Professional Development

Registration & Payment Policy: Registration is required to attend class. Payment is due at the time of registration. Payment can be made by mail, phone, and fax, online or in person.

Full or Cancelled Classes Policy: The Community Education Department reserves the right to limit enrollment or cancel a class due to insufficient enrollment. For this reason, please register at least one week before class begins to guarantee your class is not cancelled. Every effort will be made to notify students that a class has been filled or cancelled. Students will receive full refunds for full or cancelled classes.

Bad Weather Cancellation Policy: If SVCC cancels classes due to bad weather, Community Education classes will also be cancelled. Cancellations will be announced on area radio, TV stations and on our website, svcc.edu.

Refund & Withdrawal Policy: Withdrawal Policy: Withdrawals must be completed by phone, call 815.835.6212, or in person at the Community Education Department Office, 1F11. Documentation is required for the student withdrawal to be processed. Please leave a message if no one is available to take your call.

Refund Policy: If classes are cancelled due to low enrollment, students will receive a full refund. No refunds will be given to students who do not withdrawal three business days before the first day of class. Business days are Monday through Friday, during office hours, and excludes observed Holidays.

Payment Plan Options:Students may enroll into a payment plan for classes that cost over $500. Students can go to svcc.edu and search payment options for more information

If/then statements allow you to test your data: we will explore traditional if/then statements as well as the nesting of if/then in formulas. EMT

EMT Basic TrainingThis Emergency Medical Technician Basic course is designed to train police, fire, rescue personnel and persons interested in the techniques of prehospital emergency care. Students will gain the knowledge and skills to provide basic emergency medical assistance to people in need.The curriculum, developed by the U.S. Department of Transportation, prepares students for the National & State certification examinations.

An EMT is trained to respond to emergency situations and provide efficient and immediate care to the ill and injured. They transport patients to an appropriate medical facility. The EMT possesses the basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate interventions at the scene and during transport. EMTs function as part of comprehensive EMS response, under medical oversight, and function with basic interventions and equipment. This extensive course combines reading, lecture, computer-based and on-line learning, significant study time, and practical labs. Skills taught include all areas of patient assessment (medical, cardiac, pediatric, and trauma), airway management, splinting, and appropriate interventions. This demanding course requires significant reading, computer skills, and participatory effort by the EMT candidate. Course is 184-plus hours of classroom training, clinical experience, and field experience. After successful completion, the candidate qualifies to challenge the national exam and certification in Illinois.

Qualifications: Aptitudes required for EMT work are good physical stamina, endurance, and body conditions to handle significant lifting, stooping and walking. Student must balance items and patients in excess of a minimum of 125 pounds. To be certified as an EMT, candidates must be at least 18 years old and possess a high school diploma or equivalent (GED), at the time of class completion.

Students will complete 16 hours of clinical with at least 10 hours of patient contact hours outside of the schedule class time.

Firefighter Training

Basic Operations Firefighter TrainingThe hands-on Basic Operations Firefighter Training Program will provide students with the requirements to become a career or volunteer firefighter. The training program will exceed 200 hours. Students will be physically and mentally tested every class. Rigorous, high quality instruction by veteran firefighters will prepare you to sit for the Office of the State Fire Marshall Basic Operations Firefighter Exam. Fire Service Vehicle Operator and CPR will be provided. NIMS 100, 700, and Courage to be Safe will be completed online. Students will need to purchase the book “Fundamentals of Firefighter Skills – Third Edition”. Orientation and classes will be held at Amboy Fire Department at 25 N E Avenue in Amboy. Food Service SanitationFood Service Sanitation Develop the knowledge and responsibility for food sanitation operations. Qualify for your food sanitation manager’s license from the State of Illinois Department of Public Health upon satisfactory completion of a license examination. 10 Hour Construction Course for the Non-Construction WorkerThe class is designed for maintenance employees, supervisors and safety professionals who may oversee contractors or construction projects in the facility. Participants will learn the provisions of the construction regulations and learn the basics. Topics include; the multiemployer citation process, how to conduct worksite inspections, working and walking surfaces common ladders and scaffolds hazards, hazardous materials found, fall protection, electrical safety, material handling and more. 30 Hour General Industry (OSHA)Many standards promulgated by the Occupational Safety and health Administration *OSHA) explicitly require the employer to train employees in the safety and health aspects of their jobs. This program will include in-depth training on: Introduction to OSHA Working and Walking Surfaces, Exit Routes and Emergency Action Plans Electrical, 70 E Arc Flash lockout/Tagout, Personal Protective Equipment, Material Handling, Hazard Communication, machine Guarding, Permit required Confined Space, Powered Industrial Vehicles (forklifts), Fall Protection Recordkeeping, and other selected OSHA topics to meet the site specific needs. Forklift Operation Safety Train-the-TrainerIn this classroom train the trainer session, participants will leave with the information and materials to develop an in-house training program. Topics will cover the classroom, performance and evaluation requirements of the Powered Industrial Truck Standard. Not: Hands on driving is not included in this class. Department of Transportation Required Hazardous Material TrainingThe Department of Transportation requires training for employees receiving or shipping hazardous materials. This training includes 49 CFR hazardous materials table, packaging of materials, shipping papers and other documentation, and recognizing potential hazardous conditions when receiving packages. Participants are encouraged to bring a list of products they ship or receive and samples of shipping papers. DOT Homeland security training is included in the course. Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA)The RCRA sets regulations for generators and handlers of waste generated in the United States. Based on by RCRA Subtitle C, EPA developed regulations for the cradle-to-grave management of hazardous waste. Person who produce hazardous waste are called hazardous waste generators and they must receive RCRA training. In compliance with U.S. EPA regulations 40 CFR 265.16 Personnel training; Facility personnel must successfully complete the program required in paragraph (a) of this section within six months after the effective date of these regulations or six months after the date of their employment or assignment to a facility, or to a new position at a facility, whichever is later. Employees hired after the effective date of these regulations must not work in unsupervised positions until they have completed the training requirements in additions an annual review of the initial training required. CDL

TRUCK DRIVER TRAINING – 160 Driving Academy at Sauk Valley Community College

Train to earn your Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and prepare for a career in the trucking industry, one of the fastest growing Industries in the country. With over 300,000 truck-driving jobs available in the United States, this course is designed for students with little or no commercial driving experience.

The Sauk Valley Community College Truck Driver Training Course, provided by the 160 Driving Academy, includes everything you need to earn a CDL and find your first job as a truck driver.

After successful completion of the four-week course you will take the Secretary of State administered Class A test and receive certificates from Sauk Valley Community College, 160 Driving Academy as well as an Illinois Commercial Driver’s License from the Secretary of State. Cost of the program is $4,520 and includes cost of permit, drug screen and DOT physical. Carrier sponsorship, loans, and grant options are available to eligible students to help cover tuition expenses. Dental Assisting Program with Clinical ExternshipThe 60 hour Dental Assisting Program prepares students for entry-level positions in one of the fastest growing health care positions. Students are familiarized with all areas of pre-clinical dental assisting and provided training in the skills required to function as an assistant in the dental practice. This course covers the following key areas and topics – Administrative Aspects include: the history of dentistry and dental assisting, introduction to the dental office, the legal aspects of dentistry, policies, and guidelines. Clinical Aspects include: introduction to oral anatomy, dental operatory, dental equipment, introduction to tooth structure, primary and permanent teeth, the oral cavity and related structures, proper patient positioning, dental hand-pieces, sterilization, and other areas. In addition to entry-level administrative jobs, this course is ideal for students interested in pursuing a future formal Dental Hygienist program. Medical Billing & Coding ProgramThis combined 80 hour billing and coding course offers the skills needed to solve insurance billing problems, how to manually file claims (using the CPT and ICD-10 manual), complete common insurance forms, trace delinquent claims, appeal denied claims, and use generic forms to streamline billing procedures. The course covers the following areas: CPT (Introduction, Guidelines, Evaluation, and Management), specialty fields (such as surgery, radiology and laboratory), ICD-10 (Introduction and Guidelines) and basic claims processes for medical insurance and third party reimbursements. Students will learn how to find the service and codes using manuals, (CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS). Note: After obtaining the practical work experience (6 months to 2 years), students who complete this course could be qualified to sit for the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) – Certified Professional Coder Exam (CPC or CPC-H Apprentice); the American Health Information Association (AHIMA) Certified Coding Associate (CCA) exam; and/or other National Exams. Pharmacy Technician Program with Clinical ExternshipThis comprehensive 50 hour program prepares students to work as a pharmacy technician in a retail or other pharmacy setting and take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board’s PTCB exam. Course content includes: pharmacy medical terminology, the history of pharmacy, the pharmacy practice in multiple environments, pharmacy calculations and measurements, reading and interpreting prescriptions, and defining drugs by generic and brand names. Through classroom lecture and hands on labs, students review dosage calculations, drug classifications, the “top 200 drugs”, I.V. flow rates, sterile compounding, dose conversions, aseptic technique, the handling of sterile products, total parental nutrition (TPN), dispensing of prescriptions, inventory control, and billing and reimbursement.
