Wonders of Mexico, a three-part series, showcases the countrys natural fiesta ofcolor and life, born out of its unique combi-nation of geology, geography, and weather.Told through the lives of wildlife and people, this is the definitive story of Mexico.

In Mexicos far south lies an unusual peninsula: the Yucatan.Swathed in a forest covering 50,000 square miles, this land was onceruled by the mighty Maya civilization. This immense peninsula isactually a giant slab of porous limestone, meaning water is quicklysucked underground. For half the year virtually no rain falls.

The ruins and ancient cultivated gardens of the spectacular Mayatemple of Calakmul was once home to over 50,000 people. But howdid such a great civilization arise without a river? Don Roque, amayan descendent, reveals the key to the success of his ancientancestors: the natural well or cenote. In his garden is one of 8,000cenotes scattered across the peninsula.

The massive underground network of rivers and caves providethe perfect roosting habitat for bats. None are more dramatic thanEl Volcan de los Murcielagosthe bat volcano, that erupts ev-ery evening with more than 3 million bats.

Like any rivers, the Yucatans underground rivers flow towardsthe sea. At the coast, a colony of Caribbean flamingos raises their15,000 new chicks. With so much food, these flamingos grow morecolorful than any of their kind.

Mexico is dominated by the Sierra Madre, or Mother Moun-tains. The grandest mountain vistas of all are found in the north-west. The Copper Canyon covers 25,000 square miles and is hometo the Rarámuri. To navigate the difficult terrain, theyve becomeremarkable long distance runners.

In the ancient Sierra Gorda Mountains, the temperate and tropi-cal collide. Here we find the most beguiling of flowers: orchids. Tospread their pollen they rely on the mesmerizing orchid bee.

Central Mexico is one of the most volcanic places on Earth, withmore than 20 active volcanoes. Their ash helps fertilize the soils, making this one of the most productive regions of the country. Per-haps the most famous mountain product is tequila, made from theblue agave plant. We meet a 16-year-old agave farmer, a jimador.

Some of Mexicos mountain worlds are so inviting they compelcreatures to journey thousands of miles to reach them. Every yearmillions of monarch butterflies overwinter in the fir forests of cen-tral Mexico. For thousands of years, many Mexicans believe thesebutterflies to be the spirits of the dead. Their arrival in winter coin-cides with Mexicos most spectacular festival, the Day of the Dead.

Mexicos prairies are the birthplace of an iconic way of life. Inthe 16th century, the Spanish brought cattle and horses here. Thevaquero, or cowboy, was born. To protect the fragile vegetation, pioneering ranchers keep their herds on the move, benefitting oneof Mexicos rarest birds. Today, only five breeding pairs ofAplomado falcons survive in Northern Mexico.

The land beyond the prairies is starved for rain and is thecountrys driest region. This area of Northern Mexico is dominatedby two great deserts: the Sonoran and Chihuahuan, the latter ofwhich is the second largest desert in North America. Summer tem-peratures reach 113°F, but one plant copes well: the creosote bush.

The Outback, a spectacular adventure in three parts, exploresAustralias Kimberley region in North West Australia, a vast, rug-ged, and remote area that boasts some of the most diverse wilder-ness, and tough characters, in existence.

As large as California, Kimberley has a population of only about40,000 people. In a landscape so ancient that it predates life on theplanet , the animals are superbly adapted to the harsh and beautifulextremes of Outback Australia.

Travel with these creatures as they work to survive the dramaticwet and dry seasons that punctuate this unique wilderness. Fromits hot red heart, to its spectacular and pristine coastline, a particu-lar breed of people also journey through this land. This is theirstorypast and present, tough and tender.

The Outback airs on 3-2 Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. beginning the1st and Saturdays at 11:00 p.m. beginning the 4th. On 3-1, it airsWednesdays at 9:00 p.m. beginning the 1st, Thursdays at 2:00 p.m.beginning the 2nd, and Mondays at 6:00 a.m. beginning the 6th.

The creosote bush grasshopper eats nothing elsethe only grass-hopper in the world that relies on one plant.

To the west, the dry forests covering the Sierra MadreOccidentalis are a refuge for a plant with the hottest reputation. Wildchillies called chiltepin are harvested here. This mother of all chil-lies was first domesticated in Mexico over 6,000 years ago.

On the western edge of the Sonoran desert, El Pinacate is one ofthe hottest places on earth. Temperatures reach 132°F and it goesyears without rain, even though it borders the sea. Just offshore isIsla San Pedro Martir, a desert island thats home to the remarkableside blotched lizard. It only survives here thanks to the fish scrapsleft in the nests of visiting sea birds. Proof that if you can find away, you can thrive in Mexicos Burning North.

Wonders of Mexico can be seen on 3-2 Wednesdays at 8:00 p.m.beginning the 1st and Sundays at 10:00 p.m. beginning the 12th. On3-1, it airs Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. beginning the 1st and Thurs-days at 7:00 a.m. beginning the 2nd.
