The global cyberwar is heating up, and the stakes are no longerlimited to the virtual world of computers. Now, sophisticated cyberweapons unleashed via the Internet can inflict physical damage—destroying control systems that regulate everything from food fac-tories, gas pipelines, power plants, and chemical facilities to theelevators in our buildings.

It may seem farfetched that a computer program can wreak de-struction from a distance. But the United States is investing billionsof dollars in this new form of warfare—and we’re not alone. Alliesand enemies alike are rushing to develop these weapons. But whatwill this new arms race mean for our future? Will it make the U.S.more vulnerable to cyber attacks and retaliation? Nova pulls backthe curtain on a top-secret world to examine a chilling new realityin “CyberWar Threat.”

In this gripping new documentary, Nova gains unprecedented ac-cess to the entire collection of NSA (National Security Agency) top-secret archives taken by former cyber warrior, Edward Snowden, including hundreds of thousands of documents not yet released. They detail how the United States, its allies and its enemies are allsearching for offensive cyber weapons and how America’s quest fordominance may inadvertently be putting the US at risk.

Featuring a one-of-a-kind interview with Edward Snowden aswell as former NSA employees, leading cyber-security specialists, defense experts and government officials, pioneers in cryptology, and investigative journalists who have probed the murky realm ofcriminal and strategic hacking, “CyberWar Threat” takes viewersaround the globe to explore the invention of this new technology-driven mode of warfare and some of the actual cases in which it hasbeen used to attack real targets. The film also reveals, throughNSA’s own documents, how cyber attacks may unfold and howdifficult they will be to defend.

In the past, the world was largely dependent on an infrastruc-ture of hardwires linking switches to equipment and devices. Thencame the Internet, at first simply a new means of peaceful commu-nication. Now the Internet has also become a massive industrialswitch, enabling global critical infrastructures to be remotely con-trolled, modernizing everything from water purification systems tothe national electrical grids. But those advances come with a risk:the possibility for anyone with a laptop, and the right set of instruc-tions, to penetrate the porous web of signals that link these systemstogether.

“CyberWar Threat” outlines the growth of the cyber offensivein the United States. The public is already aware of controversialeavesdropping and surveillance abilities by the NSA and other gov-ernment agencies. Today, the NSA—the country’s largest, mostpowerful, and most secret intelligence agency—is also already us-ing the Internet as a weapons delivery system for a new type ofbattle. From a series of leaks and a few unintended consequences, the once-hidden cyberwar being waged by the NSA is coming intofull view.

The film explores the risks involved in using this new technol-ogy. In pursuit of dominance in the virtual battlefield, the UnitedStates is seen to have the overwhelming advantage—but that ad-vantage could open the country up to attacks. In cyber warfare, thepath of destruction can potentially lead right back to the country that

sent the “malware,” or hidden computer viruses, and a virtual at-tack can often “blowback,” resulting in either retaliation or infect-ing the attacker as well as the target.

In one case study on malicious software, Nova dissects the no-torious Stuxnet software worm, originally developed by the CIA andimplanted with Israel’s assistance in an Iranian nuclear enrichmentfacility. Stuxnet was designed to destroy the Iranian centrifuges, and may have delayed Iran’s bomb program and forestalled an Is-raeli attack. However, the self-replicating virus escaped and endedup infecting more than 100,000 computers worldwide. Nova meetswith industrial control systems security expert Ralph Langner, who, with his team of cyber security researchers, was able to reverseengineer Stuxnet, determining that the virus was a military-gradecyber weapon, and unearthing clues tracing its provenance back toits creators, the U.S. government and Israel.

Because of the information revealed in documents leaked bySnowden, countries around the world now know the extent of theNSA’s eavesdropping and secret planting of malware in their sys-tems, and some are beginning to fight back. As the most Internet-connected country on earth, the United States is also the most vul-nerable.

“CyberWar Threat” on Nova airs Wednesday, the 14th at 8:00p.m., Saturday, the 17th at 10:00 p.m., and Sunday, the 18thlatenight at 12:00 midnight. On HD3-1, it airs Friday, the 16th at8:00 p.m. and Saturday, the 17th at 11:00 p.m.

CYBERWAR THREAT

In 1948, a British pilot serving in Iraq acquired a clay tablet withan intriguing, 3,700 year-old inscription. The ancient writing tellsthe story of how the god Enki warns a Sumerian king named Atram-Hasis of a future flood that will destroy mankind; Enki gives himinstructions for building a boat to save his family and livestock. Ifthat sounds like a familiar tale, it’s because this was one of severalancient flood traditions that, centuries later, would inspire the bib-lical story of Noah. But the tablet’s inscription describes a boat verydifferent from the traditional image of the Ark—it’s said to be cir-cular and made of reeds. Is this nothing more than a fanciful myth?Or could such a reed boat have carried Atram-Hasis’ family of morethan one hundred and his many animals?

In “Secrets of Noah’s Ark” on Nova, a team of historians andexpert boat builders investigates this fascinating flood legend andsets out to rebuild a tantalizing, ancient forerunner of the Ark.

“Secrets of Noah’s Ark” on Nova will be broadcast Wednesday,the 7th at 8:00 p.m., Saturday, the 10th at 10:00 p.m., and Sunday,the 11th latenight at 12:00 midnight. On HD3-1, it can be seen Fri-day, the 9th at 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, the 10th at 11:00 p.m.

The Widower is a three-part drama based on the true storyof the charming Malcolm Webster, whose crimes led to thelongest criminal trial of a single accused person in Scottishlegal history.

The Widower tells the story of real-life convicted mur-derer Malcolm Webster, a seemingly mild-mannered malenurse who, over a 13-year period, set about poisoning andmurdering his first wife, attempting to do the same to his sec-ond wife, and moving on to “take care” of his third fiancée.Reece Shearsmith is eerily brilliant in his portrayal as Websterwith Sheridan Smith starring as Webster’s first wife, ClaireMorris.

The Widower airs Sundays at 9:00 p.m. beginning the 4th.On HD3-1, it can be seen Sundays at 10:00 p.m. beginningthe 4th and repeats Mondays at 6:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

At the heart of a rural Englishvillage on the verge of the SecondWorld War, a diverse group ofwomen with personal struggles, conflicting views, and a sharedmission forge a community thatwill inspire their finest hour. Sepa-rated from husbands, fathers, sons, and brothers for years at a time—some permanently—they findthemselves under extraordinarypressures in a rapidly fragmenting world. Samantha Bond (Downton Abbey)stars in the moving wartime drama “Home Fires,” which airs in six inspir-ing episodes on Masterpiece. The series is based on Jambusters, JulieSummers’ history of Britain’s Women’s Institute.

In August 1939, war with Germany is all but certain. While citizensof the isolated village of Great Paxford each face the prospect of war intheir own way, all agree that they must do everything they can to hold theirvillage—and their nation—together. But when the value of the largelysocial group, The Women’s Institute, is called into question, forward-thinking Frances Barden (Bond) and snobbish Joyce Cameron (FrancescaAnnis) clash over the fate of the Institute and the roles its members canplay, far from the front.

“Home Fires” on Masterpiece will be broadcast Sundays at 7:00 p.m.and 10:00 p.m. beginning the 4th. On HD3-1, it airs Mondays at 8:00 a.m.and 3:00 p.m. beginning the 5th.

The tale of the Trojan Horse is one of themost captivating stories in Greek mythol-ogy. Immortalized in the literary blockbust-ers of Homer and Virgil, it features some ofthe most famous faces in Greek legend, fromHelen of Troy to Aphrodite and Achilles.Since the 19th-century discovery of the siteof Troy in modern-day Turkey, historianshave searched tirelessly for evidence of areal Trojan War, Troy’s demise, and thetruth behind this world famous myth.

Now, archaeological evidence is mount-ing that suggests a Trojan War did indeedhappen. What’s more, the city’s defenseswere so impenetrable that some historiansare asking whether the Trojan Horse—gen-erally thought to have been a myth—couldactually explain how the enemy got insidethe walls.

“The Real Trojan Horse” on Secrets ofthe Dead explores how discoveries ofcharred bones and arrowheads point toward

Bram Stoker penned his gothic horror“Dracula” in 1887 and popularized the mod-ern vampire myth—but evidence now pointsto those myths originating in England, notEastern Europe as many believe. Unex-plained burials, identified as “deviant” and“cursed” by their contemporaries, were de-tailed in Stoker’s original research notes anddrafts, discovered by his great-grandson inthe family archive.

In “Vampire Legend” on Secrets of theDead, Oxford professor John Blair followsclues in medieval burials in England thatmay offer insight into physiological reasonsfor the formation of the myths. The caseshint at a deeply-held belief that the deadcould rise and bring fear to the living, a be-lief that predates the Eastern European leg-end and is forcing a reexamination of mod-ern vampire lore.

“Vampire Legend” on Secrets of theDead will be broadcast Tuesday, the 27th at8:00 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 1st at 6:00 p.m.On HD3-1, it can be seen Saturday, the 31stat 9:00 p.m.

a violent showdown around 1200 BC. It ex-poses the true scale of Troy’s defenses andsupplies, and examines evidence that dis-counts theories of an earthquake or siegemachine weakening Troy’s defenses. Thefilm also explores the real possibility that aTrojan Horse could have been used to takeTroy.

Historical engineers, using ancientrecords as a guide, rebuild a scientifically-sound Trojan Horse through stunning com-puter modeling—examining just how itmight have tricked Troy into defeat.

“The Real Trojan Horse” on Secrets ofthe Dead can be seen Tuesday, the 13th at8:00 p.m. and Sunday, the 18th at 10:00 a.m.and 6:00 p.m. On HD3-1, it airs Tuesday,the 13th at 9:00 p.m. and Wednesday, the14th at 7:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Sir David Attenborough exploresthe evolution of why “Big BirdsCan’t Fly” on Nature. When mostpeople think of birds, what commonattributes typically come to mind? Many will cite a bird’s ability to fly,

sing, and use its feathered wings to take flight. So it may seem a bitstrange that included in the more than 10,000 species of birds in theworld today is a group that literally cannot fly or sing, and whose wingsare more fluff than feather. These are the ratites: the ostrich, emu, rhea, kiwi, and cassowary. How and why these birds abandoned flight haspuzzled scientists since Darwin’s time, but as this program shows,DNA and dedicated research are helping to solve these mysteries.

Attenborough explains how birds evolved and continue to sur-vive despite their inability to soar. He calls ratites the “Flintstonesof the bird world” because their lineage can be traced back to theage of the dinosaur. Surprisingly, DNA from the bones of extinctratites compared with that of today’s flightless birds shows theircommon ancestors actually could fly. But when dinosaurs becameextinct 66 million years ago, these ancient birds no longer neededto take flight from predators.

With newly unimpeded access to food, their size increased —their legs grew long and strong, their bodies large and fat. Eventu-ally, they became excellent walkers and runners, but they’d alsobecome too heavy to fly. Each of them evolved to this state com-pletely independent of one other, on entirely different continentsin the southern hemisphere.

“Big Birds Can’t Fly” on Nature airs Wednesday, the 7th at 7:00p.m. and Saturday, the 10th at 11:00 p.m. On HD3-1, it airsWednesday, the 7th at 9:00 p.m. and Thursday, the 8th at 6:00 a.m.and 1:00 p.m.

The groundbreaking musical “Show Boat” rede-fined entertainment and changed the face of Americantheater. Spanning the years from 1880 to 1927, JeromeKern and Oscar Hammerstein II’s lyrical masterpiececoncerns the lives, loves, and heartbreaks of three gen-erations of show folk on the Mississippi River, in Chi-cago, and on Broadway.

The musical’s impact remains unparalleled, ad-dressing racial prejudice, and introducing a bi-racialcast to Broadway at its premiere while also pointing theway toward a new synthesis between music and spec-tacle.

The two and one-half hour production of “Kern &Hammerstein’s Show Boat” on Live From Lincoln Center features the New York Phil-harmonic and an all-star cast led by Vanessa Williams and Downton Abbey’s JulianOvenden, as well as Norm Lewis and Lauren Worsham.

“Kern & Hammerstein’s Show Boat” on Live From Lincoln Center airs Friday, the16th at 9:00 p.m. On HD3-1, it airs Saturday, the 17th at 1:00 a.m.

Big Birds Can’t FlyIronically, every dead elephant with its ivory intact is a reason

to celebrate. It means an elephant died of natural causes, not bul-lets, snares, or poison, and a soul was allowed to be celebrated andmourned by its herd.

In “Soul of the Elephant” on Nature, award-winning filmmak-ers Dereck and Beverly Joubert start with the remains of two bullelephants and, through a series of key flashbacks, look at the livesthey would have led, the dramas they may have seen, their great mi-grations for water with their families, and their encounters with li-ons and hyenas. This film, shot over two years, will be an intimatelook at elephants through the lens of perhaps the greatest storytell-ers of natural history.

“Soul of the Elephant” on Nature airs Wednesday, the 14th at7:00 p.m. and Saturday, the 17th at 11:00 p.m. On HD3-1, it airsWednesday, the 14th at 9:00 p.m. and Thursday, the 15th at 6:00 a.m.and 1:00 p.m.

From the award-winning team that brought us “Earthflight” and“Penguins: Spy in the Huddle” comes a revolutionary look at ourpets. Our pets may seem familiar but they exist alongside us in asecret world of wild behavior and natural abilities that we hardlyrecognize.

“Pets: Wild at Heart” on Nature is a two-part series that exploresthis parallel existence with all the techniques that have been per-fected in past “spy” shows, including HD spy cameras, night visioncameras, drones, miniature on-board cameras, and digital high-speed cameras.

The series examines the secret worlds of dogs, cats, kittens, rab-bits, hamsters, Camargue horses, and others.

“Pets: Wild at Heart” on Nature airs Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m.beginning the 21st and Saturdays at 11:00 p.m. beginning the 24th.On HD3-1, it airs Wednesdays at 9:00 p.m. beginning the 21st andThursdays at 6:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. beginning the 22nd.

While technology and the Internet changed the rest of our world a long time ago,America’s schools have lagged behind. Now, federal and state governments are spendingbillions to get our classrooms up to speed, and teachers everywhere are wrestling with thisnew challenge. With trillions of dollars to be made in the education industry, it’s difficultto separate the hype from reality. Are tablets, laptops, smart phones, virtual teachers, andcyber schools actually translating into greater success for students?

That’s the question PBS education correspondent John Merrow sets out to answer inSchool Sleuth: The Case of the Wired Classroom. Going inside schools in California,Arizona, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, and elsewhere reveals the mixed resultsstudents and teachers are experiencing across the country. Merrow learns that our ‘digitaldivide’ is growing wider; more surprising, he discovers that even the advantaged are at adisadvantage, because more than 75 percent of students do not have access to high-speedInternet in school, and most teachers have not been trained in how to use the technologythey already have.

Merrow visits so-called “cyber schools,” where more than 300,000 kids take all theirclasses online at home. One of the most common problems for these students is just get-ting the technology to work. He also takes viewers inside a school where students spendhalf their day on the computer, raising every parent’s question, “How much screen time istoo much?”

It is noted that 70 percent of students go to for-profit charter schools, backed by com-panies like K12, whose online schools often rank at the very bottom compared to brick-and-mortar and other virtual schools. As the film shows students participating in their onlineclasses by entering questions and answers in a chat box in the corner of their computerscreens, one teacher comments that most of her students did not graduate last year.

Merrow also takes time to highlight many schools and online programs that have inte-grated technology into the classroom with amazing and inspiring results.

School Sleuth: The Case of the Wired Classroom airs Saturday, the 3rd at 10:00 p.m.,Sunday, the 4th latenight at 12:00 midnight, and Tuesday, the 20th at 10:00 p.m. On HD3-1,it airs Monday, the 12th at 11:00 a.m.

The Brain, hosted by Dr. David Eagleman, neuroscientist and New York Times best-sellingauthor, reveals the true story of how our brainscreate the rich and beautiful world we all takefor granted. The six-part series exposes the in-ner workings of the brain and takes viewers ona visually spectacular journey into why they feeland think the things they do.

In The Brain, Eagleman asks profound ques-tions like, “What is reality? Who is in control? What makes me? and Why do I need you? Healso looks at the darker side of human behav-ior, and reveals that the modern study of thebrain offers us special insight into why we cancommit terrible acts of group on group violence, even genocide.

The Brain is a thought-provoking, eye-open-ing series. After watching, you won’t be able tolook at your world in quite the same way again.

The Brain airs Wednesdays at 9:00 p.m. be-ginning the 14th. On HD3-1, it airs Wednesdaysat 7:00 p.m. beginning the 14th and repeatsThursdays at 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

“Billy Elliot the Musical Live,” the long-running hit both on Broadway and inLondon’s West End (where it is still playing), comes to GREAT PERFORMANCES.The acclaimed three-hour musical airs as part of the PBS Arts Fall Festival.

Recorded at the show’s West End home at the Victoria Palace Theatre, the show hasbeen dazzling audiences in London since it opened in 2005, and has gone on to capti-vate audiences across five continents, winning more than 80 theater awards globally, including 10 Tony Awards®.

Set in a mining town in the north of England against the background of the 1984-85 miners’ strike, “Billy Elliot” is the inspirational story of a young boy’s struggleagainst the odds to make his dream come true. Billy (Elliott Hanna, age 11) stumblesout of the boxing ring and into a ballet class where he discovers a passion for dancethat inspires his family and whole community and changes his life forever.
