It’s my pleasure to host the 2014 Rocky Mountain Health & Safety Conference, a chance for safety-minded leaders and professionals to come together and discuss how we can make a difference in our employees’ and their families’ lives by keeping them safer.

Recently, I was reintroduced to a quote I heard earlier in my career. The comment attributed to Peter Drucker, “Culture eats strategy for breakfast”, pinpoints what much of our work as safety professionals is about.

Employees don’t plan on getting injured at work. We know when we review incidents after the fact, it’s not generally lack of knowledge about processes or lack of access to proper equipment, but complacency, distraction, and other culture-related drivers that lead to an accident. As safety professionals, we know that to truly drive a safer work environment, we need to continue with the basic blocking and tackling of providing information, and equipment; and also work on more culturally-focused areas of hiring the right individuals in the first place, creating processes, policies, and metrics that drive the right behavior to create a deep-rooted culture of safety and accountability.

The 2014 Rocky Mountain Health & Safety Conference represents a unique opportunity for safety professionals to converge and learn the latest thinking and approaches for stacking the odds in our favor when it comes to safety. World-class presenters will engage the audience in topics such as: developing a strong safety culture, recognizing and preventing workplace violence and 24/7 safety approaches.

The Colorado Safety Association staff and Board of Directors look forward to seeing you in May.

Sincerely,

Liz CoutureExecutive Director

Post Offer Screening: How, When and Why

Max HaynesErgoMed

After a stringent search, countless interviews, input from co-workers and the compensation team, you’ve finally found a great match for your open position. While you’re confident you’ve found an individual with the right skills for the job, your work has just begun to ensure your prospective employee remains a healthy and productive contributor for years to come.

It is difficult to predict who is going to get hurt at work. Studies demonstrate that there is a link between following a vigorous post-offer screening process and work-related injuries and illnesses. This helps identify relevant physical limitations so that organizations can

MONDAY, MAY 19provide appropriate accommodations. Post-offer drug-screening processes also discourage individuals with drug and alcohol issues from applying, further improving the candidate pool.

In this session, you will learn how to select, manage and implement a post-offer screening process, including physicals, education programs and comprehensive wellness programs to help your organization attract, retain and support the best employees to gain ongoing health and safety.

Workplace Violence Prevention Best Practices

John Nicoletti, Ph.D. Nicoletti-Flater Associates

Colorado, long revered for its majestic Rocky Mountains, is increasingly being known for something undesirable – avenger-related violent incidents. All Coloradoans and the rest of the nation have been touched by violence-induced tragedy. Whether we know a victim, their loved ones or even as horrified media viewers, we seemingly watch helplessly wondering if or when it may happen to us or to someone we care about.

Dr. John Nicoletti is a nationally-recognized counseling psychologist specializing in police psychology, violence risk assessment, workplace and school violence prevention,

as well as crisis intervention and trauma recovery. With his expertise, Dr. Nicoletti asserts warning signs generally appear prior to a violent incidence. This is critical because with telltale signals along the way, we may be able to prevent some events from occurring before it is too late.

In his address, Dr. Nicoletti will describe how to recognize the signals indicating a potential for violence escalation and how to react during each critical phase. He also includes tactics you need to have during an attack to improve your chances for de-escalation and survival.
