Welcome to the Durham District School Board!

Congratulations on starting a new and rewarding profession in education. The New Teacher Induction Program (NTIP) is a program that is mandated by the Ministry of Education and supported by the Durham District School Board. NTIP supports the growth and professional development of new teachers and is a step in a continuum of professional learning for teachers to develop effective teaching, learning, and assessment practices. By helping new teachers achieve their full potential, NTIP supports Ontario's vision of achieving high levels of student performance. The Durham District School Board (DDSB) is responsible for public education in the rural settings of Uxbridge, Brock and Scugog Townships and the urban settings of Ajax, Whitby, Pickering and Oshawa. The Board employs 7,000 teaching and educational services staff. With 129 elementary and secondary schools and learning centres, the Board accommodates more than 66,000 regular day students and thousands more who take advantage of a wide variety of continuing education and adult credit courses. The DDSB maintains a constant and strong focus on student achievement and student and staff well-being. To that end, programs are in place to meet an array of needs. Our priorities, and how we’re going to get there, are clearly delineated through a regularly updated document entitled Durham Directions:

Durham District School Board—Board Improvement Plan for 2014-2015

The Durham District School Board’s 2014-2015 Board Improvement Plan for student

achievement provides a system view and direction to teaching and learning from Kindergarten

to secondary school graduation. Efforts to improve student achievement are supported

through a common vision, shared goals and coherence between Board and school priorities.

Student achievement goals and targets are strategically based on a review of various data

sources including Provincial EQAO results. An extensive review of achievement and contextual

data was conducted to ensure goals and targets are relevant. At the end of the review process

a number of recommendations related to programs for students were acted upon.

Who does NTIP Support?

Permanent Teachers in their first or second year of teaching

Long Term Occasional (LTO) Teachers in their first or second assignment of 97 consecutive days or more

What are the Components of NTIP?

The New Teacher Induction Program (NTIP) is comprised of the following induction elements:

a) Orientation for all new teachers to the school and school board;

b) Professional development and training for new teachers;

c) Mentoring of new teachers by experienced teachers.

In addition, all new teachers are required to have two performance appraisals conducted by

principals in the first twelve months after they begin teaching. New teachers will complete the

NTIP requirements when they receive two Satisfactory ratings in their performance appraisals.

For teachers who do not obtain two Satisfactory appraisal ratings within the first year, the NTIP

program continues into a second year, to provide additional supports to the teacher. More

Release Time for NTIP Teachers and their Mentors

A key component of the New Teacher Induction Program (NTIP) requirements is for all new teachers to be mentored by experienced teachers. Administrators are responsible for assigning a mentor to all NTIP teachers in their schools. During the 2014/2015 school year, the new teacher and his/her mentor will each be provided with 2 full days of mentoring release time in additional to professional development to support the NTIP teacher's growth. School administrators are asked to book the supply teachers through SmartFind Express and charge the school. Afterwards, they should send Doris Mizzi an email with the information below for reimbursement of the school from the NTIP account:

New teachers are required to complete this short instructional training session in the first month of their teaching assignment.

The definition of literacy has been expanded to meet the demands of the 21st century. What competencies will our students need to face the future? In this full-day session, we will examine the skills and strategies required as students move from kindergarten through the school system and into adulthood. When children grow up experiencing adverse circumstances, it can shape their entire lives. This book club will explore the seven factors that are crucial to engaging all students, particularly those who have grown up in situations of lower socio-economic status. The author, Eric Jensen, uses his own experiences and perspectives to explain how to create a high-energy, engaging and positive classroom climate that fosters success every day.

During this interactive Book Club, NTIP teachers will explore high-leverage strategies that make the biggest impact to student learning and achievement. Through Jim Knight’s book ‘High Impact Instruction’ and a classroom implementation model, the sessions will focus on three areas of high-impact instruction: 1. Content planning, including using guiding questions, learning maps, and formative assessment; 2. Instructional practices such as the use of thinking prompts, effective questions, challenging assignments, and experiential learning; 3. Community building, in which a classroom culture is shaped that promotes well-being, creativity, learning, and high expectations.

Building Effective Classrooms (2 Parts)

Learning to build an effective classroom is an important skill for all teachers, particularly new teachers. In the first of two interactive workshops, participants will be provided with strategies to create a structured, engaging and inclusive classroom environment in order to minimize behaviours and maximize student learning. Also, participants will set specific goals by completing goal setting student profiles. The second part of the workshop will focus on debriefing these profiles, sharing best practices and formulating next steps. This workshop will be offered in both the fall and winter sessions.

Cooperative Structures (2 Parts)

In part one of this interactive workshop series, participants will be introduced to a number of research-based cooperative structures in order to increase student engagement and improve student achievement. Teachers will be given an opportunity to try out these structures in their classrooms and to record their observations and reflections. When the group reconvenes for part two, teachers will share their experiences and ideas and formulate next steps to continue the implementation process of cooperative structures into their professional practice.

Deepening your Understanding of Special Education (2 Parts)

This two part workshop provides an overview of Special Education and practices that best support Special Education learners. Topics covered will include understanding exceptionalities and decoding identifications, the IEP process, legal issues, and classroom supports. Participants will be involved in a practical component where classroom structures provided in conjunction with the Autism Resource Team are examined and implemented in the classroom.

Descriptive Feedback

Ongoing descriptive feedback linked specifically to the learning goals and success criteria is a powerful tool for improving student learning and is fundamental to building a culture of learning within the classroom. In this interactive session, participants will explore how the practice of descriptive feedback is an essential piece of the assessment for and as learning continuum. In additional to understanding the fundamentals of descriptive feedback, practical strategies and applications to the classroom will be examined.

Desire2Learn Management System & eLearn

Blended learning allows teachers to engage students by creating an online extension of the classroom. This half-day workshop, which is being offered in both morning and afternoon sessions, will provide an opportunity for Grade 1-12 teachers to enhance their face-to-face classroom with the addition of a Virtual Learning Environment. Attendees will use the Desire2Learn (D2L) Learning Management System (LMS) to access Ministry-created curriculum-correlated courses. D2L is a Blended Learning platform that provides access to e-Learning Ontario courses. These courses come pre-loaded with all of the content that teachers need for the grades and courses they teach. It is completely customizable and meets all of the curriculum expectations for a given course or grade.

Engaging your Parent Community

Engaging parents in school life offers many benefits and rewards to families and the school community. From curriculum nights and formal three-way conferences to school fun fairs, sporting events and informal schoolyard conversations, teachers have many opportunities to interact with parents and gain a better understanding of their students’ lives. This session will explore the many ways in which teachers can encourage school-family connections as well as support and foster the engagement of families in the education process.

Improving Student Communication in the Classroom

Oral communication is a cornerstone on which we build our literacy and learning throughout life. The more we engage students in productive conversations and provide them with opportunities to share and clarify their ideas and understandings, the more skillful they will become at communicating. This session will focus on how classroom conversations can be used across various grades and subject areas to improve student learning. Attendees will participate in a number of subject-specific activities in the areas of language, social studies, history and science in grades three through twelve that they will be able to take away and implement in their classrooms.

Individual Goal Setting

In order for students to become independent learners, they must learn to develop self-assessment skills and to identify the actions they need to take to define and meet their own long and short term goals. In this workshop, participants will learn how to model the setting of attainable, specific individual learning goals for students, and how to support and provide feedback to students as they move from guided practice to independent practice, and gradually increase their responsibility for their own learning.

Inquiry-Based Learning (2 Parts)

Student-led inquiry prepares today’s learners for a rapidly changing future by developing their skills to think, learn and create, and to be able to locate, evaluate and use information effectively (Kuhlthau, et al, 2012). This interactive workshop will provide an overview of what student-led inquiry looks like and will offer techniques to help students develop their own voice, focus on a big idea and create critical questions. The workshop will work through the four phases of inquiry: Exploring, Investigating, Processing and Creating. Participants are encouraged to bring a personal mobile device or ILP laptop as the exploration and investigation of online resources will be a component of the workshop. Additional laptops will be available.

Mentors: Foundations of Mentoring

Mentoring provides a wide range of benefits, not only to new teachers, but also to the more experienced teachers who mentor them. Being a mentor can provide teachers with a unique opportunity to consolidate their teaching practice and enhance their teaching and learning skills. In this interactive full-day session, experienced teachers who will be acting as mentors to NTIP teachers will have the opportunity to look at best practices in mentorship such as effective communication and collaborative conversation skills. This workshop will be offered in both the fall and winter sessions.

New to FSL

This in-service, which is offered as either an AM or a PM workshop, is for teachers who are new to FSL and is designed to help the school year run as smoothly and successfully as possible. A wide variety of online and print resources will be presented and discussed. Teachers will also be looking at the impact of Ontario’s revised 2013 FSL curriculum and the support that is available to them from the French Facilitator, the French Coach and the network of mentors that has been developed across the board. Reporting and Communicating with Parents/Guardians

This workshop is designed to help new teachers prepare for parent/teacher interviews and provides strategies for monitoring student progress and reporting. The main topics of this workshop will include: interview preparation and guidelines, effective communication strategies, record keeping, an overview of using Power Teacher to complete the provincial report card, as well as some tips to ease the stress of the reporting process. Participants will also work through some possible interview scenarios and have an opportunity to engage in professional dialogue with colleagues.

Self and Peer-Assessment (2 Parts)

Self and peer-assessment are key practices for developing increased responsibility in students for their own learning. Both students and teachers can use peer and self-assessment information to monitor progress towards learning goals and to adjust the focus of instruction and learning. This interactive workshop will provide participants with practical strategies that can be implemented in their classrooms in order to support the development of these skills in their students.

Supporting Positive Mental Health

This half-day session will provide resources and information to support school staff in identifying students who may have mental health problems and increasing awareness of available support services for students.
