SUBURB PROFILE Q2 2014 The following charts provide an overview of household types within Epping, based on data collected in the 2011 census. Epping, located within the City of Whittlesea, is 22km north of Melbourne's CBD. At the 2011 ABS Census, Epping had a population of 26,855 people. Epping's settlement dates back to 1839, whereby the area was used for farming purposes. However, it wasn' t until 1970-1990 that the suburb experienced significant population growth, as Epping changed from being a rural township, to a residential suburb on the fringe of Melbourne. Epping has today become a highly sought after suburb for young families. The suburb has well developed infrastructure with a wide variety of established schools, childcare and recreation facilities for children. Furthermore, Epping features abundant retail facilities. This includes a regional shopping centre, Epping Plaza, which is home to over 215 stores, as well as Dalton Village Shopping Centre and the new Lyndarum Town Centre in Epping North. Epping is also well served by transport links. Serveral bus routes operate in the suburb, while Epping Railway Station delivers commuters to the city in under forty minutes. The Hume Freeway provides easy access to the Ring Road and, in turn, Tullamarine Airport and the Melbourne CBD by car. To provide for anticipated population growth in Epping, key infrastructure developments have been undertaken or planned for the area. This includes major upgrade works to the Epping Railway Station in November 2011, $29 million upgrade of Northern Hospital, future regional reserve adjacent to the existing Epping soccer stadium as well as a number of new schools/childcare for the suburb.
