Construction of the southern bridge deck was completed in May 2008. Forming one half of the whole bridge deck, 11 bridge beams weighing approximately 50 tonnes each and 37 metres in length were lifted into place over a weekend to minimise traffic disruption on South Road and ANZAC Highway. A large semi trailer transported the bridge beams one at a time, entering the underpass from South Road near Forest Street, Glandore. Recent activities have focussed on preparing for the Stage Two traffic diversion to enable construction work on the northern half of the bridge deck to commence. The main traffic and access arrangements in place from the end of June / early July 2008 include: • changes to the left turn from ANZAC Highway to head north on South Road. Traffic can use the new northbound entry ramp (slip lane) to turn left from ANZAC Highway near the Emergency Vet and merge with South Road traffic heading north, near Tennyson Street • no right turns from ANZAC Highway onto South Road (heading north and south). These restrictions have been in place for several months and will continue until the underpass is operational in mid to late 2009 • no left turn from South Road onto ANZAC Highway (heading west to Glenelg) • one left turn lane only from ANZAC Highway onto South Road for southbound traffic. These traffic restrictions have been implemented for safety reasons while construction works continue. There will be no major changes to the existing number of through lanes operating on both South Road and ANZAC Highway during the Stage 2 works. The through movements on South Road as well as the right turn movements from South Road onto ANZAC Highway will be available at most times. Occasional restrictions will be put in place to facilitate the construction works. During peak times: • three lanes into the city (inbound) and two lanes out of the city (outbound) will be maintained on ANZAC Highway • two lanes of traffic in both directions on South Road will be maintained, in addition to the right turn movements from South Road onto ANZAC Highway. An updated Stage 2 construction plan highlighting the above arrangement is shown in the centrefold of this Community Update. South east businesses access Signage showing access into the south east businesses (corner of South Road and ANZAC Highway) has been erected on all approaches to the intersection. Car parking is available for these businesses via the Roxy Centre / Blockbuster Video car park off ANZAC Highway and the Pine City and Gas Works car park off Orchard Avenue, Everard Park. What’s new?Construction of the southern bridge deck was completed in May 2008.

The main traffic and access arrangements in place from the end of June / early July 2008 include:

• changes to the left turn from ANZAC Highway to head north on South Road. Traffic can use the new northbound entry ramp (slip lane) to turn left from ANZAC Highway near the Emergency Vet and merge with South Road traffic heading north, near Tennyson Street

• no right turns from ANZAC Highway onto South Road (heading north and south). These restrictions have been in place for several months and will continue until the underpass is operational in mid to late 2009

• no left turn from South Road onto ANZAC Highway (heading west to Glenelg)

• one left turn lane only from ANZAC Highway onto South Roadforsouthboundtraffic.

During peak times: • three lanes into the city (inbound) and two lanes out of the city (outbound) will be maintained on ANZAC Highway

• two lanes of traffic in both directions on South Road will be maintained, in addition to the right turn movements from South Road onto ANZAC Highway.

An updated Stage 2 construction plan highlighting the above arrangement is shown in the centrefold of this Community Update.

Car parking is available for these businesses via the Roxy Centre / Blockbuster Video car park off ANZAC Highway and the Pine City and Gas Works car park off Orchard Avenue, Everard Park. What’s coming up over the next 3 months?Key activities to be undertaken between July and September 2008 (approximately) include:• road works on the northern side of ANZAC Highway – this will involve some changes to the existing road alignment and installation of new drainage services as well as traffic signals and street lighting• northern bridge deck construction and the installation of the remaining 9 bridge beams• completion of the southern underpass ramp excavation and works to tie in the southern section of the underpass to the existing South Road near Forest Street• commencement of excavation of the northern underpass ramp.Traffic around the intersection is expected to operate at close to normal conditions during peak times, although speed restrictions and occasional traffic diversions will continue to apply where works are in progress.AdelaideConnect will, in partnership with the department’s Traffic Management Centre, continue to monitor the construction activities to ensure that the impacts on the local community and travelling motorists are minimised. The construction of this ANZAC Highway underpass is the first step in the Government’s plan to transform South Road into a continuous non-stop route from the Southern Expressway to the Port River Expressway. On completion it will deliver measurable benefits to road users on both South Road and on ANZAC Highway.

What are some of the access changes during Stage 2?Local street accessTemporary closures of local streets along South Road will continue to be in place during Stage 2. Closures include:• Mortimer Street, Basnett Street and Garfield Avenue on a temporary basis. These streets will be reopened in their final design arrangement at a date closer to the completion in consultation with the City of West Torrens• Forest Street will remain closed permanently.Other changes include:• Tennyson Street and Eurilpa Avenue are now ‘left in and left out’ only at South Road, as per the final design arrangement.

Pedestrian access Pedestrians will be able to cross:• ANZAC Highway on the eastern side of South Road, Ashford via traffic signals at the intersection• ANZAC Highway at the pedestrian refuge west of Grosvenor Street• South Road on the southern side of ANZAC Highway via traffic signals at the intersection• South Road at the pedestrian refuge north of Norman Terrace (near the tram line) • at the traffic signals at Everard and Barwell Avenues. Temporary, fully accessible pedestrian paths have also been created on the north west side of ANZAC Highway through to Mortimer Street (near the Emergency Vet) and between Garfield Avenue (South Road end) and Tennyson Street. Normal pedestrian access along the western side of South Road is available via the footpath north of Tennyson Street.

Bus stop arrangements Changes to bus stop locations, some of which have been implemented prior to Stage 2 coming into effect, include:• bus stop 5 on the north western side of South Road near Basnett Street has been removed• bus stop 5 on the north eastern side of South Road has been shifted to the north of Tyson Street• bus stop 6A on the south western side of South Road has been shifted further south towards the tram line adjacent to the pedestrian refuge.

Cyclist access A dedicated cycle lane will be provided for cyclists heading west on ANZAC Highway through the intersection across South Road. When heading east on ANZAC Highway, cyclists will be required to use the outer left lane (of the three lanes provided) when approaching the intersection on South Road.
