DESCRIPTION

The proposed project materialized out of a personal need to learn and master Revit, to add to my repertoire of skills in architectural design programs, and to improve my marketability in the current design field. As I have seen the profession of architecture tighten in a recessive economy it seems more difficult to find and sustain work as an architectural designer -- subsequently my practice with common design programs has seen little outlet. To keep myself proficient and relevant in the design community I have had to work on projects for myself, and consequently with my latest project, I have documented it in this portfolio.

  • Proficiency:The proposed project materialized out of a personal need to learn and master Revit, to add to my repertoire of skills in architectural design programs, and to improve my mar-ketability in the current design field. As I have seen the profession of architecture tighten in a recessive economy it has seemed more difficult to find and sustain work as an archi-tectural designer -- subsequently my practice with common design programs has seen little outlet. To keep myself proficient and relevant in the design community I have had to work on projects for myself, and consequently with my latest project, I have documented it in this portfolio.

To start my process, I started with a student project I designed in my second year of ar-chitectural design education. As I received high marks in this case, this was a strong con-ceptual, academic argument for a recreational center in the small town of Manhattan, Kansas (location of Kansas State University). I chose to readdress this program because I needed to work with a project that would give me a diverse set of challenges and issues to work out physically in the building process of this digital model. I had highly developed these spaces several years ago, but the only final realized documentation I had when starting this was seven hand drafted images, and a physical model built with chip board and wood. This vagueness would be perfect to redevelop as I had a faint guideline of the program and form, but was working without re-imagining a design containing restricting details. At the outset of this Revit remodel, the project was interesting to reinvestigate, because previously I was working with a conceptual design -- issuing space and depict-ing general design parameters. But as it was my second year of academic design, the project had still more let to be desired with the documentation and rendering. From the simple but clear project I started, I was able to find more definition in my design while also creating much more descriptive documentation.

What has prevailed in this endeavor most importantly is my understanding of Revit, and BIM design in general. In addition to this knowledge, I have created 40 images, present-ed in this book, to visually expound my capabilities with the program and my resource-fulness in using it as a design tool. I propose that I can do similar work for your group, in a timely fashion, with attractive results. Last of all, I intend to create a document that not only helps me in my search for employment, but In the process one that presents a clear representation of my desire to expand the palette of good design, and divulge my fresh approach with a group of like-minded individuals.

  • Project:The All Sunny Side Recreational Center is intended as an inviting and most importantly fun place for Manhattan youth to grow, learn, and gather involved exposure to positive activities. This is a diverse community space that boosts a holistic environment encourag-ing exploration; healthy focus; and mental and physical exertion.

The activities available at Sunny Side include:

Basketball - indoor and outdoor Soccer - outdoor Football - outdoor Ultimate Frisbee - outdoor Swimming - outdoor Volleyball - indoor and outdoor Tennis - outdoor

Gymnastics and Aerobic Activities - indoor Rock Climbing - wall indoor Yoga and Basic Martial Arts - indoor

Healthy Eats Kitchen - locally grown produce after school program Farmers Market - the parking lot Wed. and Sun. Organic Childrens Garden - outdoor

Arts and Craft - general creative classes Sketching and Drawing - evening classes Watercolor and Acrylic Painting - evening classes Model and Pottery - basic 3D evening classes

After School Study and Project Center - 12 computers, tables, space, and materials for individual research or collaborative projects

Clean and healthy locker rooms and facilities

As for the site and community in which this program inhabits and interacts -- Manhattan, KS is a small college town, with sunny summers, wholesome Midwestern families and flat open land. However, outside of the university there lies a need for high quality youth facili-ties, which this development intends to address. There are also complementary amenities surrounding the location such as some baseball fields and other community land. The surrounding built environment consists mostly of residential single family housing and small shops -- plenty of people with families to invigorate the recreational center.

  • The Site consists of a two story, 38,000 sq. ft. recreational building; two exterior basketball courts; a swimming pool; a vegetable garden; a full size soccer field, and 66 vehicular parking spaces. Contextually it sits in the north west corner of a city park. The rest of the park accommodates baseball fields and open land used for county fairs and other large outdoor events. The site is surrounded by three ve-hicular roadways and is a conveniently accessible by vehicle, foot, or bike from all three sides.

  • The Form of the building along the interior space, respond to the exterior spaces and the complementary views, dimensions, and pro-grammatic influences. The two story height creates an easy pedestrian connection at each street level, while also providing a large cen-tral interior space that fully accommodates a basketball gymnasium and a climbing wall. The solid, dense base contrasts with the flying aerial roof, which creates visual interest from the exterior observer, and formally represented interior spaces.

  • On the First Level, the main space is the gymnasium that houses athletic activities such as basketball, volleyball, and rock climbing. This would be open for summer camps, evening practices, weekend games, and special events. Glass curtain walls on the east and west facades, and glass apertures in the ceiling indirectly flood the room with light and air for a energetic, indoor practicing environment that can be conditioned with passive measures when the weather cooperates.

  • On the Second Level, seven spaces share the floor. There is a congregating gallery space above the lobby with six multipurpose rooms on the north and south facing walls. These multipurpose rooms are designed to hold smaller group programs, such as small dance or exercise classes for children. They are intentionally open for adaptability within each space and vast views to the exterior and the land surrounding the building.

  • The Exterior Levels include the roof, the pool patio, and the two basketball courts. The roof creates a permeable canopy over all the interior spaces. This allows for plenty of light to indirectly infiltrate the enclosed areas, without creating unnecessary amounts of direct sun heat gain. The pool and basketball courts sit adjacent to the building with direct access to the locker rooms, and accessibility from the side walk.

  • The First Level Ceiling sits at 9 ft (lobby, kitchen, and computer room); 11 ft (coaches offices), and 13 ft (locker rooms and mechani-cal rooms) -- as the floor descends to the -4 ft basketball court. These high ceilings, with acoustical panels create a sense of more free space, less congestion, and a healthy environment for learning and playing. The lighting and HVAC systems on this level are hidden in the walls and floor to accompany the enclosed environment on this level.

  • The Second Level Ceiling vaults over the interior court, the climbing wall, and the second level congregating space. In the multipurpose rooms these coverings fly up to let in light and allow for views to the sky and surroundings. These ceilings are open to the structural beams, the electrical lighting, and mechanical systems to accentuate their presence and also to create as much height for a light, thin, blanket like canopy.

  • The Cells of the project are created by the butterfly roofs, subsequently two story spaces exist beneath them with room for adaptation. Each separate canopy of the roof, including two concrete structural walls that support them, is a cell. This establishes six cells for the whole project that are then divided up further as purpose of program is assigned to each location on the site.

  • The Cells of the project establish a structural and spatial concept that strictly assigns type of program, and functional purpose of each system in the building, but it lends adaptability in the design once the purpose is established. For instance, the number 3 cell is relegated to a small activity program on one half -- the lower level encloses the computer room and an open multipurpose art studio on top; while on the other side of the hallway the other cantilevered canopy encloses the southern half of the open second level gallery.

  • The Cells stand as T-sections when the building is cut north to south. These cells accommodate two story stacked spaces on the exterior portions or halves, and when connected in the center create a 32 ft. space for the gymnasium. In addition to the primary spaces filling the voids, the cell also dictates the location of the main circulation halls, and the placement of mechanical, plumbing and, interior light-ing systems.

  • The Cell structure is basically split in half in the vertical space -- a heavy, enclosed land bound half and a high flying open upper level. On the lower half, spaces that need more enclosure and privacy; such as the computer room, kitchen, offices, and the locker rooms, which are walled in on all four sides -- while the spaces on the upper level are open to the surrounding landscape and the Kansas sky. The hall-ways sit in the middle of the cells and with all these systems simultaneously contained in the cell, repetition for all situations is achieved.

  • The Cell structure of the large concrete walls manage the burdened support of the butterfly roofs, but also create interior enclosure for the larger spaces. These repetitious walls structurally hold four custom designed wide-flange beams that span the width of the cell; and with each wall being 3 ft. thick, they encapsulate mechanical systems in their cavities, while spatially creating an acoustical barrier to other spaces in the building.

  • The Wall Systems of each cell repeat throughout the project, creating an ease of construction, documentation, and ultimately commu-nication of the design. The enclosure consists of the cell walls and butterfly roof, the lower concrete slab/foundation, the stone veneer walls on the exterior, and the glass curtain extending up to the roof. Within these systems -- insulation, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and structure coexist to create a well conditioned usable space.

  • The Wall Systems do repeat throughout the project, but where adaptations can be made are in the sections of each cell. As long as pedestrian access is addressed, the flooring levels for each space can move in the vertical direction. For instance the gymnasium sits 4 ft. lower than the lobby and along the gradual decent the other rooms find their necessary elevations. The repetitious wall structure is then already defined with all the inherent support systems, and then conditioned spatial needs are met easily in each modified instance.

  • The Mechanical and Electrical Systems are able to navigate the whole building while creating patterned results where necessary, or supplying special conditions, such as the lobby. Here the mechanical and electrical needs are varied from the exterior spaces of the cells -- but with the open spatial nature, dictated by the cell, this space can open as an inviting initial gathering zone.

  • The Mechanical and Electrical Systems on the upper level are supplied by channels through the 8 ft. wide hallway floors, then through the cell walls, and finally brought to each area of the cell through conduits or cavities in the 3 ft. thick concrete walls. To keep the roof open and light in most cases, ducts and lighting are placed with visual prominence and accentuate the separation of the structural and mechanical systems..

  • The Structural System is also congruent with the cell design. This structure consists of large 3 ft. by 16 ft. concrete walls that reach up roughly 30 ft. These walls lift the canopy through custom formed steel wide flanges, however they also provide structural support for the cantilevered floors of the second level. Creating this structure allows for openness in the primary spaces, and then necessary partitions follow, uninhibited by the other systems.

  • The Structural System creates opportunities for diverse spaces, that can be adapted as the buildings needs change and undeniably evolve. In this case the support systems and the primary spaces share responsibilities -- dictated by the cell design, and for each need in the recreational center a space can harmoniously, purposefully and aesthetically coexist.

  • I am a young architectural designer, and currently my most guiding motives are; I have recently moved to the Linden Hills in Minneapolis, and I am currently looking to find a design position with a successful, productive, and heedful architectural firm in the Min-neapolis and St. Paul area. I am a Master of Architecture graduate, hailing from Kansas State University: College of Architecture, Planning, and Design; currently looking for entry level design employment, which I hope to be a catalyst into further architectural work and design. Recently, I was working for a local construction supply store in Austin -- named Ecowise. My involvement with this company started as I helped them realize de-signs for a new website to advertise their products and hopefully obtain more clientele. As I continued to live in Austin, I worked in their showroom and retail store -- displaying and selling many sustainable, healthy interior building materials and housewares. I was issued the role of managing the paint department, bio-compostable and paper prod-uct deliveries/sales, and warehouse inventory/management. Simultaneously I acted as a sales associate -- where I became very familiar with counter tops, cabinets, flooring materials, and various other finishes. Along with these responsibilities, there were other general experiences that have given me insight into the small scale, practical business side of design, material application, and business practices. These have been reward-ing experiences, however they were limited opportunities. I am searching for focused architectural design employment, and I am addressing you because I would like the chance to further practice my skills with your group. I pride myself in having a meticu-lous attention for detail (especially when it comes to physical model construction and hand-rendering), helping as a highly compatible and an involved working associate, and being a strong individual with desire to learn and expose myself to more.

It seems that determined thought, which leads to careful articulation of the product or scenario, can improve life. It is this phenomenon that engages us in new process and fo-cuses our insight into expanding thought. We want things -- tools, spaces, environments -- to work with greater efficiency, to be more adaptable to a variety of situations, and inherently bring health and happiness to the beings that come in contact with them. We want our external existence to complement our internal, and if we consider the natural cycle, we expect a reciprocal effect. This interaction supplements the human condition. We thrive off the development of our surroundings, and in turn the quality in which we live in proceeds. As the designer, we look to be the instigator in this process. We feed the potential, and with careful consideration create a solution to the appropriately asked questions. Realizing the truth, honesty, and beauty in our creations is not solely based on intuition or the presupposed trend. We are not creating completely a new, and we are not re-manufacturing the existing -- in totality we are elaborating on the connections.
