Theodore Roosevelt

• Reduced the power of the trusts. Began conservation of wildlife.

• Progressive politician Bob La Follette.

• Called “Battling’ Bob,” he was Governor of Wisconsin and later a United States Senator. As governor of Wisconsin, he promoted reforms in state government.

Jane Addams

• - founder of Hull House.

• It was the model for the Settlement House movement.

Ida Tarbell

• Her main work was an expose of the Standard Oil Trust.

• She showed how Rockefeller and his company had used unfair practices such as artificially low transportation rates and bribery to drive smaller companies out of business.

Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton

In 1869, the two formed the NWSA and in 1890, they joined with others to create the NAWSA.

Upton Sinclair

Wrote the novel “The Jungle.”

• aroused public concern for the quality & impurities in processed meats

• Resulting in the passage of federal food-inspection laws.

Lincoln Steffens

• wrote about the horrible life of the poor and the poor conditions in the tenement districts in his book “The Shame of the Cities.”

W.E.B. DuBois

• Started the NAACP

• First African American to receive a Harvard PhD

• Encouraged the participation in higher learning to challenge the white dominant culture.

Booker T. Washington

• Founded the Tuskegee Institute

• Believed that the cooperation with supportive whites was the only way to overcome racism

• Encouraged African Americans to learn a trade

Progressive Era

• Occurred in the early 20th century leading to economic, social and political reforms

Labor Union

• An organized association of workers, often in a trade or profession, formed to protect and further their rights and interests

Collective Bargaining

• Form of negotiation between the union and the employer.

Suffrage

• The right to vote.

Patronage

• Controlling by way of gifts and privileges.

Sherman Anti-Trust Act

• Prohibited monopolies.

Muckraker

• One who spreads scandals about another for their advantage
