Manufacturing Education at MIT• 1950’s

– Metals Processing Research (MechE and Metallurgy)• 1960’s The Rise of Engineering Science;

– Pressure to Eliminate Manufacturing – too applied• Late 1970’s Resurgence

– Process Research and Industry Consortia– Founding of LMP

• Eventually ~ 100 Graduate Students at SM and PhD Level

• Mid 1980’s LMP Faculty Create– Comprehensive Graduate Classes in Manufacturing; but

no specific degree

Manufacturing Education at MIT• Late 1980’s Response to Competitiveness Crisis:

– Combine Business(MBA) and Research Degree (SM) – Leaders for Manufacturing Program

• Industry Funded and Led

• 2000 Educational Initiative with Singapore– Joint Interest in Professional Degrees– Joint Development of MEng at NTU

• Alumni base ~200

• 2005 Launch of MEng in Manufacturing– First Named Degree in Manufacturing– First MEng Degree in MechE.– Initial Fellowships from Singapore– Alumni base ~120 worldwide.
