EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAM
The Beginnings of Expeditionary LearningExpeditionary Learning - it's one of the many things that makes Norfolk Christian
unique. More than hands-on, these interactive, year-long expeditions teach children how their world is masterfully put together by our Creator and that God has a big
purpose for them in it. Our classrooms are alive with discovery, inquiry, critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration. Preschoolers are empowered as
they learn the important role they have in caring for God's world and His people and are excited when they see how their actions impact our school and local communities.
College-preparatory in preschool? Absolutely. That doesn't mean training four-year-olds for the
SAT; it means engaging them in activities preschool children love with their academic
growth in mind. We know that children who begin grade school with a variety of language and literacy exposure are more likely to become successful readers; therefore, regular, lively
literary experiences are a cornerstone of the Early Childhood Program. Preschool Assessments with
the Brigance Developmental Inventory and the Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening
(PALS) allow teachers to plan rich literary instruction that meets the needs of each child.
A College-Prep Mindset
Children ages three through five are learning that they can do big things. They long to work, be trusted with responsibility and be challenged. Yet they still need to explore, wiggle, play, and connect deeply with the people around them. While each passes through specific stages of development, they all do so at different times and with different outcomes. Our Fully Licensed, Certified Teachers are trained to help each child excel with the unique talents and abilities God has given them. Instruction is woven in with developmentally-appropriate play to
prepare them academically for the rigor of later years. We consistently find that children who begin in our Early Childhood Program are best-prepared
academically and socially for Kindergarten.
Our Early Childhood Philosophy
Accredited by the Best
Early Childhood students are exposed to many of the resource and community activities offered to
elementary children, including music, Spanish, library, chapel, field trips, and community service.
Distinctly Christian
Norfolk Christian is proud to be a Fully Accredited member of the Virginia Association of Independent Schools (VAIS), and one of only two dozen "Member of
Council" Schools with the national, faith-based Council on Educational Standards and Accountability (CESA). Both organizations have rigorous membership and
accreditation requirements. During the 2018 VAIS review, our Early Childhood and Expeditionary Learning programs were noted as two of the school's highest commendations. In addition, Norfolk Christian's Preschool program is a State Licensed Childcare Provider, subject to all regulations required for licensure.
Why Norfolk Christian? What makes preschool different at an accredited Christian school? We would say
it's just about everything. The integration of age-appropriate academic challenge, a broad variety of experiences, our innovative Expeditionary Learning program, and a solid Biblical worldview all work together to create an environment that is distinctly
Norfolk Christian. Families find the transition from preschool to Kindergarten seamless when students have been anchored with our focus on early writing, language and math skills. What parents often appreciate most are the mentor relationships built with older students, the feeling of belonging their children
experience with teachers and friends, and the vibrant community life that comes with being an Ambassador family. Schedule a visit and let us show you what makes
Norfolk Christian's Early Childhood Program an exceptional beginning.
A Biblical foundation is at the core of a Norfolk Christian education, as we seek to mold excellent
students who will go into the world and be Ambassadors for Christ. Every area of learning is
approached with a Christ-centered focus from the first day with us to the last.
