Construction is progressing well on the Smith Street Motorway and Olsen Avenue Interchange upgrade with the majority of work now complete between Parklands Drive and Kumbari Avenue. Weather permitting, the upgrade is on track to finish late 2015.
Works completed The following major works are now complete, with only finishing works such as landscaping and electrical work remaining:
construction of a new signalised intersection between Parklands Drive and Kumbari Avenue

realignment and early opening of the westbound off-ramp to Olsen Avenue (left turn only) effective Friday 19 December 2014

widening Olsen Avenue from four to six lanes between the interchange and Crestwood Drive, providing more capacity and reducing congestion
constructing a third eastbound lane on the Smith Street Motorway between the Pacific Motorway (M1) and the Olsen Avenue off-ramp, improving motorist safety and reducing congestion
resurfacing works in both directions on the Smith Street Motorway, between the M1 and Parklands Drive, to provide a smoother and more durable road surface
widening and resurfacing the eastbound on-ramp from Olsen Avenue to the Smith Street Motorway
installing additional signalised pedestrian crossings at the interchange to improve safety for pedestrians and on-road cyclists
widening the eastbound off-ramp to Olsen Avenue from three to five lanes, providing additional capacity and reducing congestion.
What to expect Motorists can expect frequently changing traffic conditions, reduced speeds, and travel time delays.
On the Smith Street Motorway:
single lane closures at various locations in both directions Sundays to Thursdays from 8pm until 5am until the end of the project
weekend lane closures in early 2015 (to be in effect from 8pm Fridays until 5am Mondays)
On Olsen Avenue between Parklands Drive and the interchange from early January until March 2014:
Southbound – the right lane will be for right turning traffic only (heading towards the M1), and the left lane will remain open for through traffic
Northbound – the right turn lane from Olsen Avenue to the Smith Street Motorway (heading towards Southport) will be closed to all traffic.
