“African Child Project” at Goethe-

Institut as a combination of

photographs and mixed material

artworks, made of repurposed

wooden panels and uses glass,

plastic bottles, pieces of cloth, and

other recycled materials.. The main

idea of the African Child Project

came from an original vision with a

focus on children and the beauty of

life. Children then and now work to

feed themselves and sacrifi ce their

education just to survive. The artists can identify with the happiness of

the children, but also with the challenges they face.

Tacitus Nana-Yabani remembers what it was like as a child for him, as he

dropped out of school and needed to fend for himself until he met mentor

Wanlov and started pursuing photography. Baba Musah Swallah is a

freelance professional artist born and raised in the community of Nima in

Accra. His mentors were Mozzay and Akirash.

children and families? Mercy Mercy is a character-driven global tale on the

catastrophic consequences of a choice made with the best intentions and

globe, from the biological parents’ new life to their children’’s experiences

in their new family.

The cargo ship MV Rozen is heading for harbor when it is boarded and

captured by pirates in the Indian Ocean. Amongst the men on board are

the seamen are taken hostage in a cynical game of life and death. With the

demand for a ransom of millions of dollars a psychological drama unfolds

between the CEO of the shipping company and the Somali pirates.

world, the end of human civilization and life on earth once we are gone.

A road movie into unknown region of the globe and mind – on an Arctic

schooner heavily armed with art and science bound for the most spectacu-

lar nature in Northeast Greenland, Manmade speed and effi ciency confront

the power of ice but no matter how far we travel and how hard we try to

fi nd answers, the ultimate confrontation is with ourselves and our transi-

ence as a species.

It began with controversy: in 1973 Pina Bausch was appointed director of

dance for the Wuppertal theatres and the form she developed in those

early years, a mixture of dance and theatre, was wholly unfamiliar. In her

performances the players did not merely dance; they spoke, sang - and

sometimes they cried or laughed too. Dance theatre evolved into a unique

genre, inspiring choreographers throughout the world and infl uencing

theatre and classical ballet too. Its global success can be attributed to the

fact that Pina Bausch made a universal need the key subject of her work:

the need for love, for intimacy and emotional security. To this end she

developed an artistic form which could incorporate highly diverse cultural

infl uences. Over the thirty-six years in which Pina Bausch shaped the

work of the Tanztheater Wuppertal, till her death in 2009, she created a

an oeuvre which casts an unerring gaze at reality, while simultaneously

giving us the courage to be true to our own wishes and desires.

Her unique ensemble, rich with varied personalities, will continue to

maintain these values in the years to come.

We set aside the month of August to celebrate and honour this great

German woman choreographer with books and fi lm screenings on some of

her works. Below are the dates for the fi lm screening. You may also visit

the Goethe-Institut Library for books on Pina Bausch.

Study and Research Opportunities in Germany

The DAAD Information Center holds a monthly Introductory Session on

Study and Research Opportunities in Germany. Participation in this

session is free of charge but mandatory prior to visiting the Information

Center for individual consultation. Anyone planning to study or do

research in Germany is welcome to attend the Introductory Session.

The Introductory Session will be held on the 1st Thursday of every

month (unless otherwise stated) between 4pm and 5.30pm at the Goethe

Institut (inner courtyard).

Pina Bausch | 1978 | 50 Min

The rhythm of a Pina Bausch piece is obsessively regular. Bursts

of violence are followed by long stillness. Bits of business are

systematically repeated, sometimes with increasing urgency but more

often with no variation at all. At every repetition, less is revealed,

and the action that looked gratuitous to begin with dissolves into

meaningless frenzy. “Café Müller,” which opened the Bausch season

and set the pattern for it, is thirty-fi ve minutes long and feels ninety;

its subject is duration, and repetition is its only device. The café--

apparently meant to resemble a real place--seems to be the canteen of

a mental hospital. A small cast of inmates gives us intermittent doses

of violent/apathetic behavior while a woman who may be a visitor

scurries noisily about in high-heeled shoes. Music from Purcell’s operas

drifts over the loudspeakers, doing its best to solemnize the goings on.

“Café Müller,” with its thin but fl ashy shtick, is a how-to-make-theatre

handbook. It enshrines the amateur’s faith in psychopathy as drama.

ARCHITECTURAL LECTURESTONES TELL STORIES IN OSU


One of Professor Dr. Ing. Henry Nii-Adziri Wellington main research topics

is the link between Ghanaian and Danish history and heritage. “Stones tell

Stories in Osu - Memories of a Host Community of the Danish Trans-Atlantic

Slave Trade” is a book based on research fi ndings obtained in 2007 after

an architectural and community history research had been conducted at

Osu, in Germany and in Denmark from 2005 to 2007 on the Danish period

in Ghana from 1665 to 1850. The research undertaken to write this book,

was motivated and inspired by a book titled “Coast of Slaves” written by

a Danish author who had tried to interpret archival materials to explain

the Danish involvement in the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade, which was

operated from Christiansborg at Osu from the 17th century to the year

1850, when the Danes sold out their interests and properties to the British

administration in the then Gold Coast.

“Stones Tell Stories at Osu” after having taken about four years to be

completed, was published and launched on 21st November, 2011 by the

SubSaharan Publishers with a Danish Government funded assistance from

the Ghana Cultural Fund.

In 2012 the Goethe-Institut together with GIZ as partners began a project

with 11 artists from two countries, Germany and Ghana. These artists

collaborated to develop various aritisic projects peculiar to Ghana. This

year this artist will travel to Germany to collaborate on another project

peculiar to Germany.

A pre-departure presentation on the various projects that will be

undertaken in Germany will be done here together with an exhibition by

the artists.

BILINGUAL ROUNDTABLE

EVERY LAST FRIDAY OF THE MONTH, 4PM-5PMThe “Tandemstammtisch” is to meet people and discuss topics that are of interest to everybody. The discussion will be in English and German. IN this way people will be addressed who enjoy speaking English or German and who have reached B1 level in both languages.
