PROFESSIONAL
MEDICAL CODING AND BILLING PROGRAM
WHY MEDICAL CODING AND BILLING?
Medical coding and billing plays a critical role in the large and expanding
healthcare industry. These
professionals translate medical records into standardized codes used to bill patients and third-party
payers such as insurance companies and Medicare. Coders use 3 different code sets: CPT, HCPCS,
and ICD-9/10.
All healthcare organizations will be transitioning to the ICD-10 code set. However, to
earn industry certifications and start your career before the transition, you will need to
be familiar with the ICD-9 code set. This is why Career Step’s program is focused on
teaching you the ICD-9 code set.
With employment opportunities in healthcare facilities nationwide,
there is already a shortage of medical coding professionals of
about 30% and the U.S. Department of Labor estimates that
employment needs will grow by 22% (or 41,100 new jobs) by 2022.
This career offers an established career path for advancement,
especially in large hospital networks, and even the opportunity to
work from home once you gain a few years of experience. The
U.S. Department of Labor reports that, on average, medical coding
and billing professionals earn nearly $36,000 a year, which can be
increased by earning various industry certifications.
