8th Grade Reading Students - “The Boy in the Striped Pajamas” Landisville Middle School, Lancaster area

Hold video conference with Holocaust Memorial Museum (Washington, DC) to get further information on genocide

Hold video conference with Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County to speak with a survivor

Students will create a product demonstrating their understanding of what genocide is, that genocidal activity in the world persists, and what they, as individuals, can do to discourage discrimination and promote tolerance. 

This product will be in the form of a wiki that will include the following areas: Glossary, Discussion, Resources, Resolutions.

Some students (37%) felt that they would have liked more of an opportunity to interact with the videoconference site and several students noted that they needed more time in the lab to work on the wiki portion of the project

Most importantly, close to 90% of the students felt that their knowledge of the Holocaust had improved!

The Holocaust was enough; they didn’t get to modern-day genocides

Project 2 – Picture This! Fitting In, Standing Out

ESL Students will collaboratively create a design theme and an implementation plan for a mural celebrating pride in diversity and their unique culture while promoting their connectedness in the multiple communities within which they participate, e.g., cultural, school, neighborhood, etc.
