Programs and Advising High School Completion
Need a High School Diploma? There are 3 programs available to students who are at least 17 years of age and are officially withdrawn from school. All studen 17 yearsof age must schedule a meeting with the Director prior toentering Adult Education.
I High School Credit Based Diploma (HSCDP) In the High School Credit Diploma program students
fulfilling all core and elective requirements, students
earn academic credit which are added to any credits they already earned previously in high school. Upon

200 Points are required to receive a Diploma, which is awarded by the Bridgeport Public Schools.
Bridgeport Adult Education requires students to earn 40 credits in English, 30 credits in Mathematics, 30 credits in Social Studies, 20 credits in Science, 10 credits in Tech Ed or Art, and 70 elective credits.

Continue… I High School Credit Diploma Program CDPon Table of Contents After meeting with one of our counselors who will review your existing credits, a planned program will be outlined for you so that you can fulfill all requirements and earn a high school diploma. Credit Diploma classes are offered at Central High School in the evening, from 6:30 P.M. to 8:1 P.M. Each class is held for two nights, Monday & Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday. Students must attend a minimum of 48 hours in each subject area class in order to receive credit for a course. We offer on-line classes for students using

It is given both English and Spanish. in All students take a placement test to determine their appropriate class level. Classes are available at all levels. You are eligible to take the official State GED Exam if you are 17/18 years of age and officially withdrawn from school for at least 6 months or if your class has graduated. If you are 17 years old, you must submit a withdrawal form signed by a parent or guardian.
Those who pass the GED test are awarded a Connecticut State High School Diploma. Day classes are held at the Adult Learning Cen-ter located at 418 Kossuth Street, Monday-Thursday and evening classes are held at Central High School, Monday-Thursday.

General Educational Development (GED®) Test Accommodations Accommodations for the GED® test are available for qualifi ed individuals with a disability. III National External Diploma (NEDP) The National External Diploma Program NEDP is a High School diploma program for adults who qualify and have acquired their academic skills through life and work experiences and demonstrate what they have learned. NEDP measures academic and life skills, such as Reading, Critical Thinking, Oral Communications, Mathematics, Writing, Self Awareness, Consumer Awareness, Occupational Awareness, Scientific Awareness, and Social Awareness. The NEDP is offered by our educational partners, Literacy Volunteers of Southeastern Fairfield County in partnership with the Bridgeport Public Library, and the Mercy Learning Center (a women’s ONLY program). Candidates work independently while maintaining weekly appointments with their DP advisor/assessor. Diplomas are issued by the Bridgeport Adult Education Department.

IV Adult Basic Education (ABE) Adult Basic Education (ABE) classes are offered for adults who wish to improve their basic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics. Classes are offered in various locations at different times during the day and evening. See page 14 for specific times, locations, and registration informa-tion. V English for Speakers of Other Languages This department offers ESL classes to students whose primary language is not English. Courses range from introductory to advanced levels and are designed to improve reading, writing, listening, speaking, and life skills. The use of technology is an integral part of our program. Students are given a placement test to determine ability level.
Integrates Life Skills and Basic Skills. Listening, writing, speaking and reading skills are taught. Weekly interactive computer instruction.

VI Citizenship This course prepares students for the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) exam and interview of U.S. History.
Students must be assessed at Intermediate level or higher.
Prepare to become a US Citizen by studying for the US Naturalization Interview and Test. Course covers US History, Government and Civics.
Must be able to read, write and speak English to pass the test.

English as a Second Language (ESL)Classes are off ered in four instructional levels: Survival, Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced. Students are placed according to their ability level. A Placement test is given to assess students’ level. Th ese courses are designed to strengthen the students’basic math, reading comprehension, and grammar skills.
GED Students will focus on improving their skills in the four subjects tested on the official GED exam: math, social studies, science, language arts. These classes are offered in English and Spanish. GED Tutorial Designed for those students who need additional help in Writing and Math. This class is offered by appoint-ment and space is limited. Citizenship This course prepares students for the United States Citizenship Test. Content includes U.S. History, Gov-ernment, and English Language Skills.

Enrichment and Elective Computer Courses: Microsoft Office Basics for Beginners & Keyboarding In this class you will learn keyboarding and the ba-sics of Microsoft Office. Toolbar functions are ex-plained and students learn how to use Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher. Some of the topics on Word will include creating, saving, ed-iting and printing a basic document. You will be in-troduced to Excel and PowerPoint. The basics of Microsoft Publisher will also be explored. 6:30-8:15 Based on enrollment Days TBD Microsoft Office Advanced This course is ideal for those with basic knowledge of Microsoft Office products who want to extend their knowledge & skills beyond creating simple Excel workbooks, Word documents, PowerPoint presentations and Publisher files. Introduction to Computers This class is intended for those who have very limited, or no knowledge of computers. Participants will gain knowledge on undhardware and software, Intro to WindowsXP, working with Windows programs including file & folder creation and how to create, edit & save a docu-ment. There will be hands-on exercises which cover working with Windows, managing files using My Computer, working with multiple programs, changing desktop properties, and more. Based on enrollment Introduction to the Graphics Microsoft Office This class covers basic skills and terminology related to Internet Explorer 8 and how to search for information on the Web using search engines; learn the basics of online security and how you can protect yourself. New to Bridgeport Adult Education! Online Credit Diploma Courses through
Learning Online CDP courses are offered at Central High School on Saturdays from 9 A.M. to 12:00 P. M. This is an ideal option for those students who are computer literate and seek to work independently to earn credits at their own pace. In this program, students are monitored by certified instructors. Those enrolled in online courses have the ability, and are encouraged, to continue to work in-dependently at home, or elsewhere, as long as a com-puter with Internet access is available. This is a high demand program and spots are limited, so if you think this may be a good fit for you, please speak to a guidance counselor as soon as possible.
