Anne Morrow Lindbergh:Youll Have the Sky

It was a slow-moving devastating crisis that changedAmerica forever. More than forty years agoas a resultof the complicated tale of a criminal conspiracy to coverup misdeeds by President Nixon and his top advisers

there was a sense that thegovernment was in dangerof collapsing under theweight of the scandal. From 1972 to 1974 theWatergate scandal was fre-quently a part of The DickCavett Show. In fact, Cavettwas at the forefront of na-

tional TV coverage, interviewing nearly every majorWatergate figure as the crisis unfolded. Even non-politi-cal guests expressed their opinions about Watergate onthe show.

Dick Cavetts Watergate documents the scandal inthe words of the people who lived it: from the botchedburglary at the Democratic National Headquarters; to themust-see TV of the daily Congressional Watergate hear-ings; to the on-going behind-the-scenes battle betweenthe White House and The Dick Cavett Show; culminat-ing with the resignation of the President of the UnitedStates on August 9th, 1974.

Dick Cavetts Watergate can be seen on 3-2 Sunday,the 9th at 6:00 p.m., Sunday, the 16th at 10:00 a.m. and11:00 p.m., and Monday, the 31st at 9:00 p.m. On 3-1, itairs Tuesday, the 25th at 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday, the26th at 7:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Nowhere is the human toll ofSyrias ongoing civil war morebrutally manifest than in thelives of Aleppos White Hel-metsfirst responders to thedevastating bombing and ter-rorist attacks that have pushedthis city to the brink of col-lapse. Volunteers Khaled,Mahmoud, and Subhi rush to-ward bomb sites while others

run away. They search through collapsed buildings for the livingand dead. Contending with fatigue, dwindling ranks, and concernsfor their families safety, they must decide whether to stay or to fleea city in ruins.

Winner of the Grand Jury Documentary prize at the SundanceFilm Festival, Last Men in Aleppo on P.O.V. is a breathtakingworka searing example of boots-on-the-ground reporting and anunforgettable portrait of reluctant heroes. Its a patchwork of reso-nant momentssome horrifying (pulling lifeless infants from therubble), others improbably hopeful (playing a makeshift soccergame, building a fishpond, driving kids to a playground during aceasefire). Together they are a testament to mankinds capacity forunspeakable atrocity and an ode to courage and compassion.

Last Men in Aleppo on P.O.V. will be broadcast Monday, the10th at 9:00 p.m. On 3-1, it can be seen Sunday, the 16th at 9:00 p.m.

Syrias Arab Spring, like other similar move-ments in the region, began with hope. In early2011, autocratic governments throughout theMiddle East and North Africa seemed to be onthe verge of receding peacefully, and Syrian pro-testors massed to demonstrate against the regimeof President Bashar Al-Assad. The uprisingquickly gave way to conflict, however, and by2016 the Syrian civil war had claimed 470,000 livesand displaced 11 million people.

The new documentary The War Show onP.O.V. focuses on some of the idealists who joined the early Syrianresistancea close-knit group of millennials who like listening toclassic rock, hanging out on the beach, and organizing anti-Assadprotests.

The War Show begins in 2011. Civil war has not yet engulfedSyria, and activists demonstrate peacefully. In one early scene, aboisterous group of protesters sing and chant anti-Assad slogans.Muslims and Christians, freedom for all! they cry.

A shattering portrait of a country engulfed in tragedy, the filmdepicts the ongoing toll the conflict has taken on Syria. It does notdwell on graphic images of blood and death, but instead aims togive a voice to a small group of nonviolent young men and womenand their dreams of freedom.

The War Show on P.O.V. airs on 3-2 Monday, the 3rd at 9:00p.m. On 3-1, it can be seen Sunday, the 9th at 9:30 p.m.

At a time when train travel to the NationalParks was only for the wealthy, Paving the Way:The National Park-to-Park Highway, a two-parthistorical documentary, follows the convergenceof U.S. Land being set aside for all people, thedevelopment of the autos for the everyman, and the need to escape the drone of WWI and the 1918 flu pandemic. It was at this time, when the roads were barely paved, that 12 intrepid motorists embarked upon the 1920 inaugu-ral tour of the National Park-to-Park Highway.

Traveling 5,000 miles over 76 days, these individuals explore the idea of what it meansto See America First while touring in the western United States, instead of visiting theirancestry in war torn Europe. In Paving the Way, part two, tour members are faced with thedecision to turn back or journey on. With some of the most magnificent vistas still ahead, they learn what it really means to be road weary, but at the same time find the pure joy ofa true American experience The Road Trip.

The National Park-to-Park Highway consisted of a five thousand mile loop, from Den-ver to Rocky Mountain, Yellowstone, Glacier, Mt. Rainier, Crater Lake, Lassen Volcanic,Yosemite, General Grant (now Kings Canyon), Sequoia, Zion, Grand Canyon, Mesa Verde, and back to Denver.

The film includes breathtaking cinematography from the American Westgiant for-ests, sweeping plains, towering mountains, and shimmering deserts, echoed in the archi-val photographs of the 1920 tour.

Paving the Way: The National Park-to-Park Highway airs on 3-2 Sundays at 11:00p.m. beginning the 2nd and Sundays at 10:00 a.m. beginning the 23rd. On 3-1, it will bebroadcast Mondays at 7:00 p.m. beginning the 3rd and Tuesdays at 8:00 a.m. and 3:00p.m. beginning the 4th.

Over three days in 1863, war-weary Unionand Confederate soldiers met at a backwaterPennsylvania crossroads to decide the fateof the nation. George Meades Union armydefeated Robert E. Lees Confederate army. The Gettysburg Story tells the epic tale of thebloodiest battle ever fought on American soiland the greatest man-made disaster in Ameri-can history. The stories of characters who ex-perience the battle come alive through dy-namic, innovative imagery that captures thehistoric battleground as you have never seenit before.

The documentary recounts the pivotalevents and intimate stories from the iconicCivil War battle immortalized in LincolnsGettysburg Address. Cutting-edge cinema-tography techniques reveal the grand scaleof the 6,000-acre battlefield, including the leg-endary sites of Little Round Top, Devils Den,The Railroad Cut, Cemetery Ridge, and thefields of Picketts Charge.

The Gettysburg Story airs on 3-2 Tuesday,the 25th at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, the 30th at6:00 p.m. On 3-1, it airs Monday, the 24th at7:00 p.m. and Tuesday, the 25th at 8:00 a.m.and 3:00 p.m.

Music Director Emeritus James Levineconducts an extraordinary ensemble inMozarts Idomeneoa story of love andvengeance following the Trojan WaronGreat Performances at the Met. Long ne-glected along with other works of its era,Idomeneo now holds a firm place in therepertoire as the first of Mozarts operaticmasterpieces. The New York Times pro-claimed the production as The Met Operaat its best.

The opera, set on the island of Crete, pre-miered at the Court Theater (now theCuvilliés Theater) in Munich in 1781. Likemany stories from Greek myth, Idomeneoexplores the motivations and emotions ofhumans whose fates seem beyond their owncontrol. The opera casts these issues withinthe framework of the opera seria genre, astylized format popular in the 18th century thatis characterized by a succession of arias andrecitatives and a cast of noble characters.

Tenor Matthew Polenzani sings the titlerole of the King of Crete, with mezzo-sopranoAlice Coote in the trouser role of his nobleson Idamante, soprano Elza van den Heeveras Elettra, and soprano Nadine Sierra as Ilia.

Idomeneo on Great Performances atthe Met will be broadcast on 3-2 Sunday,30th at 12:30 p.m. On 3-1, it can be seen Sun-day, the 16th at 2:00 p.m.
