Lyndy Clowry Principal - Sarah Redfern High School

Hello Everyone,

I would like to extend a very warm welcome to all our 2020 families, many of who are new to our school this term.

Many of us experienced a very tumultuous holiday as we experienced the trauma that our country experienced with the bushfires and the very challenging weather conditions of summer. Some of us would have had more firsthand experience of these events than others. I reminded all students as they returned to school that whether the impact upon us is first hand or not, they can certainly access support at school if required. We have Counsellors and Wellbeing staff that can assist and support your child and also link you to services beyond the school if required.

It has been a joy to see our Year 7 cohort who have made a positive start to their time at high school. They are energetically engaged in their learning and it is wonderful to see them adjust, make new friends and master their way around their new school. Our celebrated middle school’s main focus is to ensure this transition time is smooth for every student to set them up for success as they progress through high school.

I would also like to congratulate our returning students. We continue to focus on the needs of every student at Sarah Redfern High School so that each student is able to experience success. As such it is a major focus of all staff at Sarah Redfern High School to maintain high expectations of every student, of each staff member and of our wider community. It is this focus that allows for each child to extend themselves, engage authentic and challenging learning and apply this learning in new and exciting ways.

When walking through the school it exciting to hear the voices of students as they marvel at new ideas, new information and new skills. This year we are also very excited at the introduction of an explicit Aboriginal Curriculum that teaches every student in Stage 4 Aboriginal culture that is directly connected to Dhurawal country and language. There has been a wonderful spirit of collaboration between our school, the NSW Aboriginal Education Consultative Group and local elders in developing rich learning opportunities for all students. I would like to thank our partners in this project, their contribution has and will continue to make a very significant impact on the learning of all students at Sarah Redfern High School.

As we approach autumn and changing weather I would like to remind you that we have a commitment for every student to be attending school every day, on time and in full school uniform. The uniform can be purchased at Lowes at Minto Marketplace. If any family is having difficulty purchasing the school uniform please contact the school for confidential advice and support.

I am excited about the coming year and the continued opportunities it brings for all our students and staff at Sarah Redfern High School where we of course remain committed to our school values with every student focusing on being a ‘Respectful, responsible learner’.

I would like to take this opportunity to express my condolences and those of the entire Sarah Redfern Community to the family of Omar Elomar who passed away on the 15 February. Omar completed his HSC in 2019 and was a much loved member of that year group. He was a cheeky, charismatic young man who was held in high regard by his teachers and fellow students. There was a deep sadness felt by our school and all who knew him.

Over the last year the school has experienced major infrastructure works to the site with the installation of lifts, a disabled bathroom, ramps and wheel chair accessibility to classrooms and buildings throughout the school. The school welcomed the upgrades and carried out additional work with the outside of the gym being painted and finished off with a new sign and potted plants to add to the visual appeal of the area. I’m sure that you will agree that the completed work looks amazing.

The school has carried out landscaping work to provide our students with a beautiful green area encompassing paved seating areas, gardens and grass. The work has been a hit with students and staff who are utilising the

area during break times and outdoor learning classroom spaces. In 2020, we will be looking at continuing with more school landscaping projects to continue the beautification of the school.

Establishment of theAutism class – 2020 The foundation of the Autism class this year has allowed the Support Unit to re-evaluate and adjust the ways in which we deliver the curriculum. Through evidence based research we have designed a flexible learning space that is adaptive to the developing needs of students with ASD. Using a multitude of learning and behavioural strategies including emotional regulation, student directed learning and systematic instruction, our Year 7 cohort are settling in comfortably and demonstrating their successes in join-ing the Sarah Redfern High School community.

Sarah Redfern High School - Gen STEM Project In 2019, Sarah Redfern High School became part of the State Government initiative in collaboration with CSIRO and Campbelltown Council in a two-year agreement to deliver Generation STEM Project through the Local Industry and Community Partnerships program. The work of SRHS’s brightest young science, technology, engineering and mathematical minds was showcased at Campbelltown Art Centre to local industry, Council leaders and the community last December. The Local industry groups provided a range of issues and problems (in Population Growth, Transport, Energy, Ageing, Water Supply, Biodiversity, Technology, Health and Heat Stress) where students needed to come up with solutions. Being able to present issues and asking students to come up with solutions is a great way to bring inquiry-based learning and project-based learning into the classroom. Students had the opportunity to develop their skills in collaboration, problem solving, inquiry, data-driven decision-making, creativity and communication.

Pathways to Success

As many of us are aware, the pathway to lifelong learning success can be tumultuous, so it is imperative that a

schools approach to success ensures that transition pathways are varied and designed to cater to individual

learning needs. At Sarah Redfern High School, we are dedicated to working closely with students and their

families to achieve the best outcomes for these students at school and in life.

We extend our high expectations to those students who strive towards tertiary study, and our close partner-

ships with providers such as Western Sydney University and the University of Wollongong mean that Sarah

Redfern High School students are given every opportunity to experience tertiary education from Year 8 on-

wards. We invite the Universities Admission Centre (UAC) to present information sessions annually to inform

students and their families on preference choices, scholarships and early entry schemes.

Additionally, we pride ourselves on our focus on further development and nourishing of skills that go beyond

academia, and recognise the importance and validity of success outside of the scope of the traditional class-

room learning environment. Continued and caring interventions between students, families, Year Advisers,

Deputy Principals and the Careers Adviser means that every student is given respectful consultation to set re-

alistic and achievable goals to strive towards.

Success is celebrated for students who show continued diligence to achieve their goals, whether these are

scholastic or employment based. The Graduation Ceremony and Formal invitations are extended to both stu-

dents who complete their Higher School Certificate at school and those that continue alternative education, or

gain and maintain continued gainful employment.

2020 is shaping up to be a fabulous year for success stories for all of our students, and we are excited to see

where the future takes us in Sarah Redfern High

Year 10 Equivalency

Sarah Redfern High School recognises that for some, the traditional

High School classroom setting is not fit for purpose and some students

may thrive in other environments. Our working relationship with the

local TAFE has achieved excellent results for select students taking on

alternative pathways to success. The Certificate II in Skills for Work

and Vocational Pathways enables students to gain the skills and

knowledge required to enter a Certificate III trades course, while ful-

filling their educational requirements as dictated by NSW Legislation.

Work Studies

During Years 11 and 12, Sarah Redfern High School offers two distinct

subject streams: Academic and Transition.

Our Academic students are those students who are seeking to continue study after high school and aim to earn

an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) in combination with their Higher School Certificate (HSC).

Transition students have access to a range of subjects but these will not necessarily be eligible for an ATAR and

they must undertake Mathematics Standard 1 and Work Studies.

Work Studies is a course that specifically caters to those students who are looking to build on skills that are di-

rectly related to finding work and applying skills in the world beyond school including financial literacy and work-

place communication. Our HSC 2020 cohort recently used their newfound enterprise and management skills to

run fun peer workshops with our new Year 7’s – establishing supportive peer relationships for students new to

the high school environment. Look out for Year 12 assisting at the Sausage Sizzle at our Open Night!

School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SBAT)

Sarah Redfern High School works closely with local employment

partners and the Schools Services Directorate to enable students to

undertake a School Based Apprenticeship or Traineeship (SBAT).

These opportunities, signed on for during Subject Selection during

Year 10, mean that students sign on for paid work in combination

with additional TAFE study, culminating in either a completed AQF

Certificate and two years of experience, or the completion of the first

year of an apprenticeship. Currently we have students completing

SBAT’s in areas such as Hospitality, Retail Management and

Construction Pathways.

TVET

Sarah Redfern High School is lucky to be able to offer several Vocational Education courses on site with our highly

skilled and experience VET teachers. For students who are looking beyond what we offer in a classroom on site,

opportunities are available to enrol in TAFE and undertake partial or full qualifications with TAFE NSW as part of

their Stage 6 coursework. Currently we have students enrolled in courses as diverse as Animal Studies,

Horticulture, Hair and Beauty and Community Services, at campuses close to home or online through TAFE Digital.

Alternative Senior Student Success

We are thrilled to celebrate the success of students who push

themselves beyond the scope of traditional school and transition into

alternative pathways. These students have carefully considered their

future learning and employment needs in consultation with their

families and the school and we look forward to welcoming them back

for Graduation and the fun of the Year 12 Formal.

Below we have just a couple of examples of what can happen when

you put your mind and heart into achieving your goals. We are so

proud of each and every one of our students and cannot wait to

celebrate their successes with them at Graduation.

Cheyenne knew that she wanted to work with cars. She signed on for a

pre-apprenticeship course which gave her the chance to take on some

vocational education in an adult learning environment. During her Work

Studies classes she pushed herself to make phone calls and ask for work exploration opportunities. She is now

nearly finished the first year of her spray-painting apprenticeship, and loving being a role model for young

women in a male-dominated industry.

A mby and Ben knew that work was where they wanted to be to kick-start their careers and help out

their families. Using the skills they developed in Work Studies and confidence built during

workshops run in conjunction with local community groups, they sought out and found ongoing

employment. Ben came back and gave an inspirational talk to his classmates on the way life is

once you take the steps to become independent of the school environment.

Page 16

Z oe was keen to step out into the

world and tried a couple of roles

in retail before settling on her new

traineeship in Children’s Services.

Now she is loving taking care of pre-school

aged children and working while she earns

her Certificate III. The world is her oyster,

with many pathways available after the

completion of her traineeship.

Felicity knew in her heart that she was ready to

start getting ready for her career in aged

services. She could see how her empathetic and

compassionate nature made her a perfect

candidate for a future in aged care – together we

enrolled her in a Community Services course at

TAFE NSW, where she is thriving in a learning

environment engaging her in her future.

Jayden successfully transitioned his part time job into a full time traineeship through his dedication to his work –

cementing his management career pathway with a multi-national corporation. The opportunities are endless…

See you all for

Graduation and

September guys!

We are equally proud of our students that work towards

achieving their academic goals and securing pathways into the

university courses of their dreams.

We are very proud of the hard

work and commitment modelled

by one of our school captains,

Sweta, who is a deserving recipi-

ent of the Academy Access

Scholarship with Western Syd-

ney University – securing her po-

sition as a high achiever before

she has even commenced ter-

tiary education.

Our student relationships with Western Sydney

University start during Year 9, when 20

high-achieving students are carefully selected to

take part in the Fast Forward program, which

opens doors for many students to consider

university education.

Additionally, all students from Year 8 begin a working relationship with the University of Wollongong as current

university students come and visit us on site to challenge young students to begin thinking about their ‘Future Me’.

Even students seeking academic pathways are encouraged to undertake work exploration to ensure that their

chosen career path is right for them. Bianca had long held a passion for animals, and in order to supplement her

application for the very competitive Veterinary Science course that she eventually received an offer for, she found

a veterinary placement close to home.
