Why? The International Research Experiences for Students program is a venture funded by the National Science Foundation (http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=12831 ) to allow US citizens and permanent residents to take part in research abroad during their undergraduate or pre- thesis graduate studies. The experience is of great benefit to the students, enabling them to attain new hardware and software skills and to develop an international contact network for their future career. It is also an opportunity to experience international culture and enjoy learning about life in the wine-growing region of Germany. Where? The IRES students will travel to Mainz, Germany to work within the A2 collaboration, a group of 100 international physicists, working in the tagged photon hall of the MAMI accelerator. (For more information: http://www.kph.uni-mainz.de/eng/index.php, http://www.mainz.de/). When? IRES participants will be required to spend eight weeks in Germany between 23 rd May and 23 rd July 2016. Before traveling to Germany, participants will spend three full days participating in preparatory sessions in Washington DC, from 16 th – 18 th May. Who? If you are interested in learning about international research and developing new skills, this is an opportunity you shouldn't miss. Applicants have to be over the age of eighteen on May 1 st 2016, and be US citizens or permanent residents. Professors Downie, Briscoe & Teodorescu are faculty at GW & Montgomery College. Prof. Downie was the “technical coordinator” of the A2 experiment for three years, before starting at GW as an Assistant Professor in January 2012. Prof. Briscoe has taken students abroad for Summer research projects for more than three decades. Prof. Teodorescu, a specialist in Physics Education Research, will help to monitor your progress throughout your IRES scholarship. Together they will ensure that IRES participants enjoy themselves and gain valuable skills from their IRES experience! How do I apply? To apply, simply fill out the attached form and email it, alongside a scanned university transcript to Professor Downie at [email protected]. The application form requires some basic information and a personal statement about why we should select you for the program, and what you feel you can bring to, and gain from it. You should also supply the names of two people who should supply a reference to Prof. Downie via email. Applications and references should be received by 8 th February 2016. Review of the applications will commence as soon as they are received, and applicants will receive notice of selection via email. How much will it cost? The program will cost the participants nothing, and all charges will be met up-front by the organizers. Return flights will be booked on your behalf to Germany and, once there, the program will supply accommodation, at no cost to the participants, within reasonable distance from the university. Participants will receive a $500 / week stipend during their time in Germany and a moderate allowance for meals and incidentals.
