3 Reynolds High School Journalism Institute University of Missouri July 19-25, 2015 WORKSHOP OUTLINE Workshop purpose: By the end of this workshop participants will be able to: • Identify and apply the lessons from Student Journalism & Media Literacy (Fromm, Hall, & Manfull, 2015, Rosen Publishing, New York). • Recommend policies and procedures to address major management and education issues in the publication of scholastic publications. • Employ the communication tools commonly used by youth and young adults in a journalism context. • Develop lesson plans for using those tools and the elements of journalism. Workshop method: In addition to online material delivered before and after the workshop, participants will learn from a variety of activities including lectures, field trips and laboratory projects. They will demonstrate their ability to use that information by producing multimedia stories developed from the workshop experiences. Additionally, participants will use social media tools to aid reporting. Workshop project: Team projects: Participants will be divided into seven five-person teams. Each team will produce content for the multimedia products of the workshop, including the multimedia website and social media tools. Teams will cover events during the workshop, including lectures and field trips. Teams will alternate among these stories. For example, Team One might produce stories from the first session of the workshop; Team Two, the second session; Team Three, the third session, etc. Individual assignments: Participants will be expected to participate actively in the discussion of workshop topics in group discussions, perhaps using various social media tools to comment about the sessions. Also, in groups of two or three, participants will write their own lesson/unit plans. Lesson Plan: In small groups, participants will propose a lesson plan, perhaps selected from the skill areas participants identified in the pre-workshop survey as important and requiring the participants to build their skills. Lesson plans will be developed in collaboration with other institute participants to collectively develop an over-arching journalism curriculum that can be immediately useful in the classroom. This curriculum will be published on the asnemissourian.com website. Individual lesson plans may also be submitted to ASNE’s schooljournalism.org to be included in their collection of curriculum resources. WORKSHOP OUTLINE
