Project SLAM SNCO Modular Accommodation, Marne Barracks, Catterick
The new SNCO building completes the Project SLAM upgrade of accommodation within Marne Barracks. The bespoke modular design accommodation block houses 80 SNCOs. The design incorporates fully integrated factory constructed modular units, with a traditional brick skin and slate roof.
The modular units were craned into position and sit on traditional foundations with specially designed reinforced mounting posts to which the ground floor modules are bolted. The spaces between the modules are filled with fire blocks and the fire precautions incorporated at the off-site modular construction stage. The individual modular units are insulated to a high
degree and incorporate stringent counter terrorist measures. The modular construction method is virtually 100% recyclable. The services are run within fully accessible ducts. The HVAC plant was installed in a dedicated module on skids for ease of installation, either during the off site modular construction process, or on site. The modular units were finished to a high degree in the factory, making the on-site construction process rapid. The three storey modular construction was delivered and craned into position during a three week period, which included several days when the wind speed was too high for the crane to operate.
The windows are bespoke insulated units designed to limit impact damage from terrorist attack. The layout includes fully accessible accommodation for wheelchair users; self contained hotel style accommodation; shared relaxation areas; kitchens; laundry and additional bathrooms with baths to augment the en-suite bathrooms with showers.
The Project SLAM construction partners included: Defence Estates, Aedas, Debut (Lend Lease and Babcock); CRGP, Arup, Arc Environmental, Cooper Fire, Caledonian Modular, Alan Wood and Partners, Billington Structures, Irvine-Whitlock, Grainger, Dove Steel Doors, Ainscough.
