PROJECT-BASED INQUIRY SCIENCE Project-Based Inquiry Science (PBIScience) is a 3-year middle-school curriculum designed as 13 stand-alone units. You can arrange each year by theme: Life Science, Earth Science, or Physical Science, or you can arrange as 3 integrated years. Students Learn Like Scientists and Engineers Students develop important 21st century skills as they work collaboratively in groups and engage in rigorous science discourse. PBIScience students design investigations to generate data, judge the trustworthiness of their data, interpret the data to make claims, justify the claims they make, observe like scientists, and develop explanations. Three-Dimensional, Project-Based Learning PBIScience is based on research in the cognitive and learning sciences. It was supported through National Science Foundation (NSF) funding and consequently produced through rigorous, iterative, research-based development cycles. PBIScience merges science and engineering practices, crosscutting concepts, and core ideas and integrates them seamlessly throughout the curriculum. Big Questions and Challenges guide instruction and serve to organize the learning progressions in each unit. Total Support for Teachers Student Editions and comprehensive, educative Teacher’s Planning Guides are available in print and digital formats. The NSF-funded PBIScience CyberPD website provides total support with preparation, just-in-time support, and reflection. The PBIScience CyberPD website includes professional-development videos as well as unit walkthrough and equipment setup videos. A professional learning community provides teachers the opportunities to communicate and share with others on an ongoing basis. 44 Amogerone Crossway #7862, Greenwich, CT 06836 activatelearning.com | (646) 502-5231 | [email protected]

PROJECT-BASED INQUIRY SCIENCE™

Project-Based Inquiry Science™ (PBIScience) is a 3-year middle-school curriculum designed as 13 stand-alone units. You can arrange each year by theme: Life Science, Earth Science, or Physical Science, or you can arrange as 3 integrated years.

Students Learn Like Scientists and Engineers

• Students develop important 21st century skills as they work collaboratively in groups and engage inrigorous science discourse.

• PBIScience students design investigations to generate data, judge the trustworthiness of theirdata, interpret the data to make claims, justify the claims they make, observe like scientists, anddevelop explanations.

Three-Dimensional, Project-Based Learning

• PBIScience is based on research in the cognitive and learning sciences. It was supported throughNational Science Foundation (NSF) funding and consequently produced through rigorous, iterative,research-based development cycles.

• PBIScience merges science and engineering practices, crosscutting concepts, and core ideas andintegrates them seamlessly throughout the curriculum.

• Big Questions and Challenges guide instruction and serve to organize the learning progressions ineach unit.

Total Support for Teachers

• Student Editions and comprehensive, educative Teacher’s Planning Guides are available in printand digital formats.

• The NSF-funded PBIScience CyberPD website provides total support with preparation, just-in-timesupport, and reflection.

• The PBIScience CyberPD website includes professional-development videos as well as unitwalkthrough and equipment setup videos.

• A professional learning community provides teachers the opportunities to communicate and sharewith others on an ongoing basis.

Big Challenge or Big QuestionEach PBIScience unit is designed around a project that is presented as a Big Challenge or Big Question. The unit is sequenced to first help learners understand the project question or challenge, become interested in it, and identify the ways it is meaningful to their lives. The Big Question or Big Challenge of the unit then drives the 3-dimensional learning experiences throughout the unit.

Project BoardStudents use a Project Board to keep track of what they think they know, what they need to investigate, what they are learning, their evidence, and how what they are learning relates to the question or challenge. They incrementally add to the Project Board over the course of the unit.

Learning SetsEach Unit is composed of Learning Sets—one for each of the smaller questions that needs to be answered to answer the Big Question or address the Big Challenge. In each Learning Set, students engage in science and engineering practices as they explore the concepts they need to complete their project.

Answer the Big Question/Address the Big ChallengeAt the end of each Unit, students put everything they have learned together to answer the Big Question or address the Big Challenge.

In PBIScience Units, Engineering and Science Go Hand-in-HandThe individual units in PBIScience present three types of projects: some ask students to solve an engineering problem challenge, some ask them to address an engineering-design challenge, and some ask them to answer a driving science question.

• In engineering problem-solving units, students are presented with a realistic community scenario and a problem they need to address.

• In engineering-design units, students iteratively design, build, and test a device.• Driving-question units begin by presenting students with a complex science question about a

phenomenon that has real-world implications.
