Mission Statement

• Fly to 30 kilometers

• Collect data on amount of humidity in the air at various altitudes and temperatures– Hoping to find an altitude with low enough

humidity to keep ozone from reacting with aluminum

• Test the effectiveness of foam core to keep the BalloonSat at operational temperature without additional insulation– Design that could allow for more of mass

The Project YES! BalloonSat will fly to an altitude of approximately 30 kilometers. The mission shall be to test how much humidity is in the air relative to various altitude levels and temperatures in hopes of finding where a physical atmosphere sample could be gathered on future missions and brought down without the ozone in the air reacting with an aluminum collection container. At the same time, the Project YES! BalloonSat shall test the effectiveness of foam core at keeping the BalloonSat hardware at operating temperature, without using extra insulation. If a naked foam core layer is sufficient to maintain operating temperature, then the removal of additional insulation would allow for more of the mass to be dedicated to science payload.

• As of now nothing has been ordered, our goal is to have all parts ordered by Thursday

• It should take approximately 5-7 business days for shipping, so the hardware should be delivered by October 16th

Design

• Draw designs on foam core, cut out pieces (leaving paper in tact for folding, 45 degree edges) and cut out holes for wires, connections and camera hole

• Attach sensors to foam core walls with hot glue, attach camera/HOBO/batteries with duct tape/velcro, and heater/AVR with screws

• Routing and securing wires throughout box and to the holes we cut in foam core

• Structural support made of foam core attached to inner and outer boxes

• Close box by gluing sides together and sealing with aluminum tape

Expected Results

• Data to create a weather satellite that can accurately measure temperature, pressure, and humidity during altitude changes.

• There exists a correlation between humidity and altitude.

• The unique design for heating of the satellite will work more efficiently than that of a normal box shape.
