Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta UMY was established on March 1981 as one of the business affiliations of Muhammadiyah, a religious social organization. As a modern Islamic University, UMY’s vision is to create leading and the enlightening graduates. In line with its vision, UMY does not only directs its students to master the latest science and technologies but it also guides the students in order to have strong islamic moderate characters.

In 2012, UMY has achieved “Green Campus Award”

as “Environment Friendly Campus” and also in 2013

as a pioneer in “Energy Conservation”. Both awarded

by The La Tofi School of Corporate Social

Responsibility in collaboration with Ministry of Forestry

and Ministry of Industry, Republic of Indonesia.

UMY has accredited “A” (Excellent) by the National

Higher Education in February 2013, this shows that

UMY has conducted an excellent academic and

organization process. Moreover, UMY is also

acknowledged as the best private university in Central

Java and Special Region of Yogyakarta based on

4ICU and Webometric (in June, 2013).

Currently, UMY has 3 departments of Polytechnic, 23

Undergraduate Programs under 8 Faculties and 8

Special Region of Yogyakarta

Large majority of the population are native Javanese.

However as the city with large numbers of Universities and

relatively lower cost of living compared to other Indonesian

cities, Yogyakarta has attracted large numbers of students

from all over Indonesia. As the result there are many other

Indonesian ethnic groups living in Yogyakarta, especially from

eastern parts of Indonesia. Yogyakarta also has large

numbers of Chinese Indonesian ethnic, clustered in and

around Yogyakarta Chinatown near Malioboro. The inter-

ethnic relations between Chinese Indonesian and native

Javanese in Yogyakarta are mainly harmonious as Chinese

Indonesian here were absorbed within Javanese culture and

cultural exchanges is common.

Yogyakarta features a tropical monsoon climate. The city

features a lengthy wet season running from October until

June and a short dry season that only covers the months of

July, August and September. The city averages roughly

2,200 mm (87 in) of precipitation annually. Yogyakarta

experiences particularly heavy rainfall from November

through April. Temperatures remain relatively constant

throughout the course of the year, with average high

temperatures at around 30 degrees Celsius and average

Yogyakarta Special Regionat a Glance

Special Region of Yogyakarta is located in Java, Indonesia. It is renowned as a centre of classical Javanese fine art and culture such as batik, ballet, drama, music, poetry, and puppet shows. At Yogyakarta's centre is the kraton, or Sultan's palace. Surrounding the kraton is a densely populated residential neighbourhood that occupies land that was formerly the Sultan's sole domain. Nearby to the city of Yogyakarta is Merapi Volcanoe. The northern outskirts of the city run up to the southern slopes of the mountain in Sleman Regency. Gunung Merapi (literally Mountain of Fire in Indonesian/Javanese), is an active Stratavolcano located on the border between Central Java and Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

Living in Yogyakarta is commonly cheaper than other big cities in Indonesia. During your study in Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta, you can find various types of boarding house (rumah kos), yet affordable price. There are many boarding houses located near the campus. Mostly, this kind of accommodation is gender spesific for either females or males only. The boarding house price variesfrom around IDR 200,000 to IDR 1,000,000 per month depending on its facilities and location.

Accommodation UNIVERSITY RESIDENCE (UNIRES)

Starting from 2008, UMY holds a program called UNIVERSITY

RESIDENCE (UNIRES). This program aim at building the

students morals and Islamic characters that will be beneficial

for the society. This program is designed to meet the needs of

the students for gaining the knowledge of Islamic Religion,

English and Arabic languages and the implementation in daily

life. This UNIRES program is open for both male and female

freshman students for a year. Some benefits in joining this

program are: the student can stay in UNIRES which is located

near to campus, and its conducive environment can increase

the students knowledge and Islamic personalities, beside that

the securities also available for 24 hours per day. The best

facilities in UNIRES are three twin-block-four-story buildings,

separate location between male and female students, fully

furnished bed room, bath room and pantry, hot spot area and

sports facilities.

UMY POLYTECHNIC (DIPLOMA PROGRAM)

Electro Medical Engineering

Diploma of Electro-Medical Engineering

prepares the graduates to become middle level

experts in electro medical engineering. The goal

of Electro Medical Engineering program is to

educate and provide training in electrical

engineering and expertise in current and future

medical electrical equipments.

Mechanical Automotive and Manufacturing

Engineering

Diploma of Mechanical Automotive and Manufacturing

Engineering prepares the graduates to obtain both an

automotive and manufacturing qualification. The

automotive field concern on diagnosic maintenance,

repair, and development knowledge in the automotive

field: manual and electronic. The manufacturing field

concentrates on product design and product process.

Applied Accounting

Diploma of Applied Accounting prepares graduates to

become experts in both Islamic accounting and

information technology for accounting. The increasing

need from various national and international banks,

Islamic Education

The Department of Islamic Education enables

you to became professional educator, trainer for

education, and researcher. To be able to create

quality religious educators, Islamic Education

has completed the curriculum in accordance

with the demands of the times. Islamic

Education is accredited A in 2010 as a proof that

the program is well organized, produces

qualified graduates, and has a good curriculum.

Islamic Counseling and Communication

The Department of Islamic Counseling and

Communication has the orientation not only to provide

graduates in accordance with the prescribed

academic standards, but also to meet the

qualifications of global market. The graduates are

expected to be come experts in both Islamic sciences

and communications and broadcasting in the

particular field of Islamic broadcasting and Islamic

journalism.

Islamic Economic and Banking

The Department of Islamic Economic and Banking

prepares graduates to become scholars of Islamic

law from the Quran and Al Hadith. Islamic Economic

and Banking prepares graduates as Islamic banking

practitioners, sharia (Islamic law) supervisory board,

consultant in Islamic financial institutions, as well as

researchers in economics and Islamic banking. The

unique learning methods offered by the programs

are aimed at balancing between the sharia (Islamic

law) and practical skills in the fields of banking

management regarding the learning process.

Law

Regular and International Class (IPOLS)

The Faculty of Law prepares graduates to

become well equipped in both Civil Law and

Islamic Law as a legal basis for analyzing

legal issues, finding solutions, and proposing

better legal policies to decision maker at

various level. International Program for Law

and Sharia established to face many global

challenges. It is a unique program that

provides broader career opportunities.

International Relations

Regular & International Class (IPIREL)

International Relations is a department which

specializes in studying international issues. Students

can choose this program as a starting point to better

prepare for their future career. In fact, International

Relations is one of the outstanding study programs

in Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta and

Indonesia.

Governmental Studies

Regular & International Class (IGOV)

The goal of Governmental Studies is to become the

center of excellence as well as the center of the

political sciences development and public

management through qualified education, research,

and community service and equipped with the faith

of Islamic values. The Governmental Studies has

two specializations, namely, political science and

public management.

Communication

The Department of Communication Science

consist of; Public Relations, Advertising, and

Broadcasting. Public Relations focuses on the

social and political aspects of public relations.

Advertising, on the other hand, focuses on

business advertising. Lastly, Broadcasting

focuses on documentary video.

Management

The Department of Management is aimed at

improving the quality of graduates by creating a

good academic atmosphere. Applying the

Competency-Based curriculum matched by

infrastructure development and improvement of

information technology to prepare graduates for

work. In line with organizing cooperation and

networking with companies, institutions, and

society is continually taken to prepare students as

qualified graduates.

Accounting

The Department of Accounting promotes a

professional attitude and expertise for graduates.

Professional attitudes develop through a

combination of professional ethics and Islamic

morals. Professional expertise develops through a

strong scientific foundation to support manual or

computer-based practice. These are included in the

curriculum in order to create outstanding graduates;

morally and intellectually.

Agrotechnology

The Department of Agrotechnology prepares

graduates to address global and vital challenges.

The learning process will be directed to meet those

challenges, such as, food security, bio-energy

independence, global warming reduction, industrial

crops and plantation development, regional

development and environmental issues.

Agribusiness

The Department of Agribusiness prepares

graduates to be agriculture entrepreneurs who will

pioneer and develop the sharia agribusiness

(Islamic business ethics). To achieve the objectives,

the department of agribusiness organizes Agrimart,

a store which run by the student along with learning

process in the class.

Economics

Regular and International Class (IPIEF)

The Department of Islamic Economic Finance

and Banking is the first organized Islamic

economics program with status under the

Ministry of National Education and Culture. More

than that, the Department of Islamic Economic

Finance and Banking in Indonesia are the only

programs providing international standards at

undergraduate department level through

International Programs for Islamic Economics

and Finance (IPIEF).

Electrical Engineering

Department of Electrical Engineering as one of

the flagship programs of Universitas

Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta was established in

1992. This course guides the student to be able

to work in the fields of science and the

profession of a very dynamic and challenging.

Department of Electrical Engineering supported

by professional staff and lectures that are

competent in variety areas and expertise.

Civil Engineering

The Department of Civil Engineering prioritizes

quality education by giving students an

excellent curriculum. The department is not only

teaches on subject of civil engineering, but also

skills related to civil engineering, such as, the

project management, entrepreneurial skills,

information technology, social principles and

aspects of self competence in regard with the

job market requirement.

Mechanical Engineering

The Department of Mechanical Engineering

prepares student to become their field. The

department offers excellent curriculum which is

based on the standard of Ministry of Culture and

Education as well as the criteria of Accreditation

Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET). In

addition the department has also conducted studies

on Industrial Need, Social Need, Professional Need

and Self Evaluation Report; thus be assured that the

graduates qualified to fill the needs of national and

international workforce.

Information Technology

The Department of Information Technology

offers a unique learning method called cloud

campus. The cloud campus method is a

refinement of the e-learning method that

combines learning in the classroom or lab with

online learning. In addition, to preparing

internationally-minded graduates for work, the

department of information technology is

cooperating with two world leading training

companies, namely, Cisco Networking

Academy and NIIT, India.

Medical Studies

The Department of Medical Studies prepares

professional doctors. The education stage is

divided into two parts, Medical Education and

Professional Education. Lectures will take place on

campus, hospitals, and practices by using Problem

Based Learning method. The method allows

students from the beginning to learn using pre-

clinical and clinical approaches, while the

Professional Education will take place fully at

hospitals.

Nursing

The Department of Nursing enables graduates to

become professional nurses by providing two

semesters for professional education for nurse.

Lectures will take place on campus by applying

Problem Based Learning methods in the mini

hospital, which is designed like a hospital in order

to introduce the world of healthcare since the

beginning of their study. Professional Education

where students act as co-nurse and Diploma of

English is also provided for students to answer the

need for professional nurses.

Dentistry

Department of Dentistry enables graduates to

become professional dentists. The study term

will be conducted for 11 semesters, which is

divided into undergraduate education dentistry

for 8 semesters and 3 semesters of professional

education. Lectures take place on campus and

various dental clinics that apply a Problem-Based

Learning method. The method allows students

from the very beginning of the semester to be

exposed to a variety of cases / issues in the field

of dentistry that brings students into active

learning environment.

Pharmacy

The Department of Pharmacy prepares work ready

graduates by applying an excellent learning method

called Problem Based Learning and Islamic

Integrated Curriculum. There are facilities that

support the student learning process, such as,

pharmacies and the mini hospital provided by

department. Lectures will take place not only on

campus but also in hospitals, pharmacies, and drug

industries. Students will also be equipped with

practical activities, such as, e - lab and clinical skills

(skills labs).

Arabic Education

The Department of Arabic Education prepares

graduates to fill the need for education in the

Arabic world, as the need for education

competent Arabic competence has increased.

The department is committed to give students

with, not only with knowledge, but also with a

good understanding of Islamic morality.

Japanese Education

The Department of Japanese Education prepares you

to master the core competencies including mastery of

the Japanese language, teaching and research;

additional competencies which include;

entrepreneurship and information technology, and

procurement of soft skills based on Islamic values.

The prospected graduates are able to apply the

knowledge and skills for the betterment of society and

the state.The graduates are also expected to

compete in national and global competencies in

building a career in the field of employment.

English Education

The English Education Department offers a program

for students with an interest in Teaching English.

However, the uniqueness of Curriculum-Based

Competency will further equip students with

competitive advantages. The Competency-Based

Curriculum scheme of subjects taught is based on

the competency needed by graduates to effectively

perform their future duty as teachers, researchers,

linguists and English-based entrepreneurs.

MASTER PROGRAMS

Management

The Department of Management is a business

school that offers knowledge and business skills

based on Islamic ethical values. The global

business environment increases rapidly and

promising, as well the need for businesses such

as managers. The department prepares

graduates to become managers and

professionals who have the capability of

innovation, decision making, managerial

knowledge and skills for leading businesses

based on business ethic and Islamic values.

Governmental Study

The Department of Governmental Studies is an

advanced program that focuses on areas of

governance, especially the activities undertaken by

institutions, such as, the central government and

the local government. Besides, the Department of

Governmental Study also emphasizes courses on

public policy and government management. Good

governance, including transparency, accountability,

professionalism and participatory approaches are

prioritized in the learning process in order to deepen

the understanding on good governance.

Politics and International Relations

The Department of Politics and International Relations

prepares students to become leaders with academic

and professional skills who are able to apply the

science of international relations in managing

international cooperation. Moreover, the department

prepares students to develop and disseminate

knowledge of international relations, particularly the

study of international cooperation, which is focused on

improving people's lives, enriching the national culture,

and supporting the development of a democratic civil

society.

Islamic Studies

Islamic studies has four master programs that

became the pre-eminent, i.e; Educational

Psychology Islam, Islamic legal Thinking,

Communication and Counseling of Islam and

Islamic Economics. With 4 that program

expected to print masters who have expertise in

the field of theoretical and practical about Islam.

Hospital Management

The Department of Hospital Management has a vision

to become a excellence in the year of 2021, with

global insights and based on Islamic values. To

achieve the vision, the department recruits the experts

and gives good supporting facilities. Dynamic curricula

will help the department to create master in hospital

management to fulfill the need of insightful global

manager. Furthermore, the program will also produce

graduates who are able to devote their knowledge for

the benefit of the community, professionally with noble

character.

Nursing

Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta as one of

the leading Universities in Indonesia, trusted by

society to conduct education a master degree in

the field of nursing. Graduate Program in nursing

The Doctoral Program of UMY offers two programs: Psychology of

Islamic Education and Islamic Politics. The Doctoral Program aims to

create academicians (scientists, lectures, teachers, and researchers)

have a Doctorate Degree with high quality of intellectuality, moral

integrity and able to conduct scientific development. The education

is conducted though a course that emphasizes on leadership and
