from the central office (PSTN)

exchange and then start dialing digits of the external party.

• If the trunk is occupied by someone else, you will get busy tone. You can request Auto Call Back or Interrupt

Request feature. Please refer “Chapter 2: Features” for more details.

• After conversation is over, you may replace your handset and the trunk is freed automatically for any

incoming or other outgoing calls.

Answering a Call

• Lift your handset and the ring will stop. You may start-talking immediately. Internal ring is one pulse whereas

trunk ring is of two pulses. This helps you identify source of the ring before you answer the call.

Receiving Trunk (Incoming) Calls

• The PROTON 103 is very flexible in directing trunk calls. Whenever there is a ring on the trunk, the PROTONsenses it and directs that ring to one (or more) of the extensions.

• You can program two different extensions to receive trunk rings one during normal office hours (day mode)

and the other during after office hours (night mode).

• Programmed extension can receive incoming call even when it is free or already in speech with some other

extension.

• If the programmed extension is free, it starts ringing. To answer the ring, just lift your handset and start

talking.

• If the programmed destination is in speech with some other extension, it gets trunk call waiting tone

(repeated double sharp beeps) over his speech. The extension can get connected to the ringing trunk by

dialing ‘Flash’. The other extension is put on hold and gets hold tone.

• In case the programmed destination is not attended when there is ring on the trunk, it rings for 15 seconds.

After that other extensions will be given ring. It is possible to ring other extensions one by one. Or all at the

same time. This is called hunting.

• One of the following four hunting options can be selected.

• Round-Robin Ring: Try one extension after the other if programmed destination does not answer the

call in 15Sec.All three extensions are tried starting from the programmed extension. Each extension gets

ring for 15 seconds.

• Delayed Simultaneous Ring: If the programmed destination does not respond to the trunk ring within

15Sec. All three extensions are given ring. Any of the ringing or interrupted extensions can answer the

call. Rings on other extensions will be stopped when the call is answered.

• Immediate Simultaneous Ring: Immediate simultaneous ring is selected all three extensions will be

given ring immediately.

• Hunting Disabled: Only the programmed destination will ring. The trunk ring will not be diverted to any

other extension. It will continue to ring as long as there is ring on the trunk.

• For programming of trunk destinations, refer to “Chapter 3: Programming”.

Day and Night Modes

• Two different extensions can be programmed for trunk incoming calls. One extension will ring whenever

there is a call on the trunk during normal office hours. This is known as day mode destination.

• The other extension will ring whenever there is a call on the trunk after office hours. This is called night mode

destination.

• Day or Night Mode can be selected by following steps:

Changing Day-Night Mode

• Enter programming mode by dialing 19-Password.

• Dial ‘11’ for Day Mode.

• Dial ‘12’ for Night Mode.

• You can also make changing of Day-Night Mode Automatic.

• When a trunk call is not answered on the programmed extension for day mode, the PROTON goes into

night mode automatically. The next fresh call on the trunk will be directed to the night mode extension,

without trying on the day mode extension.

• Automatic change from night mode to day mode is done in the same way.

• This automatic day-night mode switching is programmable. Refer “Chapter 3: Programming” for moredetails.

Power Down Operation

• During power failure you can handle your external calls through extension #2. This ensures that basic

telephone functions continue. When power returns, system will start automatically and normal operation

resumes.

Tones

• The PROTON supports various tones to enhance interaction between user and the PROTON. Most of them

are PSTN compatible.

Dial Tone:

• Generated by continuous 360Hz. When you lift your handset you get dial tone.

Ring Back Tone:

• PSTN compatible tone derived from dial tone with cadence of two sharp pulses followed by longer off

time. When you dial internal number and that number is free then you will get the ring back tone.

Busy Tone:

• High pitch beeps with on period longer than off period. When you dial internal extension that is busy, youget busy tone. When you dial ‘0’ and if the trunk is occupied by someone else then also you get the busy

tone.

Error Tone:

• High pitch continuous tone without interruption. You get error tone when you do some wrong operation or

you dial some disallowed feature.

Internal Call Waiting Tone:

• In the form of sharp ticks given every 3 seconds. When someone is barging-in on you then you get the

Internal Call Waiting Tone. In programming mode also you get this tone.

12 PROTON 103 V1 System Manual

Trunk Call Waiting Tone:

• Consists of two ticks followed by long off time (approximately 3 seconds). When you are talking to some

internal party and there is ring on the trunk, then you get this tone.

Hold Tone:

• Short beep followed by longer off duration repeated every second. When someone puts you on hold you

get the hold tone.

Confirmation Tone:

• Fast continuous tone

Music:

• Caller or called person on the trunk hears music whenever he is put on hold.

Rings

• Two different rings are generated and given to extensions.

Internal Ring:

• Uniform single pulse ring with longer off time. When one extension is calling another, this ring is given to

the called extension.

External Ring:

• Double pulse ring. The programmed extension gets this ring whenever there is an incoming ring on the

trunk.

What’s this? • Get connected to the trunk automatically every time you lift your handset.

How to use it?

• When you want to use the trunk without using the access code ‘0’, you can invoke this feature. Once this

feature is set from your phone, you are connected to the trunk every time you lift your handset. You will listen

PSTN dial tone if the trunk is not in use. You may start dialing external number.

• This is useful when most of the calls made by you are on the trunk. It gives feeling as if you are connected to

the trunk. The PROTON is made transparent. Delay involved in dialing ‘0’ to get the trunk is eliminated.• If you wish to use this feature, activate it by programming feature access level for your extension.

Chapter 3: Programming

Introduction

• On-line programming mode is supported by the PROTON. All programming is allowed from any extension.

Moreover, password security is offered to avoid unauthorized alterations.

• Programming is accomplished from dialing separate code sequences for individual extensions and feature

groups. This eliminates need for entering long and confusing programming sequences. You can change the

programming of anyone extension without changing other existing parameters.

Enter Program Mode

Follow given steps from any extension:

• Programming tone is indication of your entering in the program mode successfully. If your password is not

correct, you will hear error tone. Try again above sequence with correct password.

• If your code has been correct and accepted by the system, you will get confirmation tone. Once again you

are ready to change any other parameter, if you wish.

• During the process of entering codes, if you dial wrong code/sequence you get error tone. Disconnect by

putting down your handset once and you will get programming tone once again. Now, you can enter the

correct sequence.

Flash Timer

• Flash is used extensively by the PROTON as one of the digits for accessing various features. Flash is

actually momentarily breaking of the extension current loop. If this break time is of optimum level, the

PROTON senses it rightly as a flash. But, if the time is more, it can be wrongly taken as disconnection. On

the other hand, if the flash timer is set to a higher value, a genuine disconnection will take longer time. Some

imported phones and cord-less phones are known to use longer flash time. You have to program the

extension flash timer with little higher value than the flash timer used by the phone or cord-less connected to

it.

Chapter 4: Installation and Troubleshooting

Installation

• The system has provision for wall mounting, but you can mount it in any other convenient way. An ideal place

for mounting the system should be such that it reduces overall wiring. Mains outlet and ventilation are other

factors to be considered with due importance.

• There are push-type terminals provided on the left hand side of the box. They are covered with a top cover.

Open this top cover for connecting extensions and the trunk line. Extensions begin from 2. Single, twisted

wire pairs with thickness of 0.5mm to 1.0mm are to be used to connect extension phones to the system.

System side of the wire ends should be stripped about 1 cm for firm and neat contacts.

• You can extend the trunk from the junction box with 0.5mm thick single, twisted wire pair and then connect it

to the PROTON as explained above. After connecting all extensions and the trunk, put the top cover back.

• If your trunk line is of pulse type, keep all the extension phones in pulse mode. If your trunk line is of tone

(DTMF) type, keep all the extension phones in tone mode.

• Once the extension and trunk connections are made, it is time to supply power to the PROTON 103. Connectthe Mains pin to a 2-pin socket that supplies 230VAC, 50Hz.

• You may take help of your electrician in getting voltages and checked before connecting the PROTON 103 to

the Mains.

• Apply power to your PROTON 103. Green colour on LED provided on the top of the enclosure will glow. You

can check functioning of the PROTON by testing all the extensions and the trunk.

• Test all extensions for Dial Tone, Ring Back Tone, Speech and Ring one-by-one.

• Test functioning of the trunk by dialing outside number from one of the extensions and checking the trunk

tones and speech. Ring on the trunk can be tested by asking your friend to dial your number.

Troubleshooting• Problem with the PROTON could be a partial failure or total breakdown. If the problem is partial, some part of

the system

• may not work but does not affect other parts. An extension not ringing or giving busy even when idle are

examples of such partial failures. During a total failure condition, nothing seems to be working.

• Following sections explain procedure to localize a fault.

Mains Supply

• If the problem is in the Mains supply then there will be total breakdown. There are three external parts

related to the Mains supply. If any of these is not working, the PROTON will not work at all. Ensure proper

functioning of these parts.

• Mains Socket

• Remove 3-pin plug from the socket and test the presence of proper Mains supply. Voltage should be

in the range of 200V-250V. If found OK, the ‘ON’ LED should turn on when Mains switch is operated

(Provided mains fuse and cable are OK).

• Mains Cable

• If it is damaged, it will result in total stoppage of the PROTON. If found OK, the ‘ON’ LED should turn

on when the Mains switch is operated (Provided Mains fuse is OK).

• Mains Fuse

• The fuse, if blown, should be replaced only after investigating cause of blowing. Rating of the fuse

must be strictly followed. Current rating of the mains fuse is 250 mA.

Extension Faults

• When any extension is not working, attempt should be made to localize the problem. Mainly there are three

parts making the extension interface.

Telephone Instrument

• First try to replace his telephone with tested, good quality telephone. Try to establish calls from this

extension and give ring to this extension from any other extension. If no problem is encountered, the fault

reported was due to the bad telephone.

Extension Wiring

• After making sure that the extension telephone instrument is OK, check for the extension wiring. This can

easily be verified by disconnecting extension wires from the MDF and connecting telephone directly on

the MDF. If the telephone operates properly, it means the problem is with the extension wiring. Problem

with wiring can be in the form of shorted wires due to broken insulation. Or open wire, which may happen

due to accidental pulling. Rectify the wiring fault before proceeding further.

Internal Faults• If the fault persists even after ensuring both the extension telephone and its wiring OK, the fault can be

within the PROTON system. Contact your dealer for rectifying the problem.

Trunk Faults

• When you find some problem with the trunk operation, the problem could be because of the PROTON or the

trunk line itself.

• First of all, you have to determine faulty section. To test the trunk, isolate the trunk from the PROTON by

disconnecting the trunk from the PROTON. Now connect a good quality working telephone directly to the

trunk and test following:

• Dial tone• Dialing of numbers

• Speech

• Incoming ring and speech

• If any of these are not found satisfactory, there is a problem with the trunk. Contact your Central Office

(PSTN) and inform them about the problem.

• If all above tests are found satisfactory, problem could be in your PROTON. Contact your dealer for rectifying

the problem.
