Protection & ControlServices
Our experts work tirelessly to help our clients assess their existing assets and
provide innovative solutions for the upgrade and modernization of aging protection
systems with the latest available technology. Our experts hold an extensive
technical knowledge and project delivery experience and can overcome any
project’s challenges, such as:
› Ensuring the complete and complex integration of new technologies in existing
facilities;
› Maintaining compatibility between the new protection system and all other
systems within a facility;
› Optimizing the planification of the construction and commissioning activities
required for the P&C systems’ upgrade in conjunction with other planned
outage activities within a facility.
We deliver a full suite of services that includes:
› Due diligence and conditions assessment reports;
› Feasibility studies,
› Owner’s engineer services
› Conceptual design;
› Support during tendering process;
› Detailed design, including:
› System architecture for conventional systems, which complies
with IEC-61850 standards;
› Cybersecurity and NERC-CIP;
› Signal list definitions and database management;
› Development of communication protocol specifications;
› Schematics, wiring, interconnections, cables lists, layout, etc.;
› Construction supervision;
› Commissioning and acceptance tests on site.
Our Expertise in Protection and Control
With the rapid growth of Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) that monitor, control
and protect power equipment, there is an increased demand for cost–effective and
integrated automation systems.
SNC-Lavalin’s Clean Power team provides complete power generation and grid
design solutions for:
› Power Generation Plants (Hydro generating facilities, thermal power plants,
etc.);
› Distribution systems below 25kV;
› Transmission lines and substations up to 500kV;
› Industrial facilities and their electrical system interfaces.
We have extensive experience in protection, metering, control and automatic
control systems, including digital DCS and SCADA, which encompasses:
› Associated communications and data handling systems that support the
protection, measure and control systems in covering technologies for LAN and
WAN digital networks, radio, satellite and power line carrier systems;
› Design and implementation of a variety of IEDs, such as Remote Terminal
Units (RTUs) for traditional SCADA systems, data gateways, Human Machine
Interface (HMI), communication systems, firewalls, merging units and bay
control units.
Our expertise also covers associated communications and data handling
systems required to support the protection,measure and control systems in
covering the range of technologies for LAN and WAN digital networks, FO
networks, radio and satellite systems and power line carrier systems.
Relay settings and testing
We use the CMC 356 Universal Relay Test Set and Commissioning Tool for the testing of any generation or type of protection relays using six current sources with a three-phase mode of up to 64 A / 860 VA per channel. These six currents, as well as four voltage output channels, are continuously and independently adjustable in amplitude, phase and frequency. The tool’s network interface supports comprehensive testing in IEC 61850 environments using optional GOOSE simulation and subscription, in addition to sampled values simulation functionality.
Using this technology, our commissioning engineers can perform wiring and plausibility checks on substations using primary injection of high currents from the test set, as well as: › 5 A relay testing; › Static and numerical relay testing; › Busbar protection of up to 22 signal generators; › End-to-End testing using GPS or IRIG-B; › Transient fault, CT saturation and CB simulations, and more.
